Description
I've gone without a Friday afternoon quickie for a very, very long time.

That is, it's been a very, very long time since I sat down, wrote and recorded a song in just a matter of a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon, or any afternoon for that matter.

So, I found myself with a couple of hours free and an itchy guitar finger (possibly a fungal infection...), and I decided to crank one out right quick. Started at 4:05 p.m., finished mixing at 6:10 p.m., whipped up some art and uploaded.

This is very down, dirty and rough. Two guitar parts, bass, drum and vocals, with just a little bit of harmony thrown in. For the most part, everything was done in one pass. Mixing was done mostly with headphones, so it may not be the best. And they lyrics, well, I wrote them in less than five minutes, so not my finest hour. (And, just so you know, even though the lyrics are pretty much a downer, I'm feeling pretty good right at the moment.)

Despite any shortcomings, it was fun to just dive into a tune, starting from scratch and taking it to finish in just a couple of hours. I hope you guys enjoy the results.

Face the Rain

Em/C

Sometimes this world is out to get me
It takes more than I can ever give
It pushes me too far. Puts me on my knees
I think I’ll never get up again

Somes times this world is cold and lonely
I look around and no one’s by my side
Clouds form over head. I feel I should be dead
And I feel the rain falling again

I stand and face the rain again, looking into the sky
the water washes over me. It flows into me soul
I stand and face the rain again, to wash the world away
and I wait for the sun to return

Streetlights cut right through the darkness
Outside my window streaked with rain
Darkness fills the lonely alley
And I walk away through the midnight rain

I stand and face the rain again, looking into the sky
the water washes over me. It flows into me soul
I stand and face the rain again, t

I always love the Neil Young quality in your voice. And the gritty production punctuates that Neil vibe. Love the chorus! Tons of power. This one sounds like weeks worth of work went in.

Thanks Andrew!
One of the things I really love about so much of NY's stuff is the gritty, almost thrown together sound. And I've always thought nice, crunchy, grinding guitar was a nice offset for my high, whiney voice. :)

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking a listen.

Not my quickest
A couple of years ago I did a tune, start to finish, in under an hour. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Sometimes, putting a time limit or deadline on myself actually helps give creativity a little focus.

Thanks for taking a listen, Karen. Always appreciate your support.

U2 meets Neil Young?
Nice one Joe. I'm incredibly impressed that you can do it all in 2:05:00 - these days it takes me longer and longer to do all that. The next PBGB song will have taken nearly 5 months from go to whoa (although it is worth the wait!).
I admire your confidence in using fx - fuzz in particular. I always baulk at heavy guitar fx. Another terrific song for your collection.
Cheers from Oz!

The Long and the Short of It
If you took an average of the time it took for me to finish and post a song, I'm not sure what it would be. I've had at least one that took well over a year for me to finish up and post. I've got one I fully intend to finish one day that I've been working on, off and on, for about six years now and another one for three years.

I've always like having a lot of growl to my guitar. If nothing else, it covers up my less than stellar guitar playing. ;)

Glad you enjoyed it Neil. Thanks for dropping by!

whip it out joe
great whipped out in a afternoon tune.

i like the "on the edge" danger of this. ruff & tuff approach works really well on this with a cool sense of emergency. great catchy chorus

Whip it good...
I'm sorry, but all I can think of now is that scene from Blazing Saddles: "Excuse me while I whip this out..." :D

Appreciate it Vic. Thanks for taking a listen.

I love it that you did this in an afternoon, you have kept the raw edge which makes this tune and gives it that "live" feel. Great job, great song
jgurner said 1926 days ago (January 14th, 2012)
Thanks Neil
Another good thing about doing it quick is pretty much doing everything in one shot (Maybe two on a couple of parts). That helps with a kind of a "live" feel as well.

Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for dropping in.

Wow!!!
Is it fair for me to say this one is your best one thus far? Probably not. I am still going to say it: "Wow!" This is awesome Joe, from lyrics to arrangement, to performance and mix. Vocals is a killer, especially on the chorus (read 1968) and the solo/end is fitting very well...
I am happy I'd check into this one of yours, always liked what you did, but this is bringing it up a few notches in my book; it has so much in it... Peace Bro/Mikki

Mikki!
Thanks my brother! Always great to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed this one. My guitar finger is still itching a little bit so there may be some more coming down the pipe. We shall see.

Hope all's going well for you up there in the big city. Might have to work my way up there one day for a visit.

Plenty of crazy
But it's probably just the cow the guy who lives behind me owns, not necessarily a horse. Gotta love living in a small Southern town...

Crazy Horse called. They want their vibe back.
Yes, this has got echoes of Neil Young. That guitar that never quite manages to stop distorting being one...and then the lead tone with the reverb wash that goes on for days being another...

And yes, okay, the vocal...

Tell ya, Joe, I totally get the coolness of the record and mix it in two hours thing, AND, now that you've done THAT, there COULD be another version that's just a little bit more produced, just 'cause this seems like a song that might deserve and appreciate that....

Good one, in any case...
jgurner said 1925 days ago (January 15th, 2012)
Hey Ed!
Glad you liked it!

Going back and relistening, I definitely think it could be worked on a bit without losing its edge. May do that some day. If nothing else, it would benefit from doing more than more than one pass each on the vocals. we'll see.

Thanks for taking a listen. Always appreciate it.

Cool imagery in the lyric. Gritty rhythm and spacey soaring lead guitar work well together. The drums sound very realistic. I agree with the Neil Young references.

Everything that Ed said, almost...
I happen to like it all jagged 'round the edges and i like things produced, but i'm diggn' the rawness of this Mr. jG! yer sounding quite relaxed in the Vox dept. and as well you should be. Diggn the Vibe and everything. it's kinda how i'm feeling these days, but it's where i wanna be. thanks for the sing' along version of my momentary scene, Sir.
