Description
This song was conceived whilst I was on holidays in January and it has proved to be a problematic child. I had the concept in my head but I struggled to get it down "on tape". I knew I wanted slide guitar in the song. Unfortunately, I have little skill in this area - but I had a go anyway :-)

The song is meant to have a homegrown, swampy, "organic" feel.

Anyway, see what you make of it, and as always any comments and constructive criticism are welcome.

Peter :-)

P.S Thanks to Philip 18 for having a critical listen and helping me out.

Lyrics
Alright Tonight – Peter Bowen (2012)

Full moon is glistening its cold light through the trees
Vitus shadows dancing hard on the breeze
Campfire’s dying, just some embers aglow
My guitar’s picking out a tune soft and low

But I feel alright
Yes, I feel alright tonight
You know, I feel alright
Everything’s gonna turn out right

Staring deep into the heart of the fire
Filled my soul with a burning desire
I got to thinking ‘bout the things that ring true
And all my thoughts kept turning to you

You know I feel alright
Yes I feel alright tonight
Yes I feel alright
Everything’s gonna be alright

Come the morning I’ll be heading straight back to your arms
Come the evening I’ll be tasting the delights of your charms

You know I feel alright
Yes I feel alright tonight
Yeah I feel alright
You’ll be in my dreams tonight

Come the morning I’ll be rolling on back to your arms
Come the evening I’ll be tasting the delights of your charms…

warm
Peter - love the guitar tone here. Very warm and cozy. Sound just like the picture looks. Love the harmony and when the electric (or is it a synth?) comes in. Lyrics really put you around that fire.

Warm :-)
Thanks for coming across for a listen ESRG. I think I have got better at recording acoustic guitars in the last year. They do have such a fantastic, warm sound. The slide guitar that comes in is my G&L ASAT. I appreciate your kind works. Take care, Peter.

Alright tonight
I do like this song! Good lyrics, good structure, good tune. The guitars sound great, from the crisp acoustic to the swampy, fuzzy slide. You build it up well and vocal has the urgency the lyrics require. Excellent work!

Inspiration
Thanks Philip. Your recent ventures into slide inspired me to have a go. I could probably have spent many more weeks fiddling with this but it was occupying too much of my time so I just decided to post and be dammed. Talk soon, Peter.

Alright!
Peter, you did some very excellent work on this--on of your best songs, I'm quite sure(melody and lyrics accentuate one another very nicely here). I liked how the verse just swept in there after the contemplative intro--quite dramatic! As expected, the performance and production on this was perfect for the mood and coloring (I kind of heard this has a "green/brown" song--I kind of compare music to colors and this had an earthiness to it (brown) but a cool wave of fresh air about it too (green). Loved the delicate harmonization (great touches there on the high notes leading out to the break). It's picayune and it's very hard to make any suggestion about this, but I'm thinking (at least how it sounds on my end) that the lead vocal needs just a little more air around it--just a bit, but again, this is just my perception and I don't have the greatest speakers either so will be interesting if others suggest this. Kudos to you on an extremely great job here! Michael (PS: never say I don't write lengthy reviews!)

Thoughtful...
Thanks for the thoughtful and supportive review, Michael. You give freely of your time, as always, and I really appreciate your input. I will have a play with the reverb of the lead vocals and see what I can come up with. Lengthy is just fine :-) Take care, Peter.

The slippery slide :-)
Hi Freddy. Been a while since I posted a vocal song. Glad you liked it. I haven't ever been "taught" to play slide so I don't really feel confident with it. Love the sound, though. The bongo sound came from a set of small bongos I got given for Christmas. (6"/5"), hence the higher pitch than normal. Hope things are well. Take care, Peter.

"I got to thinking ‘bout the things that ring true"
Guitar opens to lyrical poetry my man..Digging this real heartfelt piece. I know you are poring your heart out here. How can you not feel the fire the harmony alone kicked by your guitar magic is speaking volumes. The fact that you consulted on this tells me how seriously dedicated and focused you were on this gem.

Like this rootsy outing alot. Really comes alive at 1:36 when second acoustic comes in strong. Harmonies, slide and acoustic lead are all strong. Nicely written, performed and mixed.

Rootsy...
Rootsy is a good description, John. That's what I had in mind when I first developed the main acoustic riff. I knew slide would work in well. The worrying issue was whether I could actually play slide and do it some justice. Glad you thought it turned out OK. Regards from the land down under, Peter.

You were definitely feeling alright
when you wrote this, and still feeling alright when you recorded it. Everything sounds wonderful: your problematic child grew up more than 'alright'. And the slide sounds great: it's often a great idea to challenge our own abilities and see what we're made of ;-)

More than alright
Inspired use of the slide guitar Peter. Not that the rest of the guitar work is any less - this overall hangs together well, crowned by your close harmonies. The tambourine harkens back to 60s influences. Very nicely done!

my
latest has me trying my hand at slide as well. do you know jim bryson. that would be my model for the sound i was looking for. yours has a southern feel along with a bit of cat stevens. if i were to give constructive criticism it would be that you get a little picky at the end of phrases. i would be very aware of the melody and end tones. i think the playing is right on and the production is very profesional. thanks

Hi Tim. Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I did struggle with the end notes of some of the lines. I tried to hide it with the harmony :-) I needed to keep singing the lines til I got them pitch perfect. I appreciate the constructive feedback. Liked your latest a lot. Perhaps there might be some more slide in future offerings. Take care, Peter.

Very Nice Song!
I like this song a lot; enjoyed the guitar at the beginning, and like the overall structure, and the lyrics too...The one thing that jumped out at me was I got in one sort of mood because of the guitar intro, and then when the vocals start it takes on an entirely different character...I'd like to hear the entire song done in the slower, more intimate tone that the intro has...Great song either way though! Lori :-)
