Description
This song started over 2 years ago. It's another track from the still unfinished Celebrity Torture project I'm writing with Graeme Hobbs from my old band.

He gave me some lyrics and a melody with the vague notion of a ska song. Whatever I tried didn't seem to work but I couldn't get the melody out of my head. A few weeks ago the melody had become so insistent that I just started banging it out on the 12 string acoustic, added another verse and this is what happened.

Celebrity Torture is a game show like X Factor or American Idol. The winner gets to be famous and live happily ever after. In this song our hero has finally made it big and thinks he's got it made but that's not how it works.

I don't think I've ever spent quite so long mixing a song. Partly because I mixed it in Logic and wasn't sure what I was doing half the time and partly because I didn't really know what sound I was after. That's why I sent it to Steve Nylander http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=504263 one of the Zoom Home Recording musicians who has a reputation for "magic ears". Luckily he also plays a mean bass so I asked him to play bass as well as help with the mix on this. I can't thank Steve enough for the help, advice and suggestions he made during the creation of this song.

I then asked Pete Young http://www.bluevale.net/ another Zoom musician to add some backing vocals (nice aaahs Pete!). He also gave some very good feedback on the mixes.

Apart from thanking Steve and Pete I'm also grateful to Tim de Ferrars (Macferret) and Charles Evans (Sir Dennis Crowther) for honest, constructive crits of the mixes I sent them.

I played all the percussion (not the drum loops of course!)and managed to use a few instruments that don't often get a look in here

Mostly tracked in GB and then mixed in Logic.

Dick: vocals, acoustic and electric 12 string, 6 string electric, uke, banjo, tambo, shakers, cajon, wooden stick thing
Steve: bass
Pete: harmony vocals

House of Straw © 2009/2011 Hobbs/Langford

Well we were tempted by forbidden fruit
As they lied they smiled and smiling slyly hid the truth
I know that we were greedy and easily led
But the wolves are always hungry and they're wanting to be fed

We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go
We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go

They'd leave us ruined as those those went before
And their heavy threats are pushing up against our door
But there's one thing I have left that's guaranteed and true
It's my love, it's my love for you

We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go
We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go

Now they've come to take what I thought I owned
Never realised, it was only just a loan
This is such a cruel world and I don't know what to do
But I could lose all that I have as long as I kept you

We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go
We're living in a house of straw, wild winds are blowing
So hold me close don't let me go

Addictive
thanks Karen, it was truly addictive for me. But 2 years to get it together? :)

Thanks for the listen and comments. I have to thank my wife for the vocals as she told me the original was pants and so I redid them!

Thanks again!

Cheers

Dick

"But I could lose all that I have..."
Nice line, super guitar (who knew?), great vocals, as usual, though this is not the DWL I'm used to hearing. Harmony and bass elevate the track nicely.
Cheers.

Thanks Richard
I hate being predictable but this was a departure from our normal quirky songs.

Graham wrote some terrific lyrics and a great melody and I was eventually the conduit.

Thanks for the comments about the harmonies and bass, I'm sure Pete and Steve will be very please to read them.

Cheers

Falsetto?
I wish :)

This took me so long to do and even when I thought it was OK my wife said no and I went back to do it again (but very pleased I did!)

I really appreciate the listen and comments.

Love the vibrant 12 string acoustic guitar opening. Wonderful vocals and harmonies. Great guitar sounds. Man the 12 string electric and acoustic together work so well. Nice ending with the mandolin. You did a good job with the drums and percussion. It's a real good catchy tune and it makes me want to listen again. I'll listen to this on my commute tomorrow
Thanks
SG.

Thanks Stan
I do enjoy the acoustic 12 string but I can't use it on everything!

Thanks for the comments on the drums and percussion. Apple drum loops for the most part but it's finding the right ones that's tricky! It was fun to play percussion (even it was only tambo and shakers)

Cheers

Yeah!!!!!!!!
Dick & Company....this is just stellar all round. I can't add much more to the wonderful reviews given by the audience here, but it is definitely well earned. Great job guys and I can easily believe you spent long, arduous hours on this mix because it's aces. Thanks again for the topnotch music this evening. Applause! Michael

Persistence...
Hi Dick. Very good song with some quality vocal work. The mix is spot on. I like the use of all the stringed instruments and Steve and Pete's contributions are well done. 2 years is a long time to have a song floating around in your head but your persistence has paid off. Thanks for the D/L. Regards, Peter.

Very nice indeed, love all the guitar work and vocals (singing a bit higher than normal in places). A well produced track too...lots going on but lots of space.

Loved hearing
just the guitar and your voice for the beginning part and when the production kicks in it really lifts off. All parts fit/played perfectly. Great song and really pro sounding mix/master. Congratulations to you all.

it's a grower
I had a quick listen of this the other day and wasn't to sure but I was in a bit of a rush so I came back to give it more time to listen. Builds up slowly and then gets going very nicely' I like the bass tone on this. Sort of Smiths ' Pretenders feel to the jangly guitar..as well as the Byrds.
Better produced than the Byrds.
Good catchy song

Lots of energy, strong melody. I like the way the arrangement builds. Cool transition between chorus back to verse. I really like that driving 12 string, bass & slide guitar are great. Great mix.

You never disappoint
Sounds like a commercial mix, complete with session-quality musicians and hot solos. It's a good tune at its heart, and would be great in any context, but the extra polish just makes it that much more sparkly. Nice wind-up to the piece as well - nothing overlooked!!

Take care,
Doug

Terrific job on this, Dick. The production sparkles and it's full of interesting and unique musical diversions, including the guitar solo and the *country-ish* outro. I enjoyed it from start to finish. ;)

mix
Sounds pretty good. At least when the whole band comes in. Initially I was going to say a tad too much reverb on the vocals, definitely compared to the guitar. I was sort of expecting the vocals to disappear in that reverb when the rest came in, but it somehow sorted itself out.

Reverb
is so difficult to judge. I was never sure if there was too much on the voice but after listening to it so many times I gave up trying to decide!
