Lyrics
THE LIVING AND THE DEAD
©2012 Ray Kainz

Can I Entertain
When I'm singing 'bout the rain
& the veil that's drawn concealing all the light
Can I make you high
While I question who and why
& how the days are growing shorter than the night

Can I make you smile
after saying all the while
the game is rigged the tables turned

Can I make you dance
while captive in a digital trance
that attracts you and distracts form all that's abandoned and burned

Just remember
The sun sets on the living and the dead
In December
snowflakes fall on everybody's head
So don't slumber
or you'll swallow everything your fed

could this be the end?
Can I freak you out
while ignorance flows with intellectual drought
logic and love are tossed aside
just to be right

Can I make you laugh
with territories trampled by the golden calf
for the flock with freely feed the hand that bites

Just remember
the sun sets on the living and the dead
In December
snowflakes fall on everybody's head
so don't slumber
or you'll swallow everything your fed

this can't be the end...

Just remember
the sun sets on the living and the dead
In December
snowflakes fall on everybody's head
so don't slumber
or you'll swallow everything your fed

Just promise me
that before it all ends we're gonna
Let Love find us
Let Love mend

I think
I like it! I like all the space in the mix and the subtle instrumentation. Nicely structured song with some cool chord changes - could be a missing Beatles song. Melody and lyrics work for me too. Not wishing to sound sycophantic, this is simply a very good post - love the "chook scratching" guitar - fantastic light and shade. If I had to state a nit (and it would be via a blowtorch to the soles of my feet!) I reckon for a pop song, its probably a minute or so too long.
Did I mention I like it?
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

the living and dead
hey ray - very excited to see a new post from you. this has a very xtc feel to it. i'm not sure about the chord progressions - you've got a lot of key changes that are difficult for my tiny brain to process. i really liked the trademark electric guitar solo picking. yeah....agree with PBGB....too long outro. very nice last line.

Let's turn off Fox News and just make love instead
Love to hear your stuff. Thanks for sharing your latest. You have a signature sound that opens the song, with your lifting baseline and opening chord voicing. Just that made me smile. Your vocals interpret the song like a simple boy-meets-girl love song, yet it's really a cultural critique song that, in essence, says "Let's turn off Fox News and just make love instead" which also made me smile. The line "So don't slumber or you'll swallow everything your fed - could this be the end?" was the topping point for me, when I truly started liking the song.

Anding chorus is really fine. Great pop chorus, great finish. Very enjoyable tune with a message snuck in there under the radar. Not easy to do.

Living
I love the changes and quirky melody. Quality production with bass, drums and guitar thick and full, acoustics and percussion spread. Interesting lyrics, too. All in all, an excellent slice of power pop songwriting and performance.

Classic pop
Quality song, Ray. Classic pop vocals/harmonies and a very catchy hook chorus. Like the guitar work and the pro level mix. Yep, a keeper! Take care, Peter.

Great performance...
...of quite a complex piece. I agree with Julian about the array of harmonic changes that would give most guitarists a moment to pause and wonder "how does he do that?" Very clear recording and I very much appreciate your bring your vocal way out front of the band, though how you do that exactly and still keep the band so hot is a mystery to me. Well-written and well-performed.
