Lyrics
The Last Dancing Man

he was so happy when the band would play
basking in flattery in his youthful days
in the end it all fades away
once polished shoes are totally worn
dancing days walked out the door
what will become of the last dancing man

when the beat broke down
last echoes fade from the sound
there stood the last dancing man
when the rhythm broke down
when no one was around
there stood the last dancing man

he could dance til the end of time
saturday nights like a new years party
but even then the party will end
play the girls like a violin
a woman in his arms future in his eyes
what will become of the last dancing man

when the beat broke down
last echoes fade from the sound
there stood the last dancing man
when the rhythm broke down
when no one was around
there stood the last dancing man

taking a wife changed his life
baby on the way
nailed his feet to the wooden floor

so many years and he is so alone
one more trip to the dance floor
wheres the music that had the swing
once polished shoes are totally worn
dancing days walked out the door
what will become of the last dancing man

when the beat broke down
last echoes fade from the sound
there stood the last dancing man
when the rhythm broke down
when no one was around
there stood the last dancing man

there stood the last dancing man of the world

Great intro! Grabbed me right away! Great melodic rocker! As always I love the way you layered the guitar parts and tones! A feast of excellent guitar playing!

part of the trick is to get a single coil pickup guitar(s) and a humbucker equipped guitar(s) to broaden the mix of tones. plus, finding a complimentary way to work them so they aren't stepping on each other toes

Last Dancing Man
The intro grabbed me and the guitars never let me go. They are really good. The strange timing of the lyrics took me a bit of getting used to but by song's end they seemed to fit just fine. Nice post, Vic. Take care, Peter.

thanks peter
the whole song has a strange sort of timing :-) this pretty much required starting on the first downbeat rather then the second beat that most people are accustomed too

thanks again for the listen peter

It just...
...rocks 'n' rolls. I agree with those open chords and drums. Very VERY catchy and you don't stop the engagement for the entire number. You tell an interesting story, too. There is some real sadness with the marriage, wife, baby, etc. I wonder why he stopped dancing at that point. Seems there'd be even more cause. Well, I am not sure I understand that lyric. It is a coll concept, though, about a man so filled with movement that it even comes through in his life at the end (or so I think that's what you're saying). ... The fiddle after the last stanza is really hot. I would have loved hearing it earlier, too...Wonder if perhaps jacking the tune up a half step about stanza six would give the whole tune a little boost just right there. It's a thought. I thoroughly enjoyed this tune, Vic. You've done some really nice things here.

thanks for the listen. i really like your idea of raising the tune up a half step. that would of been great for the last verse and chorus. and, no fiddle...... just guitar trills

Very cool one Vic
Grabbed me from the start. Pink Floyd feel in the intro. Then into a Petty, Byrds. Springfield thing. Really enjoyed this one a lot.

A iconic image in Australian history. Love the guitars that start this off! Sort of Byrds sound to it all. Interesting lyrics and good vocal. Impressive work, Vic!

The Last Dancing Man
Viv, that is so true what you wrote above. Now the song ... love the guitars ... it almost sounds like a 12 string electric ...good separation between the guitars ... all in their own comfortable world but working well together. Great melody and vocals. I hear the byrds, XTC, early Neil and Vic! Really like your lyrics. Real good performance and mix.
Cheers

there's two jangle guitars separated, i think the trick is using two different guitars, one a single coil and the other a humbucker, just enough contrast to compliment and fill out the sound.
thanks for checking it out

The Last Dancing Man..
Lovin' the British flava in the rhythm section,
crystal clear mixx makes the guitars and the vocals sparkle...transitions are delightful and
a nice surprise depth-wise, adds a lotta color and flava..a Big Smile City gem here my friend..:):):)peace

so
catchy. I want more. This sounds like some of the stuff on Bruce Springsteen's last few albums, especially in the guitar. Solid vocals, though to my ears, you may be falling behind the groove a little bit at times. That didn't matter to me all that much, though -- a testament to how great the song is.

a nice thing about dot semi hollow body guitars (or at least this one is the wide range of tones you can get, from jangle to warm mellow. putting on a new set of strings didn't hurt either

you know
it's interesting. i often play really funky music but i can't dance to save myself. i love that staccato little rhythm bit here and there. also really like the bridge that proceeds the solo. and since i'm 'alsoing' i also like the solo a lot - a pure pop solo. happily downloaded.
