Can't Change the Weather

Description
Wrote this a couple years back. A loved one was going through a sever depression.
I wanted to fix her and I couldn't. So I put that feeling in a song and then put the song in a drawer

I always heard it with bass and drums backing but lacked the gear. I recently acquired EZDrummer and an electric bass and Voila: the sorta Country rock outfit I would've killed to have been in High School. Thirty years later we're rehearsing in my basement--Me, Myself and I. Warning: I may be out my depth here mix-wise.

Lyrics
Can’t Change The Weather

You’ve got that look today
Tear rimmed eyes that gaze my way
I know you’re feeling bad
You wear that smile that says I’m sad

And I…wish I could change your skies to blue
But darlin I can’t change the weather for you

We sit and watch the sky
See the birds as they fly by
The geese are heading south
They took the words right from your mouth

And I…wish I had wings to carry two
But darlin, I can’t change the weather for you

Break

Bridge: Oooh that Canadian wind
I can feel a storm front movin’ in
And though I put on my brave face
When things get rough around this place
I still pray for refuge from the storm

That old black dog’s returned
Feed him once and you get burned
Now he won’t go away
He licks your hand and wants to stay

And I….may act cool but I don’t have clue
Darlin I can’t dry the rain
Push the wind or heal your pain
No I can’t change the weather for you

Can't change the weather
A touch of David Wilcox in the vocal and the melody - I like it a lot. Warm vocal style and the harmonies work very well. Everything seems clean in the mix - I can hear everything distinctly. Drums work OK (albeit with the occasional bit of snare drum wild whacking). Depression is a terrible thing for all involved: those who have it and those who have to deal with the effects of it - you capture that well. As usual, your musicianship shines - those guitars are great! Impressive work, John!

Sincere Compassion Sung Baby!
Very nice and felt emotional Song John. It is painful when you reach and can't touch those you love who are dealing with emotional drain. My what a feeling this song emits. Lovely

Fine song
Nasty photo! Nice song. You have done a fine job of telling the sad story of your friend's situation, John. The subtle harmonies and quality guitar work all sit comfortably in the mix and sound as good as ever. The bass is good. The drums, for the most part, do their intended job but they occasionally stray from being "in the pocket" and go off by themselves :-) Thanks, John. Regards, Peter.

Quality writing John
Great lyrics and melody. Nice clean mix and performance.

My only crit would be I think the snare is a little loud and it all works a lot better when the sidestick is being used.

Other than that it's another songwriting gem!

Cheers

Thanks, Dick, Think you're right about the sidestick. I may have another go at the drums. I still early in the learning curve.

Cheers!

I've seen skies like that here in the east coast of Canada ... catchy melody and I like the lyrics. Thats a sweet and tasty electric lead ... your vocals and harmonies are warm, inviting. Drums just need a bit of eq-ing ... maybe a touch of verb on the snare to push it back in the mix otherwise a nice warm mix and an excellent song.
Cheers

EZ Drummer is pricey, but so far I've been happy with it. Takes time, however--the most precious commodity in my estimation. Thanks for the comments, Chris

It's nice to hear you sing along to a strong rock backbeat. Always honest and heartfelt songwriting in your tunes. I love your tasteful electric accompaniment and solo. You could give songwriting workshops. And I would attend.

I totally dig this song.
The way you play and sing it, very gentle.
The weather theme is great to paint the human condition.
Cool, bright mix!
Love the Beatlesque endnote :-)
Very much enjoyed!

Nice Ballad
Vocals are spot on and the guitar accompaniment sets the mood. The EZ drummer fits well, bass and the lead guitar all blend nicely. Harmonies are fantastic, subtle strategic chord changes about two-thirds the way through. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Laid back
...rhythm and arrangement, and nice strong lyrics to carry it all off. And the bridge holds quite a few surprises. I was always a sucker for bridges. Thank, Per

I love the guitars on this...
All of 'em. I just like the sounds, and I like the relaxed pace of the whole tune.

I also really enjoy your vocals, and I think you did a particularly nice job where the harmonies come in...

Just got EZ Drummer, myself, but have yet to get brave enough to do something with it...

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
