Description
When you have a child (and care that you have a child), you tend to be more self aware. You look at the ways that you have failed, and the ways that you have succeeded, and you ask yourself why, so that you can teach your child to either avoid the failure or attain the success. One of the ways that I've been extraordinarily lucky is in marriage. And so I've been asking myself what the secret is, because I know what it is to crash and burn in marriage too, and I want my daughter to be able to find as good a relationship as her mother and I have, and to avoid the heartache of the other. So I was thinking about this off and on and I just happened to be watching cartoons with my daughter and I noticed how all the superheroes had that little extra something - a special bit of equipment, or friend, or whatever, that completed the superhero package, without which they'd still be super strong or super fast or whatever but that wouldn't be enough and I thought that's it, that's what makes our marriage what it is. We're both capable people, and had fine lives individually. But together, we're something else, we're better and more capable. Our professors used to joke in grad school that we were the wonder twins. And we kind of are. We're funnier together, we're more ambitious together, we're more creative together, our quality of life in general is better together than it is apart. We're a team, we're each that 'little something else' set sets the other over the top. Hence the song.

Musically, this is straight up 70's Hanna Barbera super hero Saturday morning cartoon. It's summer, the sun is shining, and Marine Boy is saving the day...

Lyrics
do you remember marine boy?
he had that oxy-gum
and a bulletproof suit
yeah, propellers in his boots

some things are fine by themselves
some things well, they need a little something else

you're my little something else
(you know you like yourself better with me)

do you remember the space ghost?
he had that magic ship
and an invisi-belt
yeah, a monkey for help

some things are fine by themselves
some things, well they need a little something else

i'm your little something else
(you know you like yourself better with me)

fourth?
yikes. you've nearly got a team in the literal sense. growing up we had a neighbor who had nine. THATS a team :)

hey what's rocha malhada mean? Is that your middle/last name? Harold RochaMalhada sounds a little incongruous...

Have that little something extra... The super ability to write great tunes!
The grungy pop angle really works.

The word "charming" came to mind right from the start. The chorus really nailed that sweet vibe. Then that rolling bass came in at 1:08. That really raised the intensity followed by the return of that sweet and charming pop melody and lyrics. The arrangement is excellent. Love the percussion and little synth lines. The harmonica is a very nice touch. Great contrasting guitar sounds. I'm listening on the internal speakers on a PC at work and the clear mix shines through beautifully.

the best pop music is self consciously cool. in a teenage way. because pop music is teenage music, and when we old guys steal into it we have to do so from a memory of that teeter totter between absolute confidence and absolute terror that people will find out we're not absolutely confident.

constants
if I can't do something differently than i've heard it done before, i'm not going to do it, because in my mind what's the point? that's just a mental block I have and it works for me for people who like things just a little different. of course on the other side of it those people who like things more conventional and finished think I suck lol!

A lil' sumpin' sumpin' else
Top notch fun. It's hard to imagine she'll go wrong with a dad that watches cartoons with her and writes songs like this. But your concern is that little something else, I guess. She's a lucky kid.

Among the great guitar sounds/not choices, the synth sound has a great 70's soft brass sound in that "some things are fine by themselves" bit. Don't know if that was intended or an accident. But judging by the detail you put in your sounds, it was intentional.

Sumpin
i thought about going out to youtube and listening to all the old hanna barbera songs but i nixed that because i wanted it to sound like my memory of those tunes, not the actual songs. that synth sound evoked that vibe for me.

i love having a whammy bar now for all those little guitar sounds. i think it's the greatest guitar invention of all time. i love the name too - "whammy". how can you not have fun with that?

first of all
I LOVED the song description. Thanks for sharing that.

Then I hit play... COOL! The mix was clean and there was a good balance, but I wanted everything to sound a little bigger. Maybe it could benefit from mastering? The lyrics are fun and clever, lots of instrumental layers woven throughout, chilled out vibe. Very much enjoyed. Thanks!

ElPeruano
Are you from Peru? I have a llama. that's the first thing that came to my mind when it occurred to me that your screen name meant Peruvian. That's my one link to Peru LOL! ah man i make myself laugh and laugh. but seriously, i do have a llama.

You're absolutely right about the mastering, and i'm surprised you were the first to mention it. I realized after I posted this and listened to it that I posted the pre-master track mix by mistake. That's the problem with naming all my files the same thing. But they don't let you change it once you post it, and i figured everyone could just turn it up.

so dude I was impressed with your tune - had me hooked for DC4C or Postal Service and then the rap came around and took it to another level. very creative and well done. I'm thinking suddenly we've got all this new cool talent around here, it's like a fresh spring breeze. It was getting stuffy! And then I look at your profile and you've been around for a hundred years? For real? Anyway I'll keep track of you from now on.

While listening the first thing that hits me and always does when I listen to one of your songs is your distinctive voice ... and man, growly cool bass tone. This is pop-ee in a strange way. Catchy chorus, witty lyrics and original approach makes this one enjoyable listen. Good song writing!!

strange ways here we come
hey man thanks. glad you liked it and I appreciate the close listen. i start every song with a bass line. it's my favorite instrument. once i was in a band and they wanted me to sing and play bass. only i can't. i physically can't sing and play bass at the same time. i couldn't even do just like heaven, which has one of the easisest bass lines of all time.

Finely crafted
Good back story, Craig. And you have been able to translate it into a finely crafted pop song. Marine Boy always won out in the end and this tune has that same inevitable feeling of certainty and celebration. Fine song. Thanks, Peter.
