Suite For Toy Guitar

Description
Just got to my mind that today is exactly 7 years since firts I entererd and signed in here on MacJams, (December 13 is easy to remember since it is the day when Sweden celebrates Lucia).

I want to celebrate this seven years anniversary by posting a thing I recorded almost ten years ago. The story:

I had just given my then five years old son (who is today MJ:er Mackie) a guitar (the one on the pic).

I soon found that this toy actually was quite tunable and playable. And it had an inpiring tone. This suite for toy guitar was made out of an hour's (or so) recording just playing around, exploring, enjoying. Thereafter I cut it down. Discarded lesser parts. And this is what remained.

Since then It has been staing on hard disk. It has been copied furhter to newer hard disks following newer computers. And here it is, out of the dark drawer for the first time.

hi johannes! first of all, happy 7 year MJ anniversary - you're one of a very few who has been around that long - one of the originals! secondly, the story of this suite is so .... sweet (sorry, had to do it), and deepens the enjoyment of this already wonderful work. we are very lucky to have you here - thanks for sticking with it, through thick and thin, and for posting wonderful music like this!

Soulful
The tone is quite lovely, in your hands, and I can hear why you were inspired by it. This is beautiful, straightforward, and soulful, and you perform it from the heart.

I am curious about what makes this a "toy" guitar; it certainly does not sound like a toy. I am giving my 7-year old his first guitar, 3/4 size, for Christmas in 12 days. He has said he wants to play electric guitar, so soon he will have one that is bright red, and which sounds pretty darn fine for a kid's guitar. Not sure if I should teach him, or if we should send him to someone else for lessons... he tends not to listen to me...

All the best to you and your loved ones this Christmas!

Toy guitar
If it, like this one, cost 30 bucks and is found in a toy store, then I feel safe to call it a toy guitar :) It doesn't stay in tune for very long, and if it is at all tunable and playable, is more sheer luck.

I myself didn't have anyone at home to teach me play guitar when I was a kid. To win knowledge and knack of playing was driven by my own enthusiasm and love for music and the instrument. I think that is one of the reasons I have never tried to teach any of my kids to play either. One of them though (mj:er Mackie) had the drive to learn, and he also learnt other things that I can't do, like playing piano. He has also learnt composing songs and to produce them with the help of very simple gear. Here is one example (supplied by a proud dad):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT68cxhUN9c

BTW, in this movie he is using a cheap 3/4 sise electric guitar that I gave him when he was younger. Mabe something of the kind you plan to get for your son(?)

Hardly a Toy
Not in your capable hands, my friend. In your hands it has truly become a very musical... instrument. It has been part of an elegant musical experience that I'm sure very few (if any) of its kind have ever had before. It's truly remarkable how good you made that little guitar sound. ;)

It just goes to show...
The music is not made by the guitar, it is made by the fingers playing it. Great photographs are not taken by expensive lenses, but by a knowing eye behind the lens. The man is not made by the hair on his head, but the thoughts in his mind.

And here is proof, with beautiful music coming from a simple instrument, and very talented fingers. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, through touching music, whatever instrument it comes from.

ttfn,
Drakonis

If
If I handed you a matchbox with a rubberband wrapped around it, you could play beautiful music on it. You're getting a great sound from the guitar so it must be a decent buy for your son. As always I'm blown away by your skill and feel of music. It goes to show that it's the quality player and not always the quality of the instrument. Thanks for sharing for 7 years here on Macjams.

Timeless toys
Out of dark drawers come forgotten gems. I like the simple classical aspect of this. It reminds me a cross between a hymn, a carol and an early lute solo. I love the ending. Thank you for ushering the holidays with this playing that transcends the level of toy but captures the essence of playing.

Yes, very sweet
It has a bit of a renaissance flavor at times. I listened at school (where I don't sign in) and was really enchanted - I took a few moments to reflect on how the technology lets us share our music further than ever before, but as always, it takes the heart of a musician to create that music n the first place. Thanks for this post & happy 7th anniversary (I 'turned 6' a couple of weeks ago.)

And thank you VERY much for all the warm willed backup you have given through these years! You have had the ability to say the most greatly nice things about the tunes. So much that I at times have had to guard myself from developing vanity :) Anyway it is so very welcome everytime. It spurs me to try to keep developing as a musician. And the fact that you are yourself such a great guitarist and musician doesn't hurt at all, rather the opposite. Thank yor Fran!

Gosh...
Was this the Stagg? I do believe we managed to buy our sons the same guitars on opposite sides of the world, didn't we? And now I don't even know where ours ended up...Probably parted with it in a yard sale...

You certainly ended making a very full and real composition with it, and the recorded tone is nice...I have a particular fondness for your "exploratory" guitar tracks. This takes me back to the days when I would be so delighted to see your name pop up in my emails and I'd head right over to see what you had come up with this time...
