Description
This is a collaboration between sammydix, our friend Scott Robertson from our DAW forum and myself. My first post here at MacJams, although Sammy and I have done a few tunes together and have many more coming (all in good time).

This song is inspired by the story of a man who is lucky enough to realize what is important in life before it is too late. It's an amazing thing to recognize what surrounds you and to be able to take time each and every day to appreciate what you have.

Any thoughts on the song or the production are most welcome.

Lyrics
Verse 1
Pay no mind to moments,
then nothing’s left to feel
I just keep on rolling along,
like an old rusted spinning wheel

I give but leave you nothing,
but vacant memories
I just keep on hearing your voice,
like a cold, lonely autumn breeze

Chorus 1
(main)
We won’t need a new beginning,
nor words to ease our fall
When in the end I’m looking back,
at shadows where we stand
What once I took for granted,
I’ll never understand

Verse 2
Drifting from the shoreline,
churned through an open sea
Holding to a makeshift keel,
and a promise of what would be

Bridge
Dry your eyes, and I’ll try
Say good bye, and I...
And I...
Feel like I’m losing you over and over and,
and ever as I leave you here

Chorus 2
(backing)
Lean on... lead on...

(main)
We won’t need a new beginning,
nor words to ease our fall
When in the end I’m looking back,
at shadows where we stand
What once I took for granted,
I’ll never understand

For all of our misgivings,
we never built a wall

There is no need
To feel like I’m gone
For you will always have this song

Love the song! It's so cool to hear Sammy singing such an intimate and sensitive piece. He really nails it. Great falsetto parts. The guitar accompaniment is beautiful. Sweet tone and changes. The heavy orchestration toward the end was unexpected and surprising, but very effective. Great first post! Can't wait to hear what you follow this up with.

Thanks
Thank you, alackbass. It is a privilege to be able to work with Sammy. I am biased obviously, but I think these are some of his finest vocals. He really delivered the emotion in this performance. Some of the most fun I've had mixing was working on the vocal tracks unaccompanied.

Shadows Where We Stand

. I'm impressed at the sensitive vocals ... wonderful! Lovely song ... the orchestration works well with the acoustic guitars. I like when the kettle drums come in. I also like the end progression. Well done!

Sammy's vocals are nothing short of breathtaking to me. It might be obvious, but I agonized over the arrangement and structure of the classical instruments. My friend Scott Robertson helped polish those off very nicely after I sent him an initial butchered version.

Thanks so much for listening and leaving your thoughts.

Love your screen name by the way!

Nice clean guitars start this off. Warm vocal and harmony. Strings work well. Big drums change the mood -powerful! Gentle ending. Much enjoyed - congratulations to both of you!

Me too!
I was also a huge Sammy fan before we did any songs together. I've said it before, but I find it pretty amazing to have the privilege of working with one of my favourite singers.

Thanks for checking it out and thanks for your kind words.

Just love
that guitar playing and the tone... lovely..... and then Sammy comes in disguised as a singer we haven't heard before, with a lovely wisdom to his voice and then those lovely harmonies give him away..... lovely song and good accompaniment all round..... big production sound, regards M

Thank you kindly. Yup, Sammy can do it all - gritty, smokey, funky, whispy, delicate, raunchy, etc, etc. There's not a style I have heard him attempt that he doesn't sound completely natural doing.

Quality song, KF, and Sam does a very fine job with on the vocals. The subtle acoustic opening works really well. The orchestration is good but I think that it tends to overwhelm the singer a bit too much a couple of times during the song? Congratulations on your first MJ song. Take care, Peter.

Thanks Peter
I appreciate that. I am very happy with how the song turned out in the end. I was a bit nervous about making a first post here for a reason I can't even quite put my finger on... Strangely, this song is a real departure for both Sam and I (if I may be so bold as to speak for Sam).

Perhaps the classical instruments get in the way of the vocals a little in some places, but this song has prompted me to join a tweakers anonymous group and if I have any hope of recovery, I have to move on to the next song. Onward and upward. I'm always conscious of the importance of the vocals, so I'll take your comments forward to my next mix.

Thanks for the comments, and thanks for the congrats!

Great job, Sam's vocal fits the guitar line and the orchestration is just right. Pop and circumstance... the vocal harmony is a pleasant surprise!

Surprise!
Like I say, this is kind of atypical, so even though you didn't know what to expect, what you heard may not be what you should have expected, and hopefully this will not colour your expectations of what to expect next time you are wondering what to expect.

Thanks a lot for the listen and the comments. Despite being outside what I/we would normally do, it was tremendously enjoyable for many reasons.

Sensitive lyric with some strong images. Strong vocals and harmonies. I enjoyed the picked acoustic guitar/string combo, the vibe reminded me of "Dust In The Wind".

Funny you should say that because early on, there was one small section of the song that drifted treacherously close to "Dust" territory, but we reworked it pretty quickly!

Thanks for the very kind words.

Thank you, very much. I love the bridge too. The words in the bridge were born from Sammy's scratch vocal for the track. They just seemed so perfect and so natural. They still do.

Definitely a good tune
Excellent vocals, guitars.

I'm wondering if it really needs the strings. I may be wrong but I'm thinking there's a big Kansas influence here, which would explain the desire for the violins.

Just a thought.

Love the guitar work. Beautifully recorded. Nice changes. The vocals are excellent and sit just right in the mix. No problems at all with the production. Very well done.
