Private Eye

Description
There's something a bit unsettling about being in a cheap motel . . a feeling of hearing everything from the other rooms . . and being heard . . through paper thin walls. This is a song about someone in that position, quietly reading a paperback thriller and gradually becoming thrilled/chilled and immersed in the character in the book . . sort of a 'monster in the cupboard' thing.

Lyrics
He talks to you from the folded pages of an old paperback book
Seems he’s got the eyes to know everyone and where to look

There’s a Private Eye, and he’s watching you
Through a crack in the doorway, he can see everything that you do
There’s a Private Eye, and he’s listening to you
With his ear to the wall, he can hear everything little thing that you do

You go stumbling into a single strip light whisky midnight bar
Full of broken lives and broken people and dreams that didn’t get very far
He says pull up a chair with this whisky bottle - sit at his right hand
And I’ll tell you about eveything you don’t need to understand

There’s a Private Eye, and he’s staring at you
He’s outside the window, he can see everything that you do
There’s a Private Eye, and he’s talking to you
With his lips to your ear, he’s whispering the words you want to hear

So you close the book, close the door and hope you never meet
He says close your eyes lock up tight and I’ll visit you when you go to sleep

He’s watching you
There’s a Private Eye, he’s watching you

She cracks the mirror against the wall she can’t stand its reflection
All she sees when she looks inside is her own imperfection

Private Eye
The guitar lines certainly gives that thriller/chiller feel to the song, as does the vocal style. Solid beat underneath. Clean mix. I like the varied tones you use with the guitar. Much enjoyed!

Thanks Philip
I went for a kind of late night, black and white, down at heel kind feel with this - and it was a great excuse to break out the Gretsch too!

love that...
descending guitar riff - very much like some of the dark psychobilly stuff that was around in the eighties. I particularly like the minor chord that rings out at the end of the riff. Sounds like elvis gone bad.

Thanks Smokey B!
Yup the minor chord was a nice little twang on the Gretsch, it's a great guitar for that kind of feel - loved the comment re Elvis gone bad . . made my day!!
All the best!
