Today is a Good Day to Die

Description
My birthday is right around the Holidays and so every year at this time I'm extra reflective, another year off the calendar and another year lived, and I've just been thinking lately that this is a magical old world, ain't it? Yesterday, for example, I drove through a rainbow. Just right through it, colors all around me shining in the haze. I felt like a leprechaun. There's that kind of thing going on all the time. You have to train yourself to see it, because our minds are too busy to notice otherwise. You have to say to yourself, 'self, pay attention today, because this might be the day luck runs out'. The Plains Indians used to say 'today is a good day to die'. That didn't mean that they didn't value their lives - just the opposite - it meant that they were so cool with the life they had lived right up until that point that if today was the day it ended, OK. That's how I feel, I feel like even with my provincial little existence I've seen, I've NOTICED, magic beyond any power I have to describe it, that I've been ten times lucky, and when it comes time to find those last memories I'll have to beg off more time to choose which good thing I'll die holding. That's what this tune is about.

Musically, I don't know what the hell this is. Kind of space dub, funk, disco, Collective Indie, R&B, whatever. I wanted a spiritual vibe, lots of space, but also lots of moving parts, like life...everything moving within it's own sphere.

Lyrics
You're washing dishes to Yo MTV Raps
I Need Love comes around
and you're shaking your ass
Fly dancing LL while you're drying a glass
and I'm stuffing your back pockets with my snack machine cash

and someday when i'm drawing my last breath
i'll think about that and laugh myself to death

It's the little things that lift me
Above the big things trying to bring me down

She's staring at me in her pink pull up drawers
We're still lying in bed
She just banged in through the door
She smiles as I lean down and lift her up off the floor
drop her down in between us
and close my eyes for five more

and someday when my body's at it's end
i'll think about that and I'll whistle around the bend

It's the little things that lift me
Above the big things trying to bring me down

A real toe-tapper but today's not convenient; tomorrow might be better for me. Meantime I'll just play this again. Cheers.

lyrics
it's funny there aren't many words but I worked on them for a long while trying to get it just right. it's the kind of thing that could be easily cheesy with just one wrong word, and i wanted it to be honest and real. i don't think i've heard this Kim Jong Girl...I'll have to check it out. Does she wear go-go boots and carry an AK? Because I dig those chicks.

Nice tribute to lavalamp ---

Dig the bassy lead on this one. Beck-ish indeed.

You certainly displayed your talent on this track.

Very cool!

No doubt. Nothing like a semi hollow body for a noisy, bassy lead. Glad you liked it man, I've got to head over to LL land to see what you've been posting. I've been away for a month and it feels like a year.

Die Day
I'm playing this through the speakers on my iMac and it is killing it. The separation is excellent and the EQ is totally wide and perf. What a funky cool song. I'm a sucker for a flange blistering lead solo. Trippy and boppin along with it. The bass progression is awesome.
Thx!

P.S. there is 24 seconds of silence at the end of the song...?

Big Sound For Sure
Lyrical magic. I live in La where the views are to die for. Because I am not from here I tend to appreciate the little things a lot more than my wife who has been here most of her life. LA'ers take a lot for granted whereas the rest of the country dies to get here. Yeah my man speak up and speak out. I'm digging this oh so much. Musical Composition Supreme!

"Musically, I don't know what the hell this is." I think that sums this up musically and content wise as well, when things like that happen we dont know what happened we just know its significant,,like your present contribution.

well said. must be the old celt in me, but i like to imagine a bit of portent around most everything. example, two days ago, I saw a bald eagle dive into the Shenandoah after a fish, just outrageously pretty, and then ten minutes later I found a rabbit that had got itself caught up in the fence and froze to death, not a mark on him. Totally unrelated things but I had a kind of buzz all day.

I always like your vocals and this track has a rockin' good groove to it ... yet it's funky and soulful. Cool guitar work and a solid drivin' bass. Lots of layered sounds but it's all quite clear in the mix. Creative piece and an interesting concept. Enjoyed.

Perspective...
That's a cool mindset - never thought of it like that.

I know what you mean about the rainbow. It's like being in Odessa TX where there's not much going on and little to see in the daytime but tumbleweeds and flat desert, but at night, OMG! what a sky!

Cool tune.

Odessa TX
Odessa. The big little stock tank. But without Odessa there'd be no Friday Night Lights, and as FNL fans my wife and I thank your ancestors for whatever strange inspiration caused them to stay after watering the cows. You're right about the sky - i'm most familiar with panhandle TX, where my wife's ancestors decided to stay after watering the cows, but I think the sky is pretty much the same, and it's incredible. Interesting sky during the day too, at times, especially when it rains far off. Thanks for the listen, glad you like the song...

Didn't have to use your AK
I'm way in to the bass and way in to the lyrics. The bass is played by a black guy with a bass up to his neck and the lyrics are a modern equivalent to a Norman Rockwell painting. Those perfect moments that you never plan for, don't cost a dime, but will represent "perfection" for the rest of your life. The production is great on this. A very clear, clean sound. Like listening in 3-D. Well done.

Bass up to his neck
LOL that's the way I play guitar. I like that 60's short strap. I don't know how those metal dudes play with the guitar around their knees.

Normal Rockwell, that's a cool analogy man. He constantly had to walk the line between cheese and kitsch and honesty. Cause the truth is that we humans are honestly cheesy and prone to kitsch. ha. dangerous ground for a 'serious' artist. I worked those lyrics over for a couple weeks before I was satisfied with the tone. Helps that they were true. Glad you liked it hoss, thanks for taking time from your busy pants dropping schedule to stop by.

laugh yourself to death
You have this way about your music that reflects the pop attitude but in its own way could never really be pop, the handclaps and the synth in the back really make it for me
The lyrics are very reflective I think if your last thoughts are about all the little things then you might die feeling complete,
Dont know what Im saying

I like the arrangement, especially the way the guitar and the percussion doo dads complement one another. Cool lead break. I can appreciate the sentiment behind the song, but I'm thinking maybe I should appreciate it a little more.

percussion doo dads
that's a great way to explain my approach to percussion, i'm going to use that in the future. glad you liked the break, my first thought was that it wasn't complicated enough but then it stuck in my head the way it was and i figured if it's catchy, it's good.

one thing I really try to be good at is phrasing. i think that's the difference between a singer and someone who sings, regardless of how 'good' the voice is. glad you liked the song and thanks for giving it a listen.

thanks, that's a really nice comment about the experiences. I spent a lot of my life as a dumbass. Now i'm trying to appreciate what I have on a moment to moment basis. recording all of these little experiences in songs is a way to train myself to notice and value the every day.

i'm in awe of your Deckhand Blues song. it's really fantastic. as good as anything lightfoot or taylor or shoot even ian tyson has ever written. i like it an awful lot.

an auspicious beginning for Tempie 2012. An excellent theme song for the Mayan Apocalypse now that I think of it...
I really like the shades of light and dark in the lyrics and music.
cool drum and bass sounds too. and a lot of soul in the guitar solo.
Way more cool touches than you can shake a stick at. As usual I'm impressed. applause!

man, right out of the gate with the $2300 words. mayan apocalypse lol, you're right. just think, the plains indians have been living post apocalypse for 100 years. so it can be done. lots of 'cool touches' but i'm tired of cool. next tune is going to be drums, bass, guitar.

A good day
Great tune - I keep hearing bits of this and that where I think "oh ya, that reminds me of" and then its onto the next inspired part. Nice that it doesn't fit any preconceived genre.

Well put together in all dimensions and a fine listen.

Thanks!

Space dub :)
Another excellent track Craig, although it's quite a way outside what I expected. This is probably perfect for the "Pop (alternative)" label - it's pop for sure (you do great pop!) but it's certainly not yer average top 40 song. I like the way this is mixed a lot - I imagine it will take a number of listens before I hear everything that's going on.
Very cool post!
