A New Day on Arus (mj space race 2011)

Description
Orphaned by evil, the princess learns to take her place among warriors.

-------------

I knew I wanted to give homage to the feminine for my first Space Race composition. So I went back, waaay back, to the first female character I can remember from a science fiction series.

For a kids’ cartoon, Princess Allura of ‘Voltron’ was a pretty complex character. When she wasn’t defending the galaxy, she was ruler of Arus and had matters of state to deal with. That pesky crush on Keith complicated their professional relationship. Then there was Prince Lotor, always trying to kidnap her and force her to marry him. Can’t a girl catch a break?

The song is broken up into four parts:

1 - Daybreak, the morning after her father’s assassination;
2 - The princess in mourning;
3 - Training;
4 - The Blue Lion awakens.

I hope you enjoy it!

mix?
Please let me know if you notice anything weird in the mix. I had an ear infection toward the end of creating this so I couldn’t hear correctly, AND it was my first time using Audacity to boost the volume, AND the song is three mp3’s pieced together so getting them all to jam together just right is tricky. Augh!

Oh, well done!
A story; distinct parts; real music not some namby-pamby synth sweeps like I might do ;-) This is spectacular Erin. Very evocative and nicely varied through the parts. Great entry, thanks.

oh, now!
Thank you, although I was just telling Arctip that I would like to break free of what I normally do and do more of those dreamy synth sweeps! I have a hard time relaxing and letting the sounds develop. My brain is just stuck in measures. So I appreciate your gift; keep it coming!

A new day on Arus
Wow, what a serene and imposing piece you've crafted. I like the concept of 4 different parts telling a story and that still fits so nice within the theme. All of them terrific, but part 2 might be my favourite (impressive playing-skills presented here, and voice too!).

In all, very good melodies and lots of emotion here, parts could be right from a Ghibli movie.

Very well done! I enjoyed both song and mix very much and can't really see a need to break free from anything. You got some serious skill :) Take care of your ears now!

I really appreciate it! I admit I had to look up "Ghibli" - but I know I've seen Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away - amazing films - so it is a compliment of the highest degree! Thanks. :)

Allura-ing piece of work
Beautiful, ambitious, captivating. All the movements are working, and they are well strung together. The mix is a winner if you were to ask me.

Keith? Hahahahaha.

Well, this is great. Love the big finish.

Well...
Once again, you've produced a stunning piece of work. Star Trek-esque start to the first movement, but beautiful use of the softer synth sounds. Second movement, what can I say? Short, but very sweet. Gorgeous! Off now to the third movement. I love the little arpeggiated stabs. And a good variety on the percussion, maybe a touch of reverb here? Finale, well maybe I'd have used a synth sound, rather than whatever it is - horns? A minor nitpick.

All in all, a terrific piece of music.

Btw, I have to agree with Ex; Keith?? :-D

the mourning after...
bittersweet daybreak brings...

mourning, tugging with beautiful tears to the harp-strings...

and leading to strengthening and conviction, and preparing for...

awareness of what is right, and how to achieve it, and the power to do so.

Brava! May I clap for heroines, even if they may be space-cartoons? Grand portrayal of ideas and emotion in "saturday-morning-cartoon"style music. I enjoyed it. Thank you for this apropos entry.

I like
how you drew on a space story to compose your music.... this is great..... so clear and bright and with all the spangles and sweeping whooshes we would expect up there in the Cosmos..... really lovely sounds and then the harp comes in to give another layer.... beautiful..... just love the way you compartmentalised this.....and they all fit in with each other..... wonderful composition..... enjoyed, regards M

Intriguing
The way you've weaved this fabric of space. Very inspirational. (So much that I used a few seconds of it in my own entry, hope that's OK with you - don't hesitate to say otherwise, if that is how you feel - I was too stressed out to ask in advance, that's all).

All the segments in this are very good. The peaceful second part is pure beauty but the heart do take a few extra leaps when the third kicks in. Perfect with that bass drum to set the training scene and the trumpet/trombone(?) when she is entering the world as the Blue Lion. Majestically.

Very well done! Thank you and take care,

Henke

Beautiful...
and so mesmerizing I couldn't help but be drawn into this piece. The harp was as very pretty touch to this story. Al the sections clearly progress this drama into a great story.

You have great knack for composition, which I always enjoy. The mix sounds fine in my ears.

Thanks for sharing.

Wonderfully atmospheric
and at time haunting Erin. I like the subtle touches of dissonance floating about. Of course your beautiful harp is a standout. Stately and assured.
The last two sections also worked very well. I have never heard or seen Princess Allura but this music sure seems to fit well with your description.
Cheers,
Charlie

Arus....I don't think
that was thought through too well....perhaps the artistic director should have his arus kickjed from here to breakfast ! Had to chuckle at the title with that word in it....it's probably just me and my smutty irreverent sense of humour.....but hey the music is great...very commandeering and lofty but atmospheric and punchy too.

" Orphaned by evil, the princess learns to take her place among warriors and leans to kick some arus "....sorry .Lovely piece of music...

Yes, it is a little odd! The artistic director was probably Japanese, though, so who knows, maybe Arus means "most beautiful planet in the galaxy" in Japanese. :)

Very nice
I really like the way this one builds. Like Mua'Dib, I found that there wasn't as much stereo separation between tracks as there could be, and the horn tracks themselves are a bit too dry sounding. MIDI often needs some reverb to sound natural. Really enjoyed this piece. Epic!

I am still quite a newbie, so thanks for your suggestions. Stereo separation...do you mean turning up some tracks in one ear vs. the other?

Musical journey
Behind the cute (that darn prince Lotor!) story and plain lovely space ride through the various synth landscapes you have a theme and instrumentation (especially from 3:32 - around 4:54) that I think is excellent! And I like how you repeat the melody with full orchestration towards the end.
I hope you'll either get Logic (learning curve isn't so bad - import your GB projects and see where the instruments/effects/settings go in Logic - that way you could save hours of reading manuals) or buy the missing JamPack - either way, we're all looking forward to more charming music like this!

Layers
What lonely sounding build. I like this. The music really seems to find its element after the 2:30 mark. I did find the harp/piano sound or the reverb/effects used on it to be a bit of a unusual change from the more vast sounding intro, but as other sounds start to creep in, everything gels again. This is an ambitious arrangement and it works very well. Drums sound great when they start kicking. Nicely done overall.

The Blue Lion
Lovely swirly synths (I'm a sucker for those sounds) and a well restrained development of part I. The melody in part II has a video game quality to it (kind of ancient and yet otherworldly) which works well between the harp synth and the vocals mourning. This is a particularly lovely passage.

Whoa - part III picks up like a classic Mike Oldfield album, and yes I get the training aspect. Great build here and a fine mix of synth sounds and textures. I like the rhythmic elements on some of the melodic lines with the syncopation.

Stately and powerful in part IV, with a nice introduction of the flute and synth to show the complexity of the character under the battle ready exterior.

Mix overall is really good to my ears, although I'm listening in headphones so level sensitivity isn't as careful.

This is a really fine piece that works together well and tells a story with a nice arc of development. Enjoyed it and thanks for the dload.

Thanks for the dload,
Doug

I don't know
anything about the background story, but the piece works really well on its own. I can't hear anything wrong with the mix - your bad ear can't have been getting in the way too much. Reminded me in parts of Vangelis. I like part 2 the best - very nice playing.

What they said...
Erin,
This may be the first of your pieces I've heard. You have a wonderful sense of story telling and your orchestration is evocative of the narrative line you are spinning. I enjoyed each section of this journey, most especially the harp solo in Part 2 which is gentle and so beautifully played. I know I'm a little late to hear this, but if you find my comment, please know that I enjoyed your composition and your performance of it very much indeed.
