Darkness Descends

Description
Who is my enemy? This is my answer in a slow, minor blues in 6/8 time.

Credits: I am on guitar, bass, and organ (midi). I wrote the very primitive drum loop. My daughter Mary is the singer. The guitar and bass were recorded direct to GB through a PreSonus AudioBox. I used the built in amps and effects to tweak the sound. We used a Shure SM57 for the vocals.

Lyrics
An evil wind is blowing
Black clouds are rolling in
There's a rumble in the distance
That's callin' out my name

Mmmm...There is no way to win
The darkness is descending
Will I ever see the sun again?

There's no use in running
There's just no place to hide
The evil that surrounds you
Is the evil from inside

Mmmm...There is no way to win
The darkness is descending
Will I ever see the sun again?

Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh
this is so sweet and sultry it's just dripping with goodness. I know that's ironic for a blues which is supposed to drip with sadness but there ya go. I hear a bit of Harvey Mandell in there, which I like. And I'm disappointed that I couldn't download. Guess I'll just have to come back if I want to hear it again, which I will. Is that you singing?

Richard13, thanks!
This was my first posting to macjams...a message in a bottle sort of thing. I just threw it out to sea, hoping it would land on someone's little island. I am glad you found it and liked it. I changed the configuration of the song, so it can be downloaded now.

No, I am not the singer.

Thanks for making the download available: I've taken a copy.
I assumed you weren't the vocalist, but who is? Shouldn't she get a credit?

Thanks for stopping by to listen. Yes, I was definitely channeling Stevie Ray's ``Tin Pan Alley'' and Pink Floyd at the same time.

Darkness descends
Great sustain on the opening guitar. Organ gives it something to sit on. Minimalist drums and bass are all that's needed. Beautiful voice which has warmth and plaintiveness - got me in. The guitar solo is simple but highly effective- moody, soulful. Much enjoyed!

Thank you for listening. My daughter is the singer. We recorded this much too quickly and (I think) with too much input gain, but it is what it is :-)

brilliant darkness
crystal clear recording. The light tremolo on the high guitar seemed odd at first, but soon became just fine. The female vox too, seemed ever so slightly "dry" at first, but I quickly came to like them up front like that. Wonderful take-it-slow blues tune, excellent singing... please pass on kudos to the anonyfemme, and great music like this is a great way to battle the inner darkness. Welcome to Macjams!

Yes, the tremolo on the guitar is a strange choice for a traditional blues, but I think I spent too much time with Pink Floyd earlier in my life, and it didn't seem so odd in the end.

Who is my enemy?
With that sound you should get rid off any enemies that you might have. Deep, personal and blue as a blues can be. Looking forward to hear more from you.

Very tasty vibe and really wonderful singing. The sustained organ really builds up tension. Got the just right guitar tone. Any more laid back and we'd be fallin' over!

Thanks for the comments. I've been listening to Deckhand Blues. Having grown up in Wisconsin on Lake Michigan, I have a real appreciation for the setting of that song. I'm glad you came over to here some blues.

Thank you for our kind comments. I had tried different approaches to the guitar solo (overdriven, more up front, etc) but somehow I settled, for better or worse, on what you hear in the posting.

Beautiful vocal. Understated guitar is tasty and in the pocket. The lyric makes a good point and it's true for a lot of us.

Thanks for the comments. My daughter is the singer, so I can only take credit for getting her to spend a few minutes tracking a vocal part for me. As for the other instrumentation, I was definitely trying to let the voice be the main instrument and I wanted everything else in support, hopefully doing something interesting, but not taking center stage.

Jeez ... I'm hearing some cool blues today. This minor blues is smooth and sweet. That touch of organ washes nicely behind your fine guitar tone... understated and played with feel. Credit for the vocals? ... nice man!...

I am glad that happened upon this song. I put the organ part in there to give some continuous connection to the underlying chords. I made it sit way in the back and kept it very simple (which is all I can do on a keyboard anyway!).

Blues
Is hard to manufacture. It has to come from an emotion and from deep inside, like your lyrics say about evil. You nailed it. From the very forceful but smooth vocals to the guitar work, you nailed it. Your daughter has a great voice, and I love the guitar chords in the blues progression, especially the last two in the progression. Someone mentioned Harvey Mandell, I can hear that in your chord structures. Great job, to the both of you. Hope you post more.

Feeling this....
Killer tone. Excellent performance. Vocal work is spot on. Maybe a tad of reverb....but that's just me. Make no mistake, this is as good as is gets. Nice job, folks.

I missed your initial MJ post but I am so happy to look back and hear this gem. Slow blues is hard to beat IMHO and you and Mary just hit the sweet spot. The lead tone and organ sound so good together and your daughter has a very fine voice. Fantastic MJ debut. Kind regards, Peter.
