Description
Somebody asked me (thank you Dimm!) where I've been lately! Well, work is always sucking up my time in a Dracula-like fashion, but on the positive side, I done bought me a ukulele and have been teaching myself how to play it (this may take a while, let me tell you, but in a year from now, I expect to be another Don Ho--or even Don's brother, Don Hoo Hee). If any of you play the uke, PLEASE tell me that eventually I'll be able to pull off those physically impossible seeming chord fingerings!

I had time to crank out a tune tonight, and this is a song my piano teacher taught me when I was maybe 12. I recall how "adult" I felt playing and singing this--a real "grown-up" song. And I still remember the great advice she gave me: "Now Michael, you are just too young to really know what the hell you're singing about here, but just make believe that you do." This was very sound advice, although I didn't realize it at the time. The music here was written by the great jazz pianist, Joe Bushkin.

Thanks again good care now,

Michael

Accompaniment/arrangement: Alan MacPike
Vocal: Ol' Muscle Throat (especially sinewy tonight) with a sprinkle of Flonase™
Artwork: With cover art like that on the sheet music, it's an absolute certainty they sold billions of copies, right?

Good to hear another smooth song from you, Michael! Mr McPike is in form, too - the backing swings. Warm, easy, swirling vocal is a joy to listen to. And a bit of trademark humour to finish things off. Delightful!

Thanks Philip!
I love this song because it brings back memories of myself and my piano teacher sitting at separate pianos and doing a "give and take" with the words. Thanks from us both! You take care now, Michael

Oh, Look at Me Now!
Good to hear you back Michael ... I have missed your swingin' posts. I love the uke. My parents bought me one when I was ten and within a few months I was making up songs. It is truly an amazing instrument and underrated ... everyone thinks Tiny Tim or as you said Don Ho. Good luck with it!!
Now the song ... what can I say ... the crooner is back. I loved it. Your voice is sounding good. I guess the nasal spray helps! Love the horn break in this one. I like the two bags over my head part at the end ... fabulous!
Cheers Michael

Hi Stan!
Speaking of the uke, I was almost about to PM you with a question regarding it, but I think I figured out my dilemma. I know you play it extremely well! Yes, I know what you mean about it being treated lightly (even I made a "Don Ho" wisecrack!) but any instrument that can be played well deserves respect (just like Larry Adler did with the harmonica, which also got "no respect" before he came along). I am really thrilled to be learning how to play it and being the compulsive bozo I am, will probably be pretty good at it in time. And...thank you so very much for your awfully kind words on this thing! You take care now, Michael

Cover...ha I remember
sorting through my Grans piano stool and her other stashes of sheet music and marvelling at how corny the covers were...art wise ...this is a classic example....not familiar with this song so I'll take it away and get to know it better!

Ukulele tips ...get some callouses on left hand finger tips and on the inside tip of your right hand index finger.....you have probably already smashed it a couple of times on t6he Uke body.......just natures way of reminding you she's a bitch and slow down a tad.......chord changes...the really tricky ones try them in isolation from the song....it's such a small instrument, especially coming from playing piano where your fingers are spread out that trying to bunch them up in such a confined space will lead to some interesting finger contortions....this has probably been of no help whatsoever but just keep plunking away at it and it will make sense....and watch some You Tube there is some good stuff out there, barrel rolls inverted strums anf George Formby technique.....this songs good by the way ......

Mr Uke Himself!
Thanks for your pointers Chris! I'm finding one big difference between fingering for the piano and for the uke is that the fingers spread outward on the keys (more or less), on the uke, the joints of the finger are curling inward, toward the palm, so it's a whole new bag! I would rate my fingers at the medium size, not terribly long, but I wish they were thinner for this instrument! As always, a great pleasure to hear from you and I thank you so much for being you! Take good care now and keep up the good work! Michael

Welcome back Michael
You're sounding swell (appropos for the time period, I think ;-) No, seriously (as if you could ever be serious) this is a very smooth crooner-type tune that you do so well.
The keywords, as usual, are a hoot and should be a big help to anyone searching for this kind of music.

Two pairs of sunglasses--that was good Erin, thanks! You are so kind to come and comment on this thing, especially as I've only had enough time lately to favorite the good things I've been hearing the past several weeks, and it is extremely appreciated partner--thank you! Oh yes, the Knife and Fork--it was across from my high school and my best friend Jerry's father was the head waiter there. I have a funny story about that: Jerry was working there as a bus boy and one night he called me up and said that as he spoke, both Frank Sinatra and Burt Lancaster were sitting at table not far from him. I asked how they looked, and I'll never forget his immortal reply: "Burt looks great! As for Sinatra, well, I'll put it this way: he probably feels just as healthy as you or me, but BOY does he look OLD!!" You take care now! Michael

Well....
I haven't been around of late. So coming across my favorite crooner is a pleasant surprise. You and yours never disappoint when it comes to an old tune recaptured in your own style. This one hits the mark. Thanks.\

And, I agree the uke is a merciless taskmaster. Too small with too big of fingers and funny fingerings.... Oooo.

Oh, Look at Me Now!
Welcome back! Your vocals sound great as usual, so you must be getting in some practice time despite the lack of posts lately. Good luck with the uke. My guess from playing guitar is that the chord fingerings are not the be-all-end-all, you should be able to play compelling parts using 1 or 2 notes from the chords.

Dave!
Thanks for the welcome and those terribly kind words that went with it! Yes! I know what you mean about the chords--I had a semi-revelatory experience last night while practicing that I can sometimes get away without fingering all the notes (you'd think as a pianist, I'd have thought of that earlier, but NO!) It is great to hear from you Dave--take care and thanks again! Michael

I think my love of this music was inherited from my first piano teacher, who worked as an arranger at Radio City Music Hall around the era these songs were written. She just filled up my young head with that particular time in music. Thanks so much for the very kind words and you take good care now! Channeling Sinatra!
I hope you will take that as a compliment. Just struck me that you sing this classic with a certain suavity that Sinatra often brought to his performances. It is always such a pleasure to hear your rendition of these numbers. (The "touch of Flonase" explains the ever-so slight—and uncharacteristic— pitch issues. Hope you are feeling better. It's a bummer of a cold season this year!) What a wonderful collection you have assembled. I thorough enjoyed this.
