Description
No. 53 from my collection By The Numbers. I may have used the title Short Story some time ago for another piece. Can't remember. This number is sort of episodic and one could easily dream up a number of scenes as the main character walks through them — perhaps a stroll in the park, into a dark neighborhood, back into the sunlight, etc. The cool thing about such musical excursions is that the listener can dream up just about anything he or she wants. I hope you enjoy YOUR story.

If you are interested in seeing or playing the piano score, it can be found here:

Short Story
I just love the part(s) when the strings come in, and later the oboe... So lush, really opens up the sonic spectrum. As always, I am impressed by the way you interweave familiar chord progressions with occasionally unexpected ones... keeps the listener from becoming complacent, which is a good thing! I suppose I like this because it is something I aim for in my own music...

Just lovely, sweet, beautiful, etc., and masterfully constructed. Well done!

Fortunately,
4:30 is NOT a short story, though I suppose compared to SOME classical pieces it is. The artwork, on the other hand, depicts a REALLY short story. The music, as usual, is beautiful. Thank you Paul.

Music to create with.
This piece my friend puts me in a place of creativity. An ability to manifest the memories and excitement of life exist here. I love to read and this is absolutely marvelous for that and just plain relaxing. You are a master of melody my man. Fantastic Composition, Beautifully played so soothing and mellow!

The rest of the Story
I am busily dreaming up plots to go along with this composition. Melody takes you places and now I will be waiting for the next number to imagine the rest of the story.

A compelling mixture
of light and menacing tones.

After the first couple of marked departures into the dark, was nervously awaiting the next chill chord, despite the beautiful overlay of sweet tones that characterise the majority of this excellent piece.

There is sadness in it too, and seems to me to represent life itself in its manifold moods.

i always feel a bit immature when i listen to complex, symphonic mood music; i don't know quite what it all means in the end!

Beautiful and elegant, all the same.

Thank you,

Marc

The orchestral bits...
...sound better than they used to, I think. I have always thought that your recorded piano sound was really deep and rich, and have sometimes been disappointed by accompanying sounds as seeming less real. On this occasion I think that, whatever you're doing, the total effect of the recorded sound is realer.

As Clark points out, one of the hallmarks of your pieces, Paul, is that you are very good indeed at blending the expected with the unexpected in a way that does not let the listener down but rather expands the listener's sense of musical possibility.

Okay,
I'm on the lake shore, sitting on a dock and dangling my feet in the warm water. It is sunny and birds are singing. In a little while, my love will come to sit down beside me. He'll take my hand in his. When I look into his face, he smiles. This would be heaven. Thanks.

Lush and inviting
Hi Paul. Been away for several days down the beach. Catching up. I like the way the sparse opening blossoms at around the 1 minute mark and the strings come in. Definitely a pastoral type feel to me. Lush and inviting as always. Thanks, Peter.

oh my
This was unexpected. The little intro led me to believe this piece was going to be something very different than what it is. And what it is is just lovely. Really excellent progressions that help to move the piece forward. You have some very nice interplay between right and left hand here, always keeping the listener engaged. And beautiful orchestration. Just wonderful.

Full of charm, innocence and sunbeams through the woods
Lovely progressions here Paul (1:05 and other places where you take us where we don't expect to harmonically go), with each segment standing as its own emotional context. Your touch on the keyboard is like a gentle hand on a child's head. There is also a warmth here that is comforting, since even if the tension rises we know we are in safe hands of an almost wistful orchestration and all will be well when we come home again.

Peace,
Doug
