Description
I've been away for Xmas visiting family so I have a lot of catching up to do on MJ's. This I started a month ago. My last post of the year. I have always loved jazz and blues but never really had the chops to really play jazz. But I can feel it and I tried to create that feel with this tune. This was also an experiment in doing a complete time change in a garageband recording. I spent a bit of time on the drums trying to chop and add cymbal hits and drum accents to emphasize certain beats and had a lot of fun with it. Thanks for all the support at MJ's this past year ... I enjoyed being inspired by all the great stuff being made on this sight. Happy New Year to all!!!

Okay! Now for a comment!
First of all I find it hard to believe you don't have the chops to play jazz. You might not play it like Charlie Christian or Wes Montgomery. But you would play it like Stan and that would be a very good thing. This is a feast of tasty guitar sounds, melodies, and nuanced phrasing. Love the change to the fast bop feel. Your scat singing is awesome. Wild drum track! Love the solo!

From the opening phrase I knew you'd got the jazz thing right!
As it progressed some more typical Stan phrases entered. Of course, your guitar tone is modern rather than the woody bebop sound. The base this sits on is very jazzy - the sparse bass with its jumping lines being an important part of that (it's not easy to make that style of bass sound melodic but you achieve it). The interplay between the two guitars is a delight. I can certainly hear the time spent on the drums - are they all hand-written?! Great work, Stan - thanks for the download! And a Happy New Year (it's already 2012 here).

ah this is sweet
crazy timing in this so crisp that guitar playing is love when the bass starts walking the scatting and drum solo tops!
thanks for a nice gift like this for the new year!

No chops, eh?
G'way wit' ya man, ya done fine here, b'y!
It's always a good idea to stretch yourself a little and it sounds like you not only stretched but you may have gained a new skill or two. Good one Stan, and a groovy new year to you.

now that's a collage of cool elements. where to begin? the sweet, punchy notes around the 1 min mark? the groove starts ~1:40? so much packed in. and bass is kickin. really well-put together, Stan. the admiration stands solid.

What, no jazz chops?
You don't need them with something as accomplished as this.

Really fine playing, another level to me!

Superb and beyond that...
The opening bars remind me of the start of a pop song (the title of which I can't remember--Stevie Wonder maybe?). What follows truly is dazzling, inventive and just a plain, unadulterated joy to listen to and take in. This is my kind of music and you do it so extremely well Stan--it's no wonder I'm so fond of your work. Bop is what followed the swing movement and while it took me a while to develop a taste for it, I've very much enjoyed it for years now. Proof that you can make intellectually stimulating and rewarding music and still keep the audience entertained at the same time. One question I have is, are the voices yours? Whatever the case, that was a great touch! Thanks greatly for sharing this--loved it!

Michael!
Thank you again for listening and for all your kind words. Yes those are my voices. I was going to post the tune before I left for Xmas but I didn't because it felt like it had a hole in that spot. I thought about adding horns and harp and then guitar and then I just left it and went away. The day I got back I listened to it and grabbed my mic and started scatting and added a few harmony tracks without any second guessing and posted it. Yes, a vocal afterthought.
Cheers Michael

Thanks
After listening to your very fine jazz playing I am humbled. I can understand why you thought it was a tele but in fact it is my 1963 fender jazzmaster making those tones. Thanks for listening and for your comment.

Must admit Jazz isn't normally a genre I get, however, you cross it with a couple of different styles and that makes it a winner, great job you really can turn your hand to anything

bops to the tops
A delightful piece of music. Cool and swingin'. And what a drum solo, that was exceptional... but there's too much goodness here to pick out one thing, great guitar work, singing, bass line, loved the false-starts, and excellent mixing, with everything super-clear. Nice.

Man, you are getting a sweet tone from your instrument. I gotta say, i don't think chops are what make a player good. Rather, I believe in musicianship and choice of notes, with respect to which you demonstrate a very high level. Great job.

Close enough for Jazz
It's really what you make of it... and you've made something very cool here, Stan. It all works very nicely together and results in a very pleasant musical experience. As MJK mentioned it starts off suggesting Stevie Wonder's "If You Really Love Me," but it's only suggestive of that tune and quickly evolves into something all its own. Very nicely done. ;)

Come on Stan, how many of your Haligonian virtuoso buddies did you gather for help in laying down this tune? :)

Man, you are just on fire on all the parts here! Your attention to the drums sure paid off, but then the whole things sounds impressively great. An instant fave and dload. Best for the new year!

Doug

Stan, you got the chops, and then some... This is definitely a favourite. Love the interest it creates and the tempo changes. The guitar work, the bass, the drums, they all combine wonderfully. Thank you for all your inspirational music this year. Take care, Peter.

Unbelievable Composition!
The visit is told in the opening. I must say this is the most innovative and dynamic composition I have experienced at MacJams or any other site. My mind is in a wonder of contemplation. Absolutely perfect! Creation is the gift of humanity and you my man have created sounds for the ears of sages. Common in your approach..avant-garde in your delivery. I am without words to really describe my feelings. Enlightened!

Bop was the sound of my head
...the first time I heard this tune.
That guitar burst around 0:55 made me laugh and move my head in disbelief: how's possible you put THAT in THERE?
The sound of the track is like being in the room, deep, clean, natural (btw, LOVE that you decided to leave the hum of the amp up in the mix).
I think I downloaded it twice.

i saw this in your list under nujazz...and i was very excited to hear what you came up with. you don't disappoint. stan you're so accomplished and interesting in your composition.....this is seriously toe-tapping, head-noddingly good. the introduction of the church organ against the guitar solo is so smart.....and then we're into a new departure....and you're singing.....all 20 of you. those drums sound INCREDIBLE. why aren't you a huge recording star? the solo at the end......get out of here and showing us all up in our mediocrity.
