Description
A folk song of Barbara Allen ilk that I tried to record as if "we" were playing in a coffee shop style situation.

The lead singer/guitarist (me) is accompanied by a second harmony singer/guitarist (me...).

Purposely meant to have a "live" feel - even though they both die in the end :-)

See what you think.

All comments and constructive criticisms welcome.

Peter :-)

Lyrics
By still waters – Peter Bowen (2012)

Fragile shadows drift across my mind
I try so hard to make them stay
The jigsaw puzzle that you’ve left behind
Has too many pieces gone astray
For it to see the light of day

My eyes are heavy but I just can’t sleep
I can’t believe you’ve gone away
You were taken down into the deep
Now my life’s in disarray
And I can’t face another day

By still waters, we were lying
Our pleasure could not be contained
With the gods we both were flying
Till cruel fate pulled us back again
And by still waters you remain

We were safe in our contentment
Asleep within each other’s arms
I sensed you stir and slide away from me
But there was no cause for alarm
I felt you’d never come to harm

I watched you walk down to the waterside
Your body glistening in the rain
You stroked out gently for the other side
I’d never taste your love again
That lake your beauty, did retain

By still waters, we were lying
Our pleasure could not be contained
With the gods we both were flying
Till cruel fate pulled us back again
And by still waters you remain

By still waters, I am crying
The memories cause me too much pain
I can feel the water rising
But now I’m back with you again
And by still waters we’ll remain

First!
Beautiful crisp tone on the guitar. I like the entry of the second guitar. Harmony fills things out nicely. Did you do all the bits independently, or a couple at a time? I like the light and shade from taking the second guitar out, too. Lovely ringing solo. All very warm. Good story in the lyrics. Nice photo to go with it - one of yours? Excellent work!

Just a few takes :-)
Thanks, Philip. Yes, the second guitar/person does make it more interesting. I worked out the harmony in phrases but then recorded it singing all the way through (took a few takes :-)). The guitars and lead vocal were recorded in entire takes as well. The photo I just grabbed off the net. Talk soon, Peter.

Guitar is super!
The first thing I noticed about this recording/song is just how clear the guitar work is, very sure and mixed beautifully into the whole arrangement. The tune is pleasant as you tell your story, providing a melody that has plenty of interest and that certainly wouldn't get tiresome on numerous listenings. Your voice is clear, too, and very pleasant. I think you have achieved the "live" feel you were looking for...2nd guitar sometimes isn't quite in sync, but that's a minor distraction. I hear a small string ensemble behind this as the number moves along. Could be a possibility to expand your arrangement and give just a touch more interest to the accompaniment as the song progresses. I really like this song and the very clear recording of it that you've done...I hope you get a hundred comments. You surely deserve them. One of the most pleasant songs I have heard here.
Peace.

Supportive
Hi Paul. Thanks for the kudos re the guitar playing and mix. I was happy with how it turned out. The "live" feel necessitated some timing glitches :-) I recorded all parts in entire takes. I agree with you re some orchestration but I committed myself to the coffee shop feel on this one and, with the money they pay at those gigs, I couldn't quite justify the string quartet :-) If you ever felt the inclination to add some orchestration and/or piano to it, I would be honoured. I appreciate you kind, supportive comments. Take care, Peter.

That
guitar is beautifully played.
The guitar has awesome tone and the recording catures that very well.

Cool vocals. I like the harmonizing parts a lot.

Great song. Very well done.
I think that you did a very professional job on this one. Any critique from me would just be a nit pick.

Pretty solid IMO.

Harmonies...
Thanks for your kinds words, Mike. Glad you liked the guitars. I was quite happy with how I captured them. The harmonies were interesting. When I first worked them out and sang them, I thought they were pretty ordinary but when I finally got the mix and balance right they worked out better than I thought. Take care, Peter.

Hi Kenta. Glad that the song had an emotional impact on you. It is essentially a traditional folk style song that seemed to work out OK on a number of levels. Thanks for dropping by, Peter.

This borders on traditional standard. Feels sort of old school campfire malarky! Really like the way guitars and vocals compliment each other nice one!

Hi Neil. I agree with the "standard" tag. I conceived it in that light. Hopefully people will be singing it round campfires in 100 years time :-) I appreciate your support, as always. Take care, Peter.

Hi Peter!
Enjoyed this very much. Endorse all the previous comments regarding quality of recording and arrangement of guitar accompaniment.

There is something deeply affirmative and warm about this song; there is little sense of genuine bereavement or acute and manifest sorrow in the sound for me. Just as well. There is enough of that in the world.

The line 'By still waters we'll remain' reflects this essential positivity and peace at the end.

Very nice song, Peter. Well done.

Much enjoyed.

Homage
Hi Marc. Thanks for the kind and thoughtful comments. I was listening to a song a month or so ago and it contained the phrase, "by still waters". I thought I could do something with the line and it ended up as this homage to a traditional folk song. It does have a certain warmth, despite the two deaths :-) Take care, Peter.

Thanks for the kudos re the guitar work, KC. I'm glad people seem to think the harmonies are OK. I wasn't sure about them. I did try and get a bit of a sense of space in the mix around the two of "us" :-) Take care, Peter.

Hi Andrew. I'm glad the, purposely sparse, attempted "live" feel of this song held your interest and sounded OK. As Paul stated above, I can readily hear welling strings, etc. adding nicely to this but I wanted to see how a simple arrangement was received. Thanks, Peter.

I don't know the Barbara Allen song
but what kept crossing my mind was M*A*S*H, I think it is the style and nature of the guitars...crisp and clear as is the vocal,so nicely done and well recorded.

Really nice song and lyrics are spot on on....and you got the feel of the sound you were after as well....so all targets hit ....standby to reload and fire again....

Gentle, but...
Hi Chris. Yes, it does have a descending run in a similar style to the M.A.S.H. theme. It is probably similarly gentle in nature as well (even thought the lyrics in both cases are somewhat at odds with that). Thanks for your continuing support. I have reloaded... Peter.

sorry i got here late peter. i was singing a harmony line through the verse and then the other you joined in for the chorus. it was like simon and garfunkel....plus one. you managed to make a simple construction and delivery interesting and captivating. much of that credit goes to the lyrics. guitars sound clean and clear.....and did you chop up the vocal at all - it sounds like it was one take. impressive.

Plus one... perhaps?
Hi Julian. You have always encouraged me to add harmony to my songs and I have tried to include it when I can think of something that sounds vaguely musical :-) Yes, all the tracks were single takes, guitars and vocals. I have been trying to do that recently to give my songs some continuity and a bit of a live feel. Did the same on "Alright Tonight" (a couple of posts back). It means there are a few minor timing glitches, etc. but I can live with them. I have a new song that I have written that could do with some hb harmonies...interested? I will PM you when I record the basic structure and you can see what you think. Thanks, Peter.
