Description
My first song in quite a while – this was inspired by my occasional overwhelming feeling of impending doom on a number of levels. I get it a lot when I read about US politics (although our own are equally worrying) ;) Don't even mention the Euro crisis or the Middle East!

Lots of percussion here.

You'd better start swimming when the tide comes in!

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Lyrics
As The Tide Comes In
©2011 Neil Porter

80 bpm

Get a sniff of summer on a northern wind
Another taste of heaven and your day begins
You take it all in your stride
You think you’re taking it in
Why do you feel like a man on an island as the tide comes in?

You feel a need for slumber on a feather bed
Somebody calls your number, why can’t they call your name instead?
Just take a look outside
You’re not taking it in
Why do you feel like a man on an island as the tide comes in?

You’re stuck on an island as the tide comes in
You’re getting wet feet as the tide comes in
You’re gonna be swimming when the tide comes in
The big fish circle as the tide comes in

SOLO

You’re stuck on an island as the tide comes in
You’re getting wet feet as the tide comes in
You’re gonna be swimming when the tide comes in
The big fish circle as the tide comes in

You got soft white sand underneath your feet
Lots of palm tree shade in the summer heat
You’ve got nowhere to hide
And your head’s in a spin
Why do you feel like a man on an island as the tide comes in?

Got a perfect life on a crescent beach
So many perfect days just out of reach
But there’s a rising tide
It keeps rolling in
Why do you feel like a man on an island as the tide comes in?

You’re stuck on an island as the tide comes in
You’re getting wet feet as the tide comes in
You’re gonna be swimming when the tide comes in
The big fish circle as the tide comes in

Sometimes
we watch the waves
wash up on the shore of our island
taking away the sand
grain by grain
until the day we realize
our island is gone

I couldn't get enough, Neil
So I downloaded for the days to come. I really love the island beat on this, and the picture, (Australia's much smaller than I thought.) Very nice break with the solo, and I love the lyrics and chorus. And yes, if you come to visit us over here, pack your rubber boots.

Watching the big fish
Great lyrics - it's all a bit scary when you see what's going on - and hiding your head in the sand doesn't work too well when the tide comes in! Love the groove of this, the bright mix, powerful backing and driving it all your distinctively smoky vocal. Excellent work, Neil!

your music
always has a strong rhythmic component.
Yeah politics can be quite disturbing... I live from day to day, take it as it comes... :-)
Here in the Netherlands the tides literally came in last week, some dykes almost broke.. and people had to be evacuated. the struggle against the water has been going on here since ages :-)
Cool song, Neil!

Wow! Great song! Love the groove and bass track. Great guitar sounds throughout. Love the organ. The chorus is outstanding. Great changes in sharp contrast to the verses. Love the lyrics! "Why do you feel like a man on an island as the tide comes in?" Great metaphor! A must have download!

I am so sorry
that you have those overwhelming feelings, Neil. And I have no magic solutions to prevent them. Writing about them, especially as well as you do here, must help mitigate them somewhat, but only for so long. And I suppose drugs might do the same. My only suggestion would be to climb that tree as high as you can and wait for the tide to go out again. (Actually, I have several other solutions, but none are practical, realistic, moral, or legal.)
It will go out again, won't it?

As with other songs of yours I have heard, this have wonderfully-provocative and intelligent lyrics, strong imagery, and excellent production. The lyrics are amazing; I am in awe of your talents in this area. Much enjoyed, thanks for posting!

Once again
an excellent song Neil.

Great lyrics and the trademark laid back delivery is well up to your usual standard.

Maybe it's an age thing but I also get those overwhelming thoughts and I despair of the world we live in. The only way I know how to defuse it (temporarily at least) is to accept that all we can do is try and control our immediate environment and do the best we can to make that as comfortable for us and those around us.

Cheers

nice
groove you've got going here. I think the instrumental aspect of this track is really, really great. The organ is catchy, the drums are thunderous, and the guitar adds a lot of color. My one issue is that you seem to be cramming syllables into your vocal phrases (something I'm definitely guilty of), and, as a result, your vocal melodies are somewhat compromised. Overall, excellent track.

Thanks for the comment Ben
I'm very aware of the problem I have with too many syllables in a line, and have, on occasions, tried really hard to cut them back. Would you believe this is actually less cluttered than I originallt wrote it!

I realised the problem when I started singing live with the band and I just couldn't remember all the words. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the song, and I really appreciate getting some constructive criticism. Also glad you noticed the organ - it's very much NOT my instrument :)

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Strong groove
You have a natural instinct to make interesting and engaging rhythms in your work, both in the vocal line as well as more obvious places like drums and guitar. A sobering topic which is well underlined by your pro delivery here. Another good one Neil. Appreciate you expanding my collection with such fine material :)

Cheers,
Doug

Great sound
NIce rhythm Neal. I can identify with the feeling but can't put a good finger on the question of why you feel that way; there are so many reasons, some of them good ones. Despite the lament, the song still has the "taste of Heaven" on the "perfect Crescent Beach" imagery that adds a touch of joy and balance to the song. I'm reminded of "Wondering Where The Lions Are" by Canadian Bruce Cockburn. Great job Neal.

Glad Tidings
This has the easy going groove that I often enjoy with your stuff, a very open sound with those acoustics and cool drums. Do you use real drums on this? NIce subtle organ work in there too. I reckon you could extend this further and have a big guitar solo in there at the end (but then I would say that hehe)
Cheers

Hi Jack :)
I'm listening to yours at the moment. I was reading Chris' (rok41) comment on your post and agree - the mixing/mastering thing is a learning process we all go through (for proof, go back to my earliest posts!).
The drums are based on a number of midi loops which I then modified pretty radically with the midi pencil tool to suit the song. I really enjoy doing the drum tracks in songs.
http://tweakheadz.com/guide.htm is a great place to learn stuff about home recording, mixing etc.
Thanks for listening!

freshness sound-wise maybe it's an omen for a good change for us all (2012 and all that) especially by the time the tide turns.... excellent lyrics as always...... and you're the one who usually decries vocal reverb/echo Neil, but I think it really adds to the vocals in a good way here; gives a very nice 'lift'.... love the percussion and instruments..... just so fresh sounding

Bang the drum
If that island were a simile for my bank account, I'd be more worried about the tide going out : )

Or, perhaps, it's the rouge wave that's got me really anxious.

The song's lyrics, like so many other ones you have written and posted, shine as analogy. That is, you have a knack for coming up with simple concepts that function as complex life metaphors.

Sometimes I think our emotions fluctuate as tides. Some days we are strong, some days weak, with a lot of in between moments occuring over the course of time (and dependent on the current political climate).

Good song!

Okay. We're all depressed!!!
But somehow you always seem to frame the situation in a way that there's hope for a better tomorrow...maybe by taking a long swim, but I don't think I am going to drown. Neil, I can't think in the musical terms you use so well, but I can appreciate a well-produced number that carries a punch with some thoughtful lyrics and excellent musicianship by "the band." It is always a pleasure to hear what's going on in your head. Not depressing in the least! Much enjoyed.

And I thought
existentialism died in the 20th century. Uh. Oops. So, without getting into politics, this song has a great island beat to it that is so far from the angst that your lyrics suggest lurks behind the surface visual of a wonderful island in the sun. You are a man with something to say, and you say it with intelligence and driving conviction...and art. Kinda fulfills everything that music should be about. Nice.
