Description
A song about drug problems (not my own, thankfully). I was listening to a fair amount of U2 when i came up with the melody, though I needed an alternate tuning to access it (it's DGDGAD -- the same tuning in which The Tallest Man On Earth plays "The Gardner"). This one was a bitch to finish, but I'm kind of satisfied, I suppose.

Lyrics
Drown Like New Plaster

They came in a line wearing rigid cut clothes,
Raw from their rags and a decade on death row,
You said, “I am the color in your radio set –
I’ll drag your blues like a dog through dead cement.”

And you know I am loath to renege or repent
The burn and the bombast of this stern pavement,
You said, “I am the clawing at your nose –
I’ll be there at dawn to drag you off the road, and I want you, and I want you.”

You’ll kneel like a building that is sprinkled into earth,
Yeah, seal the furrows that will curl your bones into a ragged burning
Burning – oh
And you’re thrown like new plaster at the bent spine of a wall,
And you’re torn like new plaster in a tragedy of fall.

A slow slang of tendons to house your name,
A slow parade of weeping beneath the ground,
Your eyes hardened weary, I watched you go,
Your eyes choked the city till you saw it drown.

Like plaster pressed into a chamber of layered stone,
There is a silt that lingers long upon the cold spars of your bones,
I heard it twist your entrails tight and wind your eyes undone,
And though I’ve done you no wrong, I should not have left you alone,
Should not have left you alone.

I like the guitar part. It has an almost mandolin character. You know I always love your lyrics.

Cracking stuff Ben! Full of vim and vigour. When you say U2, are we talking around about Joshua Tree time? (Just a guess) as I head shades of that all through it, especially in some of the vocal phrasing. I'd love to hear some thumping drums behind this to drive it along and maybe a little background synth just for colour - just a little though! Ok definitely my new TF10 favourite tune! Keep em coming mate.

Strong imagery in the lyric. The primary guitar riff is compelling. The melody jumps around more then earlier efforts and your vocals have improved.

and i hear an awful lot of the late Jeff Buckley in a lot of your posts and i suspect you may have heard his material as well.Your pic even resembles the backside photo on his very amazing 'Grace' release. Thanks for causing some warm remembrances back to J.B who was very gifted and taken away far to soon. And just as well thanks for sharing your original work here.Good stuff!

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
