Tishomingo Blues

Description
I found this great blues song in one of my music books. I had never heard it, so I played it by sight-reading, and adding my emotions as it went along.

It is a song about Mississippi. I've never been there, so I hope if any of my listeners are from Mississippi they will forgive me if I have not captured the essence of deep south blues.

The song was written in 1917 by Spencer Williams.

First!
I love the rolling feel you generate in this one. I hadn't heard the tune before, and I'm glad I now have. You bring in little touches here and there to keep things moving and interesting. Excellent work!

I couldn't remember hearing it before either. That's why I had to sight read. But I'm happy with the results, if you are! Glad I could keep your interest! Thank you for listening and commenting!

Old School Blues
Like this piece very much. Nice piano playing. You give it a nice modern treatment so I would never have guessed it was so old. I hear a little bit of the melody from another old song Stealin in this. I guess all of those old blues melodies got passed around a lot.

Thank you so much for this comment! I like to play these old, old songs from the PD in way that refreshes them and makes them more interesting to hear in today's music world. Otherwise, they would get lost forever. Thank you again for your listening time.

If you've ever been to Tishomingo...
...you'd definitely get the blues.

As MJ's only Mississippian, as far as I know, and as someone who knows Tishomingo well, I give you a definite thumbs up for this. A great rendition.

BTW, the tune, with different lyrics than the Spencer Williams version, is used as the intro for A Prairie Home Companion.

Glad to see you back at MJ!

You made me laugh out loud! I'm so pleased to know that a native Missippian is aboard, and gives full approval of this effort. I had to go strickly with feelings and instinct. I did know about this being used for the Prairie Home Companion, and forgot to mention that in my description. Thanks for that remimder, too. And especially thank you for the nice welcome back!!!!
that means a lot.

Cees....
Thank you for checking this out! I'm glad you like it. But I have a question....when you say I keep it open, does mean that I don't put a lot of fill-ins between the original phrasing of the melody? I think I'm beginning to catch on to this music lingo. But it takes me a while. Thanks for being here.

Yes indeed Mom is back!
This tune is the theme song for the prairie home companion on NPR. Of course the words are different.
Thanks for posting Mom. Your arrangement sounds solid.

IN THE ROCKIN' CHAIR
RAY CHARLES Might have laid this out this way (Of Course the Rayettes would have had a Word, too!).

You're Fearless!

[Not from Mississippi, but had some assignments that let me get to know it some.]

Love that you did this, Sylvia.

Cooper

Ahh-So,
This sounds absolutely great Sylvia..... Now Mississippi ? Well the title had me thinking there'd be a Japanese influence.... unless 'Tishomingo' is Mississippi slang LOL...... nevertheless i really enjoyed this wonderful rendition.... sounds Fab... All the very best for the New Year, M

I have to admit i had thoughts along those lines too when i first saw the song title. But when i saw the lyrics i realized it was an actual place. Thank goodness for folks like Joe who keep us well informed, and for folks like you who just love music! Thanks for the listening and commenting time.

Hi folks. I hope you will enjoy my piano tunes. I play and arrange them all on either the Yamaha Clavinova or the Korg keyboard, never use backing tracks or loops. But if if I decide to try that someday you'll be the first to know!. It feels real... [see more]
