Description
Perhaps a strange song, perhaps not. It is all in the eye or in this case the ears of the beholder/listener. "Everything I have told you is a lie Stanley, including this." , George to Stanley in the original British version of the film Bedazzeled.

Lyrics
Which Way Is Up?

Swinging on the trapeze, going round and round
Which way is up and which way is down
Every man is an island, each man is a fool
If water was knowledge, he couldn't drown in a pool
One man says it's true, another says it's a lie
But they both look deceitful, when you look them in the eye

Take all the mysteries, put them in a box
Wrap them in cellophane, secure them with locks
And maybe when you die , they'll let you look inside
Then you will know, whether to laugh or to cry

Love is all there is, except for those who hate
The righteous smite the pious, they don't even wait
Lord save us from the certain man, who knows which way is up
Fill our minds with doubt, make us drink from a broken cup
And I am just the singer, of this sad, sad song
But my time is short and I know it won't be long

Which Way Is Up?
Very nice Tom. I love your guitar tone and the interplay between the two guitar tracks. I would have panned them a bit more to create a little more separation. Even still they work beautifully. Very nice vocal and lyrics.

Good Suggestion
I will have to start making a list of your good suggestions. I never think about panning for some reason but could instantly see what you were talking about when I listened with that in mind. It would have given more definition to each guitar part.

Nice accompaniment
The vocals and guitar sit well together.... Interesting lyrics and you did a fine job of singing. Especially enjoyed the break into the lead. Thanks for sharing, thoroughly enjoyed.

which way
Thanks fellow Texan. Always enjoy hearing from my fellow guitarists and especially one as good as you. These days I just sing and play from emotion without too much thinking about what I am doing. Seems to work for me. Guess my thinking was never good for my playing anyway.

Warm vocal over nicely played guitars. You have something to say and say it with feeling. Good one!

Thanks Phillip
This was a strange one but then again look where it came from. Surprising myself that I can still croak one out once in a while as sometimes it seems in practice that I can't. Even hit a high note the other day and surprised myself so much I fell out of the chair.

Which way is up?
A mystery inside a conundrum... The eternal questions of life, nicely captured here, Tom. Warm guitar tones and earthy, sincere vocal work make this worth the journey. Thanks, Peter.

The ole Chicken and an Egg Thing
Howdy there Peter. Yep. all those things you said and more. No longer care where I came from or where I'm going. Just trying to enjoy the journey as those miles keep piling up.

Me and Kris
Met, or should I say observed, a very drunken, stoned Kristofferson in a hotel elevator in Baton Rouge along about 1973. He had his arm around a very pretty girl who was unfortunately not his wife at the time, which happened to be the beautiful Rita Coolidge. He gave a nice concert earlier in the evening and John Prine was the opener.

The Waltz of Discovery
Thanks Doug. Good to hear I put a smile on your face. Actually was expecting a few cyber bricks to be thrown my way because of this song but it hasn't happened. A poet is what I first aspired to be when I was a very callow youth. Never thought at the time that I could ever learn to play guitar or sing decently.

Hi Bronco
Love the use of metaphor, verse and extremely thoughtful words about life and the endless issues we endure. Excellent poetry and finger style guitar. Cheers Mate!

Breathe
I am impressed on how you let the song breathe without extra instrumentation or arrangement. As is often the case, less is more.

Well done Bronco.

There
is nothing better, just an acoustic guitar and a vocal, always a great listen Tom and I love the vibe you have created here with a fine vocal and some excellent guitar picking.
