Description
Of all the stories that run around in my head the Ariadne story comes back around again and again. The good stories tell us that we'll never find what we're looking for but that we should try anyway, that the clues, no matter how small, are worth all of our effort. That's what this song is about. I like it, I think it's a pretty little tune. At any rate it's my last song of the year - time for sitting around and playing Christmas songs.

Lyrics
i recall
a towhead tike
in a hand me down dress
on a secondhand bike
trying to keep up with her brothers and me
on the way home from school in pine creek

and the thought of your golden hair in the moonlight
is still the thread that I make my way home by

i recall
a lettermand miss
sitting on a creek bank
with a can of schlitz
some high school running back trying to get fresh
one hand handing me a beer
one hand laying on her neck

and the thought of your golden hair in the moonlight
is still the thread that I find my way home by

Very nice tune. I like the simplicity of the arrangement with all the added textures. Excellent vocals and harmonies ( cool low harmony panned left). The harmonica brings it down to earth for me. I like how you did the drums. Solid bed with out being too out front.
A warm mix. Really enjoyed this tune.

texture
i was working with the thread and labyrinth idea, i wanted this one to have a lot of little melodies that sometimes went clear through and sometimes dead ended. Glad you liked the harmonica and the drums. Dennis Wilson always played a lot of little rolls between snare hits and i was thinking of that when I arranged them. Thanks for the close listen!

Mythos of Youth
We always pursue the beast that is remembrance of the past, sometimes with tears, sometimes with smiles. Shards of those reflections, told so well. Freshness and feeling throughout.

Refreshing...
Hi Craig. Quite a unique structure and feel happening here, which makes it refreshing and interesting. Catchy, in a highly stylized way. Enjoyed. Take care, Peter.

highly stylized
i futz around with every tune forever. i love the process of going from rough draft to finished project. i've always been envious of how painters can start with a blob of color or a line and end up with a painting. glad you enjoyed the tune, thanks!

not the last song forever! (i hope)
it's funny, i do the songs for fun but they're a lot of work, and i like to throw myself a bone at the end of the year and just noodle around on guitar with no real purpose. it's my 1.5 month escape from my artistic OCD :)

wow, really genius arrangement. I really liked the keys and the beach boys backing vocals. I'm envious of the nice warm production sound, great fat low end nicely balanced off by the tinkling piano part...
catchy chorus with the evocative lyrics is icing on the cake...
I look forward to more Tempie in 2012. DL'ed!

vocals
i listened to this a million times and still, right after i posted it, i found two more things to adjust. there are a yo la tengo amount of instruments in there. i love it when the backing vocals come together just right, it's mostly luck, and then when there are so many parts i worry that some will get lost, but i think with headphones at least you can hear all of them at the right times. i always feel like i'm not really very good at that, I think lennon (eric v) is the master of the beach boys backing vocals. also, i wish i could sing like mike love for the high parts.

Always so original
Like your choice of instruments on this track. "and the thought of your golden hair....", great hook.

You are one of the most original dudes here. Loved it.

ha one of my coworkers is just sure that the world is going to end today. maybe it will! although like i told him, it would be more magical if that "20" wasn't in there, if it was 11/11/1111. \thanks for the 'original' comment, i appreciate it, and glad you liked the tune.

i'm fascinated by the idea of nostalgia. i think it's a metaphor for the human condition.

almost too much going on
with this one i was teetering on busy, so I had to really work at the mix to get some space in there. i've found that i lost some hearing in one ear, so i have two completely different mixes depending on what earbud is in what ear, and then which ear i have facing which speaker, etc. like they tell boxers, hit the one in the middle, i just have to make sure both sound good.

Full of Surprises
Although this is obviously, undeniably a song by Tempie, it's not your average Tempie toon. This is a pretty little tune (and I love the graphic you chose to go with it. They seem to fit well) and it demonstrates yet another side of your multi-faceted musical stylings.

It's a good thing this song isn't loud and raucous enough to be a ringtone. It's a good song, buddy boy. You're full of surprises.

D/L'd and one of my most favorites of yours ever.

you too, are full of surprises
i kept waiting for the punchline, but this was grown up Bob writing. What did you do with the kid? should I call the po po? (he says in his best madea voice).

seriously, thanks man that was a feel good comment. i have enough self esteem now to last until Friday, at least.

This is the most trippy Ive ever heard you, but still its 100% Tempie thats what I like about your music, complex but so simple in the composition the vocal break is over the top,

thanks for sharing!

I like the lyric, it's one we can easily relate to. We've all had that girl in our lives that most likely we never got as close to as we wanted. Some beautiful textures in the arrangement. One of your best.

i appreciate that. i was thinking about that girl alright but also about what the girl represents in memory, because a long time ago you stopped thinking about her as a person and she occupies your memory now as an idea - about youth, about friendship, about wanting what you can't have, all that stuff. thanks for the close listen, i appreciate it.

I thought I was the only one who had ever heard of Ariadne's Thread. And that cost my dad a college education. Very deep. And so wistful. Very nice song. Deep. I'm still trying to back off and let the song breathe the way your racecar song sort of taught me.

You're getting too good dude. This has shades of Lullaby for the Working Class in the arrangement and Jonny Polonsky in the vox, all filtered through the Tempie - iser. Gorgeous song, beautifully produced. Those little guitar licks are amazingly cool. Top tune

golden hair in the moon light
great chords with a classic feel good melody. really like the guitars cutting across the grain as you lay the story on top in the bridge. and of coarse the mention of schlitz is a memory to me as well

Sweet
I forgot that every thing you make is freaking awesome. I especially enjoyed the wandering solo guitar part. More harmonica would have been nice, but I'm partial to the instrument so that's personal opinion.

Also I am fairly certain that you are the first person to use the word towhead since 1957.
