Shiny Things

Description
This started off with a quote Peter had at the bottom of his emails for a while: "All things are not shining, and all the shining things are."

We’ve known each other since we started primary school together many years ago and have worked in a few bands together over the years. So when I was around at his place one day we started thinking it would be a good idea if we wrote some more songs together. I thought the quote above was a good place to start. There it sat for a while, until inspiration struck and Peter came up with a set of words. I put some chords to them and recorded the first (of several) vocal tracks.

It has taken a while to get it to where we’re both happy with the mix, but here it is! We hope you enjoy it.

Peter Thorneycroft: lyrics (and a few suggestions re the music), harmony vocals, harmonica and synthesiser.
Philip Gardner: music (and a few suggestions re the words), lead vocal, guitars and bass.

Lyrics
Shiny Things
Words & Music by Peter Thorneycroft & Philip Gardner

When you look into a garden, you see flowers or the weeds
What it is that you perceive, depends upon your needs
If you want the seed to grow, then plant it in the ground
Nurture it with love and watch the bud that comes around

And when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land

Look behind a dark cloud, there’s an open sky of blue
The hail and rain starts falling, then it clears the way for you
The night becomes the morning, again the sun will rise
Rainbow warmth above you, you can ease your worried mind

So when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land

Instrumental (verse x 2)

The mighty river ebbs and flows, and soft conquers the hard
The path of least resistance, will leave the rocks with scars
When you look at your reflection, there are diamonds deep within
Just go beneath the surface, and you’ll find where to begin

Walkin’ the tightrope, walkin’ the talk, walkin the plank or walkin’ on air
We make our path by walkin’, and the winning walk is here

So when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land

Yeah when you see the chances
As you travel through the land
Reach out for the shiny things
And take them with both hands

Nice work Phil.
Only nit I have would be EQ. The low mids of the guitar seem to cover up your vocals in places. If the EQ was worked a little it might help keep that vocal on top a little. Great picturesque lyrics. Much enjoyed.

Hi there, Freddy! Glad you enjoyed the song - Peter will like the comment on the lyrics, too. Re the EQ, I'm sure you're right, but every time I fiddle with EQing things I usually end up with something worse than I started with and I go back to the original. I think with me a lot of the secret is to get the input levels right - after that I need a few lessons from a master mixer like yourself! Hope all is well with you and yours. Cheers. Philip.

Beautiful and relaxed
Your harmonies are great.
Great relaxed feel. Sounds like you guys are jamming along and having the time of your lives. That's how music should sound and feel.

Excellent collab!

First off, I love the song. The fingerpicked acoustics are wonderful. Tone to die for. There's a wonderful Jim Croce vibe in this. Great arrangement. Love the harmony vocals and harmonica. Thanks for the download!

Thanks for the comments on the guitar tone, Andrew - which of course started when I listened to some of your songs and wondered howe you got that beautifully clean tone. A "Black Friday" Apple Australia sale which included a Blue Yeti was the next step! I also appreciate the Jim Croce comparison - he's a favourite of mine! Peter will be pleased with your comment on the harmony and the harmonica! Once again, thanks for your support!

I really do like this style of music ... it feels so real and reminiscent of summer days at past folk festivals sitting on the grass listening to some fine tunes ,,, ok, enough nostalgia. You guys work well together. Nice picking, fluid vocals and Peter did an awesome harmonica part!!!
Excellent performance, very enjoyable and visual lyrics.
Cheers

Hi Stan, good to hear from you! My memories of folk music are a bit more of sitting in crowded and smoky coffee lounges rather than at a festival - I think you got the better deal there! Thanks for the positive comments - Peter will be especially delighted with your assessment of his harmonica work! Cheers. Philip

Really like this...
Really like this, Philip. Feel good song that rolls along oh so nicely. The guitars sound great and Pete's harmonica adds just the right touch. Your vocal work is warm and inviting and the harmonies work very well. Great post. You are really getting the hang of this. Talk soon, Peter.

Low bass guitar...
...that's what I first noticed about this beautiful little song: so mellow and engaging...makes the higher guitar shimmer above something substantial... Oh, I like that harmonica...and the solo guitar line, too. Now throw some strings behind the whole mix and your whole arrangement will just open up like a wide-open field. I like the quality of your vocal, too, but wish it were more up-front in your mix. It should be the dominant think in your recording of this beautiful song. ... This is so peaceful. Made me feel good to hear it.

I appreciate the close listening, Paul - I think you might have a job as "friendly advisor" for the next one we do :-) I think I sometimes get carried away by the sound of the guitars and forget what the main focus is, so the vocal can get be a bit further back than it should be. Next time... I'm delighted you enjoyed the song - thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Really nice, folksy tune. Great playing all around - nice rich tone on the acoustic guitar. I would agree with a few other mj'ers that your vox are competing a little for sonic space with the guitar, but certainly not a big deal. Totally enjoyed this - thanks!

Really, Really....
This reminds me of John Denver for some reason....The lyrics are
outstanding, positive truths a very good seed to set forth, nice
harmonics in the over all sound, your voice fits the chord pattern
like a glove...
A safe place for you, because you do it well your accent only shows
up in spots.... as if that matters at all..... It's the content that matters....

And this has plenty, well done My Man..... Peter as well......

PEACE......

philip this is beautiful. you and peter sound so good together. i love the mix and the two guitar tracks panned out to different sides. peter's harmonica is exquisite and your laid back vocal style is soothing and hypnotic. wasn't too sure about the synth when it drifted in as it diluted what i was already listening to, but it soon pulled me in. really fantastic mix and it was pleasing to hear more harmonica at the end. what - no vocal harmonies? next time please :)

I appreciate very much your detailed comments, Julian. Re the harmonies, Peter and I talked about that and decided just to go with harmony on the chorus section - we thought less is more for the most part. I get mixed reviews when I put in harmony - some like the richer sound, sound think it clutters things. Best I try a duet with myself one day and see how that is received! Thanks again for the good review!
