Dead Milkmen

I don't know what it's like where you're at, but around here it's pretty much summer. Been 70+ for two weeks. Something about the jet stream. But anyway I was leaning against a post watching the water trough fill the other day and the sun was beating down and I was feeling that old lazy summer day feeling, and I was right back in the old neighborhood sitting on my skateboard taking a breather in the middle of the street, shooting the shit with my buddies, t-shirts draped around our heads, Dead Milkmen on the tape player. It's tough to explain that feeling, summer vacation, twelve years old, in between everything, in between the city and the country, in between elementary school and high school, in between the jocks and the geeks, all of us brothers in confusion, spending the last carefree hours of our lives together out in the sun. It was a sweet time. So I tried to capture that. It's a simple tune, but I really like it, I think it's kind of a slow wide left hook to the body that looks like nothing coming in but then suddenly you can't breath, I think it's sneaky like that.

sitting on a skateboard
in the middle of the road
dead milkmen playing
on your buddy's radio
talking about girls

sun on your shoulders
scabs on your knees
hot wind in your long hair
in the leaves on the oak trees
in the suburbs

your buddy's mom is always
cooler than your mom
tease her while she's making lunch
trying out your boy / girl charm
thinking about girls

downstairs in the basement
reading thrasher magazine
thinking about the places
you aint never gonna see
in the suburbs

Your Summer Is My Winter
Those chilly 70's!!

Speaking of the 70's, dude, you belong on the AM radio with the likes of Cat Stevens, Kenny Rogers, Jim Croce, B.J. Thomas, Glen Campbell, Neil Diamond, Sugar Loaf, and all those songwriters that owned my transistor radio. I've said it since the day I first heard your music. You belong on AM Radio. I love when you write songs in this simple and reflective style of yours. It's funny looking back at ourselves and being honest about what we see.

By the way, that was my Dead Milkman cassette.

Thanks for the download.

i was trying to explain cassettes to autumn the other day
and i gave up. 'it's an old timey thing' was the best that i could finally do. all those guys you mention are my heroes. i appreciate that you get me. everybody wants to know where you got those extra arms? they're mine. those are buddy arms.

the more honest i am about myself the more i like myself. which is weird, because the more honest i am the more i have to admit that i'm a complete asshat. but a kind of swell, good hearted asshat. i'm an asshat with a heart of gold.

yikes, 12...
my daughter turn ten this year. she wants to be grown up. i keep telling her that as soon as she's grown up she'll want to be a kid so just enjoy it. in a full on, exuberant, roald dahl kind of way. what i'm not telling her is that i'm terrified that she'll grow up and i'll be the only kid left in the house.

i know that no matter how understanding I am, i'll never be cool to my kid. not until she's too old to be cool. then we can be uncool together. but we'll never be cool together. that's just not the way that nature works. i'm OK with that. i'm going for the 'my dad is not an embarrassment status'. that's my goal.

Dead Milkmen
Captures the mood perfectly. Mellow & sunny arrangement and understated vocals support the theme in the lyric well. Great job!

man i'm glad you remember that too. just sitting around, feeling lazy, feeling like something cool was about to happen but you didn't know what. each day bleeding into the next. that was good stuff. learning to be a person. glad you like the song, if i could be anything i'd want to be mellow and sunny. do you think jack johnson is like that at home? or does he scream at his kids? 'DON'T WRITE ON THE WALL, DAMMIT, I JUST PAINTED THAT, JESUS...' and then feel really bad about it, because if people only knew...

hustle and flow
that's me. glad you liked it man, appreciate you stopping by. i'm a sucker for a semi hollow body guitar. what's that on your avatar? epiphone? or the real deal? Or the real unreal deal, like my beloved oE30?

It's a Gibson Howard Roberts model - I bought it new in the 70s so it's become an old friend!

Laid back, sunny days, but not completely carefree. Cool reminiscence.

The best time
I was on the East coast near Pittsburgh then. 10-12 years old. It was the best of times actually.

Great topic and tune dude.

Caught this at work the other day and I'm finally getting back for a proper comment. Love the lyrics. Very honest! They read like your own first hand experience. The wistful melody and vocal delivery perfectly matches the mood of the lyrics. Nice arrangement. The throbbing synth strings are very effective. Great changes! A real winner.

Craig this is you at your finest. The jangle, the strings, the echo. Charm and pop sensibility in equal quantities. Your voice gets better with every song. I think, like me, you have taken time to find both your true voice and music. You're making such great songs, you're one of my favourite acts to listen to, bar none.
For me the seventies was hot UK summers, the transition from flame to punk. Hearing Ska for the first time, Gary Numan (Dorsey's secret dad) and finally being brave enough to challenge the priest in my catholic school about religion. I loved those times. I'm glad I lived through a time with less pressure to grow up than nowadays.
I confess, you've compared me to the Dead Milkmen before, but I'm not sure I've ever heard 'em. I'll get round to it. Looking forward to one day sitting on a porch somewhere with y'all and listening to this song, embarassing the hell out of ya by telling just how sweet it is.

I think it is great that you can remember when you were 12, Craig. My memories are slightly less clear... You do a fine job of story telling with this cool, understated song. Enjoyed. Regards, Peter.
