Description
Another cheerful ditty from the pen of Mr Richard Marris, written after a flight on one of the British economy airlines.

This is another song that has taken a couple of years and has gone through various styles and instrumentation from just me and an acoustic to full on thrash. Somehow we got caught caught up in the 80s and gated snares then introduced a touch of REM and maybe The Byrds.

Richard plays bass and a Tanglewood electric 12 string through a George Dennis Blue combo close miked with an AKG condenser.

I sang and buggered about with the sound. I'm not sure I have the 12 string parts balanced as well as they could be but I can't tell anymore. I realised the vocal clips a few times but I have a stinking cold and don't know how long it'll be before I can redo the vox.

It's a lot different to Mrs Lollipop ;)

BTW I believe you chaps over the pond may not know what scratch cards are. They are lottery cards where you scratch the card to reveal numbers or symbols that normally tell you that you've just thrown your money away and you would have been better off spending it in the bar.

Fly me © R Marris 2011

Pretty hostess on the plane
Selling scratch cards nobody wants to buy
Came all the way from Poland
Thought it might be glamorous to fly

And I am going for nothing
To a place I don't need to be
And I don't want to know about scratch cards
And I'm thinking she'd agree

But I want to be rich
Just like you
But if I ever get there
Here's what I hope I'd do

I'd buy a big house
I'd sit by the pool
And I wouldn't chase another pound
If it made a pretty girl feel like a fool

But money keeps on moving
And profit will find a way
And someone wil use the riches I spend
To ruin someone else's day

But I like money
Just like you
And going against the flow
Is very hard to do

Fly me
Take me
Anywhere but here
Take me out of this pointless misery

So I'll spend all my money
And I'll make the world go round
And I'll fly where I don't need to be
And I'll chase that extra pound

So sit there in your big house
And dream your greedy dreams
Be thankful there are losers like me
Too lazy to spoil your pointless schemes

So sell your scratch cards
Pester people on the phone
Fly those miles
Paint on those smiles
At least you're not alone

cool song
It definitely has an oldschool vibe , but can't exactly put the finger on it, what makes me think that
probably the vocals (british 60-s) and the twangy guitarsound reminds me of the Byrds
Yep, really cool song!

very possibly. I hadn't thought of it like that. We were trying for an REM and a Byrds type sound so I'm pleased that came through.

Thanks!

Get rich quick....
Tiiiiiiime warp.

Nice tune Dick. Your band keeps it light and bouncing along musically whilst the message in your lyrics is quite pointed (and on target I'd say). The harmonies are buttery good. If you have a cold, it doesn't detract in the least. Perhaps it just added character that you wouldn't be able to replicate if you re-recorded when you were well.

I think the tonality and balance of the mix sounded really good in my cans. Another hit from DWL et al.

Cheers Dick for the addition to your playlist!
Doug

We do have Scratch Cards here in Canada. There was a news article before Christmas saying that giving them as gift to kids is like a gateway drug to gambling.

Pointed messages are what we're about!
If I can I like to subvert the seriousness of the lyrics with something light (and vice versa!).

I completely agree with "gateway drug to gambling" comment. The lottery (and all its associated facets) is really just another tax on the poor.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment Doug. Much appreciated.

The missing Wilbury track!
I can hear Harrison singing this with Petty and co backing up.
Nice song Dick - terrific instrumentally, and I don't hear the cold in your voice at all. You've made me realise how much I need a Rickenbacker 12 string :) I suspect Jan may not see the urgency though - something about food being a priority!
Your songs seem to take a while to reach posting stage, but it seems you have quite a collection in the archives - looking forward to more (as always).

The 12 string is a cheap Rickenbacker copy. A few issues with tuning but not bad. http://www.rattleanddrum.com/product/8811/tanglewood-tjd-12-string-in-cherry-sunburst

Nice job on this very catchy rock 'n tune. Enjoyed your vocals, harmonies and lyrics. The 12 string sounds good!! It's funny how you can't hear it any more when you mix because you have listened to it so many times it becomes hard to be objective.
