Hand & Heart

Description
Recently written and I have kept the recording fairly basic - just me and the Maton (although there are three guitar tracks) using a mike. No bass, strings or harmony this time. I thought the simple approach suited the lyrics and the tune.

I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics
Hand and Heart
Words and Music by Philip Gardner

There’s things that make life easy
And there’s things that make life hard,
And the choice is not an easy one to make
Some will seek out silver
And some will seek out pain
And some can’t tell what’s real from what is fake

There’s many things I’ve chased through life ,
I’ve watched them come and go
Some of them are stupid, some are smart
But as I look back over them
There are just two I want
Give to me your hand, give me your heart

A hand to help me on the way, to lift me when I’m down
A heart to love and build a life that we can call our own

My mind used to be searching
And didn’t let you in
I even said that we would have to part
But now I know that everything
Comes right down to this
I only need your hand and then your heart

Instrumental (verse)

A hand to help me on the way, to lift me when I’m down
A heart to love and build a life that we can call our own

And now I know that everything
Comes right down to this
Give to me your hand, give me your heart

Yes now I know that everything
Comes right down to this
I only need your hand and then your heart

That guitar of yours sounds wonderful. And your vocals are ... how to say ... delightfully forthright. I like the chord progression at the tail end of the verses, in particular. Really nice. Another hit.

Hands, yes...
This is a very fine post, Philip. It has a calming, natural feeling that gets its message across very effectively. The guitars and vocal are sitting nicely in the mix. At this stage I am prepared to offer you my hand, both of them , in fact, in sustained applause. Not quite so sure about the heart end of the deal though :-) Much enjoyed. Talk sonn, Peter.

Hi Stan!
I appreciate the supportive comments on the song! I'm very happy with the way the Maton is sounding at the moment - the recorded sound is what I hear when I play it. That's the Blue Yeti at work, I think. Hope the rest of your day has gone well, too! Cheers. Philip

You are brilliant Philip, just a modern day Dylan style tune, love it!
Philip18 said 1930 days ago (March 15th, 2012)
Hi Neil
Thanks for the comment, Neil. I think I'm in my comfort zone with this song - the folkies of the 60s and 70s (and of those, Dylan was the Main Man) are favourites of mine.

nicely done ...
sounds like a thoroughly honest and heartfelt recording....reminds me of Johnny Cash doing his Songs of the Old West series of albums...they were very stripped back as this ...... really nice playing on all the guits as well ...another triumph from the antipodes.........

Soulful
Crystal clear guitars, soulful vocals, and a well-written. What else could you want.

Great one.

Not in the vocals, but lyrically reminds me of Dylan. Or Stills singing Dylan, that's better.

Different bed
Funnily enough, I first started playing a bluesy rocky sort of feel for this song, but couldn't seem to get it flowing so wandered into the comfort zone (for me) of a folky sort of thing. Clean as the Board of Health - that's good! Thanks for listening, Tony, and for leaving a comment.

This Song Is Why!
This song is why I really enjoy trolling the MacJams. I mean, alot of songs posted to this site are just marvelous feats of instrumentation, musicality, production, finesse, vocal and guitar dynamics, beats galore and more! Then a small, sparse song appears and just cuts thru everything! Pure joy to the ears and a smile breaks out on my face. Much enjoyed!!
