Space Marines (MJ-Space Race 2011)

Description
They came, armed to the teeth. They conquered all before them...

A little tribute to my son's obsession with Warhammer. He's outgrown it now, and though I never really understood the rules of the game, I really liked the little painted figures, especially the Space Marines! Total technology in a fantasy setting.

This is my [rather rushed] offering to the SRC. Made with the Omnisphere and Vanguard soft synths. It's a little on the heavy side, and not my usual fayre!

soundtrack to a bored game
a co-worker spends countless hours (much to the chagrin of his family) hand-painting hordes of the figures, then playing games late into the evening/morning... much to the chagrin of the engineers he is supposed to be managing at work the next day. Oh, my bias is showing. Back to the music...

This is excellent, as usual, unique growly-bubbly textures and methodical-and-relentless forward motion, with complex rhythmic drive. This has "epic-on-a-miniature-scale" written all over it, not sure how you accomplished that.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Yes, it's not just kids is it? There's a Warhammer shop in the centre of Liverpool. I always have a look in. Often, there's a full blown battle happening on one of the gaming tables, with many adults in attendance. Obsessives eh? I don't think my son, btw, ever owned any of the Space Marine set. He had other "tribes" or "chapters", [whatever they were called] whose names escape me. I know about the Space Marines because I used to read his magazines. Sad eh? :-)

Mind you, Christmas was easy once. Buy him a couple of "Harbingers of Doom" or a set of "Termagants" and he was a happy kid!

Thanks again.

Heavy?
These are Marines, man. And the game is Warhammer: Heavy rules!
You're right, it's a little different in tone and mood but expertly put together, as usual, with the usual davamix of sounds and textures and rhythms. Cool entry.

I've been
waiting for you to break in on this scene Dave LOL, because I knew you would come up with some great sounds.... love that opening sound and beat, so powerful and 'alien-like'..... fantastic merge into that percussive beat...... so descriptive of some future space army doing their stuff...... love the depth of the sounds..... great stuff, regards M

There have
been some great entries, yes. Not so sure about mine really, it was rather rushed, as I've stated. Glad you listened though!

Space Marines
I expected an angry and noisy track when I saw the track name and genre, but this is soft synth track with a great intense atmosphere. I like it a lot!

Organic sound to it, like there's a stringed instrument playing in the background, and also just lovely synth sounds!

Great and crystal clear mix with a nice deep bass. Arrangement-wise, perhaps that cool bass variation at 03:48 could have been introduced sooner so there could be a return for it?

Thanks
I agree 100% about the bass. I should have done that indeed, but the end section was a bit empty and I put that in last of all. I'm really busy atm, and simply didn't have the time to do so. Would have been much better I think.

Pleased you think the mix is OK. I've not spent as much time as I would have liked on it.

Thanks again!

I hear that you begin to get control of Omnisphere, Vanguard is cool too.
It is easy to get a feel from the video game, I'm guessing your son like this? I do, I dream back when I was younger and played. Very well done, cheers

know there was a video game too. Yes, I'm sure he will have played it! I wonder if they need a soundtrack? :-D

I am sure they will win.
These marines entertain no self-doubt whatsoever! Everything here develops with perfect inevitability ( a rare trait), and your sounds are just terrific. Very well done!

Love,

Marines are, well, marines, whether they be in space or not. "Perfect inevitability" - I sort of like that!

Thanks for dropping by and your kind comments.

Starship troopers
"... to drive the enemy before you, to hear the lamentations of the women." Ah, guy stuff. My local shopping center had a Warhammer store. Plunked down $90 for a starter kit for my son, after a demo by a clerk. Got the kit home, started painting the figures. Day or two later, that was it. It never saw the light of day after that.

Heavy. Yeah, this almost could use a heavy drum track. The chord switches around 4:00 are used in a song by my favorite prog band Porcupine Tree. Hmmm . Yep, I could hear this as a heavy rock tune. I like it. It fills an unoccupied niche in this year's SRC, I believe. Well done. Love that Omnisphere.

Don't know of
Porcupine Tree, though I may have subconsciously ripped off their chord sequence after hearing a track somewhere. I doubt it though!

As for Warhammer, we spent a fortune over the few years he was involved, as did he. I don't know whatever happened to the little sets. They must have been given away I suppose. They were kind of cool, I have to say, and I can see why some people like playing the game.

Thanks, as ever!

Who could go wrong
with that software setup ;-) Well, I'm pretty sure I would, they are not easy folk to tamper with, or so I've heard... In little time you have produced a cool piece about warriors that could defend you if need be. No big hazard, though, as long as your music is this good ;-)

Actually, I've used a couple of seconds of it in my own entry, hope you don't mind. (With these guys around I'm starting to have second thoughts...)

Thank you and take care,
Henke

Thanks Henrik
Of course I don't mind, flattered in fact.

As for software, I think it is the hardware that the Space Marines rely on more. Jesus, I spent 3/4 hour yesterday watching the video link Kenta posted the other day. [see above] They have some real heavy duty firepower for wasting the orcs they battle with. Blood and gore - good stuff!

Thanks again.

Space Marines .......The Blood Ravens
Dawn of War 40,000.....you have just stumbled across my guilty secret ...I love the genre and play it on P.C. This would fit nicely into the background of some of the skirmish battles that are included.......well cool, both in execution and of course the inspiration....."Space Marines.Attack !!"

Sorry I am just a big silly.......

You
are an honest man! I can see why though; it would have been quite easy for me to get into all this, I know. However, I resisted, thankfully! Doom II was my downfall. Caused a slipped disc which still troubles me. :-(

Thanks for dropping by.

action figures
Thankfully I escaped all that warhammer stuff though several friends kids had them.
Well, it keeps them off the streets causing trouble.
Anyway, great stuff and maybe a touch more 'menacing' than your ambient stuff..which is still fine by me.
I was thinking Bladerunner listening to this and thought it would fit the soundtrack really well.
Great stuff
cheers

Could be
a soundtrack to a movie. It isn't at all violent. I think it could work as the sounds behind views of a spacecraft whooshing through space, passing planets, stars and other space stuff. Thanks.

Those synths were busy!
I find it incredible that anyone could just rush something as nuanced as this is to meet a deadline. It sounds too well considered, like it has stewed to perfection in a slow cooker.

That aside, there's a nice symmetry to the piece and a powerful sense of forward motion that you bring. Love the rhythmic little fiddly bits, and the burbley (such a word??) falling synth.

Appreciate it being downloadable too!

Very trance-like, yet it always feels as though there is a specific destination in mind. It brought to mind the soundtrack from the movie Pi, which is one of my favorite electronic collections. Thanks for the trip and for getting everyone back in one piece!
