A Brisk Walk in the Autumn Forest

Description
I couldn't help but add a few bars of this in my Space Race Challenge piece (Souvenir of Space), but here it is in its "full length" - 1.45 minutes...

The interesting thing with it is that I made most of it while commuting to and from work on Garageband for iPhone. I started with the shuffling drum and messed it up not knowing exactly how to work on the small screen but ended up with this rather nice toe tapping rhythm. I added some guitar chords (not very smooth perhaps, but I never was a guitarist, and it was recorded on a bus on a bumpy road ;-) Went on and added an arpeggiated piano. Then I experimented with some synth sounds for some kind of melody and ambience. The "melody" you hear now was rehearsed in the woods between the underground/subway/metro station and my work. I guess that's where the title came from.

Already at this point I had to play it all over again, all the time, but it was only 8 bars long! Eventually I learned how to put together a "full length" song on the phone by copying and pasting and making some changes between the snippets, but soon after that I also had it copied to the iMac for a little bit of post production. Here I added the mixed choir for example as well as a little automation and eq-ing.

The build is a bit like the one on my previous Chrystal Meditation 2, only it's a bit faster in tempo. (If you need a more soothing autumn piece I might recommend Kassia's beautiful "Theme #1"...)

For good measures I thought I do a video as well. I tried to make a movie with the iPhone, while taking a brisk walk in the woods, but I got totally sea sick watching it. So instead I found these beautiful photos my eldest daughter took of some other members of my family last autumn. I think they convey a sense of motion at least with the help of the Ken Burns effect and fairly quick paced picture changes.

Hope you like it and that the YouTube movie works (it's only there for you guys, it's not supposed to be spread all over the internet ;-)

How wonderful...
Great scenery, and the daughter and her dog were beautifully photographed (please tell the photographer she did VERY well.) And I should mention that the music kept my smile happily in place. Very refreshing music and images, much like a... maybe a brisk walk, on an Autumn day, yes! :-)

Thank you Eduard
Glad you liked this. I feel it wins with a bit of repeat, it's only after about a hundred that I feel I may have heard it before ;-) I told L and she looked pleased :-) These photos are from last autumn, but this year she is taking a photo course at university level, and she is also helping me out at work as a "picture editor" to the new web site I should have ready before Christmas. (It's her dog too, by the way.)

Good that you heard a bit of autumn in it. I regret that last word in the title, though. With this slideshow a full stop after autumn would have sufficed, I guess. O well...

Again, big thanks for your continued support!

Take care,
Henke

First I tried to make a video with the iPhone as well and then it all sounded and looked like a commercial for Apple (a lot of "i"-stuff involved in the production). I really think this little video turned out much better. Thanks to iPhoto. Oops...

Anyway, glad you liked it! Take care,
Henke

Absolutely delightful
both music and video, but independently the music is a very pleasant sonic excursion. Lets hear it for the iPhone/apps that let you put this together during what could be, serious downtime.
An enjoyable post and description. Thanks.

Henke said 2049 days ago (November 17th, 2011)
Thanks
I was quite surprised that I actually managed to make something "stick" on the iPhone. I tried another music studio app earlier but never came to any recording, but with GB it came really natural. Since then I have been doing a bit of jamming as well, without recording, but anyway. Glad you enjoyed and took the time to comment :-)

Take care,
Henke

P.S. In general I actually read a lot of my books on the iPhone nowadays, so downtime is pretty scarce ;-) Now I am on The Hound of the Baskervilles, one of many Sherlock Holmes books I've read this year. They are really quite fun.

It's amazing
What you can do with portable devices for music and video. This is a bright and joyous tune and your video suits the music perfectly. Just the right light touch.

Your daughter's photos look like my own daughter many years back. A lovely post!

Cheers,
Doug

I am glad
you hear a bit of happiness in this, since life isn't all that happy at the moment (a lot to do at work etc). I guess it has helped making a few songs this autumn, and listening to all the other great music around here at MJ. Isn't this a great place :-) Thanks a lot for having a listen and commenting.

Well, thank you
It was quite fun to make a music video this way, and didn't take very long either. Thanks to my daughter for taking too many photos of the same thing (these were not all!) ;-)

The dog is a Dutch Keeshond. She is the cutest dog and usually very sweet, but is easily frightened and then barks rather loudly and sometimes seemingly without reason. The daughter is 9 1/2 in the video, and yes, very sweet, almost never barks ;-)

Thanks a lot for listening and commenting. Take care,
Henke

A brisk composition
This is quite lovely I have to say. The overall feel is pretty relaxed and happy, I like that. It is also nice to hear a music that has been produced on different places - one of them being your way back home from work, awesome! It is great they did the garageband for iPhones now so that people can capture their inspirations righ on spot where they are. Very nice and inspiring track!
Cheers

And I'm glad I could convince with this little relaxed theme. My working days are not all that relaxed these days, so I guess I needed to do this to "survive". Thanks for listening and commenting!

A Brisk Walk in the Autumn Forest
I love the shuffling rhythm and your guitar chords work perfectly. All the sounds are very airy and the whole piece works nicely with the video snaps. Here in the east coast of Canada we have had a beautiful autumn ... There is a wonderful melancholy to the season. I enjoyed listening.

I like melancholy
especially in music. Maybe not so much of that in this piece, but anyway. I believe the area around the big lakes are not that much different from what we have in Sweden. A cold and dry autumn can be so very beautiful with all the yellow and red colors in the trees.

Glad you approved of the guitar here, cause that is not my strong point at all. GB made it easy for sure, but still, this was made on the bus ;-) About mixing, you can do some of that in GB for iPhone, but not any automation I think. But you can pan each track and attach reverb etc. The final mix on this one was made on the Mac, though. I think that the tracks come out as individuals and still work as a whole.

Thanks for commenting so nicely and take care,
Henke

Wow, thanks
From your earlier comments I would not think that you are very easily impressed, so I feel much honored :-) Actually, it's probably Apple that would take most of the credit. I saw that CNET(?) wanted to give the app more than 5 out 5 available stars... Anyway, thanks for trying it out more than once, made my heart swell a little (when I read it on the iPhone while still in bed this morning ;-)

Henke

Thanks for watching
Yeah, sometimes I need a hint too, as to what the music is about. A title, some text, a song art picture - or a video. But it's also nice with music that really tells the story by itself.

I've got an old maxi single with Tangerine Dream for example, where the music CLEARLY says that one of the songs is Polish Dance and the other quite as clearly is Warsaw in the Sun, but the label says the opposite. And I think the same "mistake" is made on the double LP album (Poland) as well, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks again and take care,
Henke

I was lucky to have that shuffling drums for starters and then the music came pretty much by itself. Often that is the case when "I" make music (when I try too much I just make noise ;-)

Composing on a bus - that's working under pressure :-) However, the result is a delight, plenty of urgency in the music that suits the theme well. Clean recording. Delightful video.

soft and atmospheric
I really like what you did with the drums , it does shuffle its way along and the other instruments seem to gradually come out of the distance.
Yes it all kicks in nicely and I am enjoying the ride and then , it's over . Like a single fairy snowflake that melts onto my salt-wet palm , kissing its last moments upon my skin before dissolving between the warm webs of my fingers. :-(

Or I could just hit play again. :-)
Ha ha well done Henke , its beautiful and works with the photos. Beautiful country there and a very photogenic girl too.

iPhone music...
I don't understand how you could put this all together on an iPhone and keep all the parts straight in your head, but the final result is an enchanting little piece that is peaceful and pleasant and perhaps a little plaintive, too. I thoroughly enjoyed these few moments in the midst of your creative impulses. I am still shaking my head in wonder as to how you wrote this. Wow.
