Description
Ok.. so it's time to quit obsessing over this one. It has been a very long time coming. I wrote this in 2009 and only had a rough guitar and vocal to it. It was collecting dust while Ed and I were developing our relationship. We had started sharing projects back and forth even if it were for nothing other than opinions on mixes. We shared long conversations on Skype and Ichat, whichever was working better at the time. Most of you know how close we became. I sent him this song for an opinion and didn't really think much of it. We discussed it at length and he actually said it had kind of a Bonnie Raitt blues feel to it. The more we discussed it the more Ed wanted in on it and the more excited he got about it. The very next day he had a good portion of this song built with a combo of audio and midi loops, (although I think he wrote both the midi drums and midi bass lines himself) when he discovered the timing differences in it. Being who he was rather than fix it, he decided to ask me if I had "meant" to do it. Well that gave me a good laugh cause I have never paid much attention to timing when writing my own tunes, much to the frustration of other musicians when trying to play them live lol. I said I could change it to correct the timing and he paused, and said that it wasn't necessarily wrong, it just wasn't done as a general rule. I said run with it if it wasn't going to get in the way of working on the song and boy did he ever run with it. The day after, he sent me everything you will hear sans the vocal and lead guitar. The man was a genius as I discovered with this one, although I had kind of guessed it already. I went to visit Jeanne and Ed in June of this year and he asked about it being as patient as he was, it had been 6 or 7 months by this time. I said I was up in the air about the lead guitar and was gonna farm it out to someone. He immediately recognized that it would be very difficult to play to without knowing where the timing changes were and the lead guitar would almost have to have an improvisational slant to it. He was right once again and actually went as far as mapping it out in a new project on logic so you could visually see the changes with markers. I'll say it again the man was a genius.
Enter my old songwriting partner from the nineties, Greg Roulston. He lives in St. Catharines Ontario 2000 kilometres away from me. He and his family used to live here in Calgary and returned for a visit in August. We sat down on a Saturday night just he and I like old times and I'll be damned if he didn't repeat almost verbatim what Ed had said about the timing of the song. Greg is a big Phish fan and coincidently had been listening and Jamming to their albums prior to coming out west . He said he would like to try the lead for this one. It didn't start well, he was having trouble with it, saying it really wasn't "resolving itself well" until he noticed the markers on the project. He was then able to put it together so it made some kind of sense for himself. He also wanted to give my Strat American Deluxe a play because he plays a Strat as well and had been playing my tele up until then. What you hear is the one take first take with the Strat. I started gushing after he was finished and Greg being who he is said "Ya…. I can live with that one" shrugged his shoulders and said something along the lines that I was lucky he had been so deeply into Phish as of late lol. We used to record our songs on a fostex 4 track back in the nineties so everything pretty much had to be a "one take" as we couldn't afford the switch available for the punch in punch out feature on the recorder lol.
This has become "their" song I wish the 2 of them could have met because Greg would have loved Ed at least as much as I do. I am just the singer here and I am still not comfortable with the sound of my voice lol. Without Ed and Greg this song wouldn't have been what it is. Thank you both so very much. With that I give you "Aint never been lucky in love"

I Aint Never Been Lucky In Love Guy Groves ©2009

I push and push till something gives
I want it to be right but it never is
I run head long into that very same mistake
I've made a thousand times before

Then I get so ashamed... and
tired of playin this stupid game
Maybe this'll be the one I get right
and I'll hold it all together……….

Chorus
and she won't have to buy
what it is that I'm selling
and I won't make her cry
with all the stories I like tellin
I aint never been lucky in love… guess I really shouldn't wonder why
I ain't never been lucky in love….it really shouldn't come as no surprise

Lead solo

I wanna reconcile whats on my mind
yeah it happens this way time after time
a bright eyed beautiful smile comes along
and i… I start this shit again

Tryin to make her buy
what it is I'm selling
wind up makin her cry
with all the stupid shit I'm saying…
I ain't never been lucky in love…. I guess I really shouldn't wonder why
I ain't never been lucky in love… it really shouldn't come as no surprise
I ain't never been lucky in love… it really shouldn't come as no surprise

Fascinating story as to how this was produced, and it obviously means so much more than just the music. However, the music is superb - full of skill and zest in the playing and heart in the vocals. Thanks for the download.

Wow, man! This is pretty awesome, and you're probably the only one who doesn't like your voice, because I think it is awesome. This is proof of why musicians need to collaborate more instead of being holed up in their studios trying to do it alone.

The production was great and everything fit in the mix well, there was no mushiness anywhere. I especially appreciate that you didn't try to hide your voice in the mix, because it sounds great and is balanced perfectly. Your lead guy was excellent, too

This kinda gives you that feeling of one of those old Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino movies. This would be on the soundtrack if i was driving down the road somewhere in a southwestern desert at 2 a.m. trying to evade a federal marshall.

Brian
I owe you a debt of gratitude with all of this. You were the first to really encourage me to actually try to collaborate. I was one of those control freak musicians who tried to try and do it all on my own. I first realized that when your suggestion for me to collaborate led to 4 versions of "The One" which in one, you helped me explore the potential of that song and in turn led to me meeting and getting to know Ed. Thank you my friend I look forward to meeting you one day as well.

Maybe Not In Love, but...
... clearly in your choice of friends. LOL!

You are plenty lucky, Guy. I never got around to collaborating with Ed, although I had a couple of country-flavored tunes I had hoped to add his magic touch to. *Sigh*...

Anyways, this tune turned out very well with a little help from your friends, Ed and Greg. You didn't do so bad yourself. The song and vocal are somewhat reminiscent of Tony Joe White ("Polk Salad Annie), although you're missing the thick southern accent he had. ;)

Nicely done all around. I'm downloading this one. ;)

Not sure what to say!
Guy (and Ed, looking on) this is a fantastic piece. Ed's backing tracks are really, really good, and you and Greg have done a terrific job too.

Excellent production Guy. This stands on its own without the obvious emotional factor - a very fitting memory-piece for Ed.

Fantastic job Guy. Ed would be very proud of this I'm sure.

Best wishes from Oz,
Neil

Never Been Lucky
You know, some songs got it - that magic ingredient that makes me say "how did he come up with a groove like that?". This is just cool cool cool. Your vox are just right for this tune; great lead guitar, and Ed? The guy was a master of his craft, plain and simple, and we all miss his presence here! Great work, Guy - congrats!

Ed was amazing. I hit him up for some steel guitar help and he was immediately into it, really enthusiastic and then I found out later from the forums that he was sick. He never mentioned it, just did his daily thing until the end. That's a man. Anyway this is incredible dude, I love it. Love the bass, the rhythm and the lead and as always your vocals, I was trying to think who they reminded me of and then it hit me, you've got a clapton phrasing thing going on here. Never been lucky
Hey Guy. Loved the laid back floaty feel to this and some killer guitar tones. A well crafted tune and the instrumentation all fits together, a place for everything and everything in it's place! Definitely a driving song I think! I can imagine it playing as you drive along one of those long straight roads. Your voice is killer on this; just the right amount of gravel and Greg's guitar licks punctuate nicely. And as for our good friend Ed... what can I say? I miss him, his music, his talent, his humour.

oh yeah!
Great collab, I love the vocals and the overall groove. The bassline is a little different than you might expect for this type of tune, which adds to the interest level. Clearly you and Ed had a good thing going musically! Thanks for posting it.
