Description
i grew up in the kind of small american town where everyone is known by their ethnicity. in a matter of fact way. so this is how we categorized girls. german girls (dutch included), polish girls (all eastern european countries included), italian girls, the occasional (and much sought after) swedish girl, normally moved in from Minnesota or Wisconsin thanks to her dad's job transfer or something like that, irish girls (red heads!) and last but not least the omnipresent welsh girls. omnipresent because welsh ancestry made up most of the town. 'gentlemen from wales who fled into the hills rather than be enslaved by william of normandy'. that's the beginning of my family history. somewhere in the hills they lost the 'gentlemen' and became instead a scrappy, permanently suspicious people with a wry love of living and an affinity with the hills. so when they migrated here they roosted in the mountains. and their great and great, great grandchildren were us. but back to welsh girls. i've never been to wales, but if william trevor is any authority then the girls there are pretty much the girls here. scrawny, down at heel, reluctant to smile (so that when they do it's like a magical, natural event, like catching a glimpse of a shooting star)...awe inspiringly bad judgement in men and relationships...but such pretty faces, sad faces, the kind of sad that is beautiful because it's like a mirror of the human condition and you see yourself in it and you feel so wonderfully sorry for yourself as you look at them that you love them for it. and eyes like trout pools. other than the exception of 3 weeks dating the daughter of an indian doctor who moved into town and seemed so wildly exotic he might as well have ridden an elephant to work, other than her, i learned about the birds and bees from the welsh girls.

Musically, these days I'm always thinking of josh rouse somewhere in the back of my mind, i'm such a huge fan and never far from one of his songs on a playlist, and of course the swedish pop I like so much and then right in there with it the alt country/folk that fills most of my listening time like blue mountain, and to round it off i've been on a 70's country rock kick (reminds me so much of being a kid), ozark mountain daredevils, firefall, etc. So this has a little of all that in it.

Lyrics
used to hang out at the pool
behind the trailer park
brown our bodies in the sun
passing the day into dark
walk back down to your mom's place
gravel lane hand in hand
sit on the curb with a boom box
make out listening to the band

my skinny ass
raccoon eyed
step dad tough
bottle dyed
welsh girl

raid you mom's party liquor
you taste like chapstick and johnny walker
you and me we weren't great talkers
but we got by with each other
drinking on the bed in your bedroom
smurfette and joe cool
didn't have a play but playing the fool
bluffing through a nothing hand

my skinny ass
raccoon eyed
step dad tough
bottle died
welsh girl

Nice one man
Sounds great.
Interesting sounds here and there with hard panning. That really keeps things interesting. Cool effect.

I couldn't resist, could I? My own Welsh ancestry is a lot closer that your own, I think, at two generations. I live a stone's throw from my roots, in fact, spent a large part of my younger years living in the North of the country. Hard, I think, to typecast the females therein, [hard to typecast anyone anywhere really] but I always found them to be dark-eyed, and very passionate. Not so sure about the scrawny, down at heel bits! I liked the Welsh ladies I got to know, very much, truth be known, but your description is very eloquent, in a Jack Kerouac sort of way!

Back to your song. It's a really catchy number, reminds me some of Per Ubu, for some reason. The bass is really good and holds everything together really nicely. I love all the little FX you've panned in. Top song, second listen now. Glad you've made this available, thanks!

I knew that the title would make a few people curious. I've got an aristocratic branch that came over in 1700 and a hillbilly side that got here in 1840. So no doubt your ties are much closer than mine lol. I guess when we say someone's 'German' or 'Italian' we mostly mean that they have a German or Italian last name, and their people have some of the broad characteristics of those immigrant groups here in the US. So us 'Welsh' over here probably have little in common with our genetic relatives in Wales. Glad you liked the song man, thanks for the close listen and the thoughtful comment.

I never knew that about Liverpool, but a very strange coincidence since I've been a Liverpool football fan since I was a kid and we had a visiting coach from Liverpool.

Oops!
I just deleted the last comment by mistake. Oh well. So you're a red eh? I support the blue half of the city, in fact just got back from today's game. Everton beat Tottenham 1-0, but your team lost to Sunderland. Ha! I'll still like your song however. ;-)

Sweet bit of history rock
even if it's personal history (though you and davajonah are taking it beyond). Really a fun listen musically and lyrically.

welsh boy
here! A friend of mine who is an artist once had an exhibition in Llanberis (small town at the foot of snowdon) which depicted welsh girls as underage mothers - basically sluts. He had people threatening to kill him and he had to go into hiding!!! Nice song, very understated.

man i hope i don't have to go into hiding. true enough though, thinking back over the girls i dated in middle and high school, i bet 90% were pregnant by 18. i see girls like that now out around town and i tell my wife, 'i can write her entire life story right now just seeing her at 16'. it's sad but true. glad you liked the song, and thanks for the listen!

This is great. I enjoyed reading your description as much as the listen. You should blog. I'm also a fan of Swedish Pop and you can tell you are too by how tastefully done and beautifully sparse the arrangement is. Downloaded.

the Swedes
I never get tired of most Swedish pop. It's the kind of stuff I can put on a playlist and then 6 years later it still sounds new. Weirdly appropriate for any mood also. Really glad you liked the tune enough to download, thanks man.

Right in the mainline of the disaffected pop groove... dig the guitar break! Nothing wrong with the girl... the bass line is outstanding support
even the squeaks are working!

I like the sparse arrangement, it goes with the understated vocal. There are some innovative guitar parts/tones that provide some interesting flavors. I like the way you channel your younger self seemingly at will.

I like your back story ,,, It's funny because we tend to do that , categorize. This is an excellent tune. It's rocky but There's a real lightness to it. I really like what the drums and bass do and the general overall dynamics and spaces or air you leave in the tune. I like what happens at 1:11 and that cool sounding guitar noodling comes. And those bits of keys that drift in ... excellent lyrics along with your distinctive vocals.
Cheers

ironic, because i have a man cold right now
i hate being sick. i'm the world's worst patient. glad you liked the song. i like to try to keep the pop songs light musically and heavy lyrically, or at least honest lyrically. pop is a teenage genre, so i like to keep it teenage. i think that drama never leaves us, we're pretty much 16 at some level for our entire lives. thanks for mentioning the solo, i took a lot of time figuring out what I wanted to do and then once it was finished i thought 'that's it?' lol.

Smooth, understated, coolness.
This is a bit different from what I think of as "trademark tempie" but it is a very enjoyable detour. Smooth, understated, coolness. The description is quite enlightening. Firefall, now there's a band I still listen to on vinyl... Thanks for the post, Peter.

unfortunately, i never got a trademark
so this is totally legal! glad to find another firefall listener. most people say 'who'? until you play them a song and they say THATS who sang that? What i find really amusing is that today's top 40 country is all 70's country rock. all those bands should be doing comeback tours with keith urban.

their love was as mobile as their home
great song, I love the guitar arrangement with the arpeggiated bits and the lead with the wacky effects. For some reason some of the instrumental bits reminded me of the German band Can (circa Future Days.. a favourite of mine).
Really great sounding bass and drums too.

Lyrics and liner notes are interesting and enjoyable as always. Love the literate/literary quality to the lyrics, tells a story and evokes a mood. Quality lyrics are pretty rare even in great music, even most of the music I love the most has lyrics that are just kinda "good enough to go with the music" so your stuff definitely stands out... thanks for sharing it!

lyrics
it drives me nuts when people get lazy with lyrics. i'll yell at the radio. 'this is a good song, that's all you could think of!!!!!' usually the better rhyme is right there, and i don't know how that guy lives with himself when he hears the song. no doubt it helps that he's probably in a hot tub with a bikini model and never listens to his own music anyway.

Very cool song man...Your music sounds so familiar but I can't put my finger on it,almost a Steely Dan vibe at times.I like the stark lyrics and the back story too.

I've been remiss
and have a lot of catching up to do hear at MJs. Starting with Tempie is always a winner. I hear late period Wilco here. Something about your delivery puts me in mind of Tweedy in this one. The musical space is expertly crafted too. Great use of textures and the emptiness between instruments. The outro takes hints of. OMD and mixes in a little Fleet Foxes.
Not as immediate ad "Dead Milkmen" but this is its strength. Tempie is a sound, and it's a good sound.
