Gregorians On The Trail

Description
Before anyone chastises me that this is not Gregorian, I know. And the image is not Gregorians, either. They are Cistercians, apparently, from an album called, appropriately "Chant". But I beg your indulgence in allowing me a little artistic license: the title wouldn't work well as "A Bunch of Guys Singing ...", or "A Synth That Sounds Like ...". The second half of the title comes from the fact that it sounds to me a bit (ok, a lot) like Ferde Grofé's "On the Trail" from his Grand Canyon Suite. Putting the two together seemed natural ;-)

So, this piece contains three tracks: some slurpy bass (inspired by Daugrin's manipulation of my bass in his production of "Daddy's Little Girl"; Chelonian Mallets courtesy of the Alchemy synth; and VoxOrgana, also from Alchemy.

I am posting it so soon after my previous piece, because I didn't want the previous one to be prominent, or first, on my list of songs for very long; it was just a piece of silliness, and this is much more serious ;-)

I thought at first
that it was going to be a blues like Hell Hounds on my Trail........but that is typical of me......it is a nifty little track.....I would not call it a ditty....I will let Karen dare to ! I witnessed the amusing exchange in chat the other day ...I think it was re "Greensleeves" or What Child is this.....anyhoo back on topic this is darned good ...different and much enjoyed....those 'Mallets' are cool as is the Vox Organa....

Thanks Chris. I'm still waiting to do my first blues (actually, I have one but it's not for public consumption). Karen was calling her own piece a ditty and I was trying to not let her get away with it ;-)
Glad you were first, since it's such a serious piece.

Cistercians at the cistern?
Leaving imagery aside, this is a unique blend of ambient and chant. A laid-back downtempo chill blend with a rhythmic bass to keep me from falling asleep. I like it.

richard13 said 2043 days ago (December 17th, 2011)

Ok, no imagery, but there's really no chant involved. just a simple midi melody played on a synth that sounds like..., well, you know. The rhythmic bass (some might say plodding), on the other hand, almost puts ME to sleep, but I'm really happy you like it. Thanks.

Gregorians On The Trail
This captivating piece reminds me of the Police instrumental -Behind My Camel - The bass riff is beautiful and so very catchy. Much enjoyed.

Hey John. I may know that tune but not by name (odd title, don't you think?), but an association with law enforcement is a good thing, right? I really like the bass riff too, but see above. I can see (below) that you really, really enjoyed it. Thanks and happy to oblige.

Dick, you must be a true fan, subjecting yourself to my whacko, I mean intensely serious expressions of sound exploration. Thank you, mate (if I may call you that); I am truly happy you got involved, but I missed the LP reference.

Gregorians
I like the "slurpy bass" description (and its sound). Love the way you let the bass underpin the tune thus allowing you to bring in and out a series of other sounds/instruments. It all works!

Glad you think this piece, over which I slaved for days, if not hours, works; and that you like the slurpy bass underpinning. So many people just seem to pour the slurpy stuff over top, but I decided to try the under thing and, voila! Thank you Philip, for taking the time.

This is serious.
(Well, except for the sound that reminds me of popping a finger into the side of the cheek...:)..I don't know what that is called.)
Men in bathrobes on their way to the spa ...just teasing. Nice. You are exploring and coming up with some unique work. Thank you.

richard13 said 2043 days ago (December 17th, 2011)

Char, Char, Char. I appreciate your intuiting the seriousness of this piece. The sound to which you refer is actually a preset on the standup bass, after selecting the Double Filter option (I believe), called Finger-Popping-in-Side-of-Cheek. Thanks for mentioning it.

Minimalist and very relaxing
Very nice - minimalist but doesn't need much more. I like the twisted bass. Was that an effected live bass or midi?

richard13 said 2043 days ago (December 18th, 2011)

Most of my pieces are relaxing Mike, because I can't play the keyboard fast enough for an energetic romp (although sometimes I use arpeggiation to keep folks from falling asleep). The bass is midi, played through the Standup Bass instrument, with Double Filter applied, as I mentioned to Char above. Glad you like, and my thanks.

Gregorian
Works for me; I'm chanting already
"the VoxOrgana, the VoxOrgana, the VoxOrgana"

Sounds kinda sexy or something.

I too liked
the contrast between the monkish and the whoppy choppy bass... soothing. What's wrong with "Cistericans chanting on the trail"? ;o) We could have a whole new forum post section for "Personal chants" too! :o)

Very nice!
The bass line is really rather cool and everything else sounded so pristine and with a lot of wonderful clarity--good pure sounds. I think you did a fine job here Richard--thanks aain (PS: Ferde also wrote the score for a "B" sci-fi movie of the 50s, "Rocketship X-M--I blinked twice when I saw his name on the credits!) Take care now and keep up the genuinely fine work! Michael

Hmmm
"Other" is a pretty good genre for this, haha. Pretty hard to pin down. The "chanting" track sitting at the very back was a nice touch. Good mix. It also reminded me of being underwater.

Gregorian works...
... for me. This has a surreal yet sacred feel to it. It could even be longer... allowing more of a concentrated slide into contemplative drifting. I'm glad you posted it. Thanks.

Thank you Jack for picking up on both the surreal and the sacred; neither were intentional but that's the way it goes sometimes.
