Hollow Tree

Description
This is most certainly the darkest song I have written, inspired a fabulous charcoal illustration by Scottish artist Jamie Mackay. There is beauty in its cold desolation, the dark branches, those icy winter fingers . . and the song and the story just seemed to be a natural progression.

Lyrics
She said well don’t believe what I tell you, I said I don’t believe that I could
She says I wasn’t born a deciever, but I was born misunderstood

She says tell me your secrets, Tell me your lies
I can see the light by the moon in your eyes

And time stood still in a frozen field
And she took her heart to the hollow tree
She closed the door down deep inside
Turn the lock, lose the key
In the empty cracks in between the lines
She hid her love in the hollow tree
And she took her knife and carved her name
In the hollow tree - next to mine

She got an angel behind her shoulder, She got a devil behind her disguise
She got the sun and stars and the moon beside her,
Falling through space to the edge of the sky

Footsteps crack, echo sound
Icy breath over winter ground

And time stood still in a frozen field
She took her heart to the hollow tree
She closed the door down deep inside
Turn the lock, turn the key
In the empty space in the empty time
She hid her love in the hollow tree
And she locked her heart in a wooden box
In the hollow tree - so did I

Guitar Break

And time stood still in a frozen field
And she took her heart to the hollow tree
In the empty cracks in between the lines
She hid her love in the hollow tree
In the empty space in the empty time
She lost her love in the hollow tree
And she took her knife and carved her name
In the hollow tree - next to mine
next to mine, next to mine, next to mine

Thanks Baz
I went for a really cold guitar sound, kind of spooky with lots of swirling echos that seemed to suit the feel of the song

Almost
supernatural lyrics. It would make a good song for a movie soundtrack about some poor lost girl. Thanks.

Hollow Tree
Nice solid riff right from the off. A well structured and arranged song. I think the vocals could be a little more up front though as I always say this could well be because of my rock scarred ears. Excellent work and much enjoyed, thank you.

Rock vox!
Yup, it was a tricky mix on this one as the vocal is almost spoken - my usual style leans more to rock music so it was a real departure to do the vox this way and to try to balance the big backbeat. I enjoyed playing this one though and it was good to experiment with that swirly guitar sound . .
All the best

I like the poetry
but, for me, the drums are too forward, and I like percussion. Cool tune; interesting that you were influenced by that drawing.
Cheers

Hi Richard
I really like the Joy Division kind of big thumping beat and it was tricky to mix in those spoken vox against it. I appreciate your comments, it's great to have fresh ears listening in . . so often it's easy to hear things (or not hear things!) when mixing the tune after the 100th play through!
. . my own background is art school and fine arts and the drawing just flicked a switch and made me go 'wow!'
Cheers

post punk goodness
Nice blend of early cure and joy division with an industrial twist. Your voice is great for this kind of gothic darkness - is that another voice behind you, or your own voice treated and double tracked? The lyrics are really good too, very allusive. Really enjoyed that.

Thanks Smokey B!
Yup that was my good self doing the backing vox but with lots of effects on it . . I tried for a kind of supernatural spooky frozen feel throughout. Really appreciate your comments . .
Cheers

Hollow Tree
I like the hook and your allegorical lyric develops it well. Laid back 60's noir guitar is propelled nicely by the driving percussion. Vocal delivery adds to the dark vibe.

Thanks Dave!
I had the picture in my head of the frozen field with the girl walking barefoot and just kept it all as icy as possible. It was good fun to record with those swirly guitar bits and things . . !
Cheers!

Hollow tree
You certainly achieve the dark, icy feel n the song through the heavy drum beat and spoken lyrics. THe wailing guitar adds to it, too. Interesting tension between what I see as a dance beat and somewhat poetic words that require attention. Clean mix in which everything is able to be heard. I enjoyed listening to it!

Thanks Philip
It was quite a strange combination of big backbeat and spoken vox - I'm pleased you mentioned everything is audible as it was a fairly tricky mix! The words really came out all in 1 piece . . I put pen to paper and they just flowed!
Cheers!

Great ambience
Really paints a picture, the tone of your voice and the forlorn guitar effects. The backing vocal really adds to the effect as well.
