Description
Inspired by the Monkees and Grand Funk, an anthem/ode to the hobby of basement recording. Pretty narcissistic of me, but hey... sue me!

Once again featuring the rocking drums of the mighty Scofugate.

Lyrics
if a sound's in the air
or wherever it really is
and somebody's there
who just might be listening in
some time after the fact
though we're not in your town,
we'd still like to help ya when you're
partyin down
and breaking the furniture
if thats what you want
hey its the basement fakes
we've been keeping it fake since 2008
making our basement tapes
it's like a night watching lights out on the ocean
it's such a trip how you can skip thru your emotions
we keep it pretty deeply underground.
in a previous room
i stuck together a battleship
covered in glue & not all the pieces fit
but all the same, it was fine
you can't believe a word i write
it's just that I can't help what i like
so sue me!
on a high mountain trail
a spiral of black & white
sacred and veiled
with bright yellow petals
& ashes of the soul.

oh YEAH!! I say Monkees and Grand Funk RR can just eat their hearts out! Not only am I not going to sue you, I'm just D/L'ing this rocker for the motorcycle trip playlist. Cool key changes, great guitar work, and of course Mr. Fugate brings it home! Love the keyboard @1:40 - terrific job Mr. Relic!

The Basement Fakes
I hear the pop (Monkees) and the rock (Grand Funk). But there's so much more here. The mix of acoustic and electric guitars in the verses sounded like Mellencamp's band at it's prime (Lonesome Jubilee). But the verses were full on new wave (Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello eat your hearts out). The vocal harmonies and melodies scream XTC. That organ (or electric piano sound) on the left is awesome. Oh...and the nod to the Beatles by ending with that major 6 chord was awesome. Downloaded!

thanks for checking out the song! Yeah, XTC and EC were staples of my musical diet about 25 years ago but the influence is still there! (of course I still listen to those artists but most of it is completely internalized).

Thanks for the collab... your drumming is superb as always.
I was happier with the production on this one than some of my other tunes, thanks to a couple of cool mastering products from Slate Digital - the Slate Virtual Console and the FG-X mastering program... so far I think I like the compression/limiting better than ozone. (ozone still used for reverb and Eq though)

Basement
Great opening guitars - and that continues throughout the song. Expressive vocal - a bit of humour in there too. Those drums are good - solid when they need to be, with a bit of flair when there's a gap to fill. Good rocker!

thanks very much!"solid" is indeed a good adjective for
Scott's drumming. It's the foundation and the glue that holds everything together...

My older brother always made the coolest looking models... my efforts were rather sad and scruffy, but still a sense of pride in completion I guess!

Monkees and Grand Funk?
Did either of them start as a basement band? In that era, was there anyone that didn't?

Ok, this is a good and solid rocker, so the Grand Funk part is covered. Where do the Monkees come in?

Grand Monk
Not so much musical influence, but the lyrical content was directly inspired by 2 "statement of purpose" tunes: "Hey Hey We're the Monkees" and "We're an American Band".

Man this is cool!
You do have elements of those styles! I hear Kinks too. Kicking guys! I love it!

Elvis Costello
Style too. Another fav!
Relic67 said 1872 days ago (May 7th, 2012)
thanks
thanks for the nice comments... Listening-wise, I tend to lean towards music that mixes melodicism with rockier elements, usually featuring singers that can't really sing that well... so that's the comfort zone for me! (not that I could actually deliver a polished vocal performance LOL)

Like the guitar work in this ... I hear the monkees influence with the keyboard sound but there are lots of great influences and sounds happening ... excellent vocals and an excellent tune. Love that last chord.

Nice elk
what is it that has made every indie band on the planet now want their album cover to look like a 1953 Field and Stream cover? That's a really weird trend. I like it, because I like 1950's outdoor magazines, but it mystifies me.

Really like the long jammy intro. And the little lead come around between parts of the verse. Classic stuff. This is a long lost Paul Westerberg song. Is that you on keys? Wild.

Man this is so well done. The composition is eclectic but never feels too far outside the mainstream to really swing. The lyrics are witty in that replacements jeans and high tops kind of way and the vocals are right in the groove. Really enjoyed. And DL'd to enjoy again and again. Thanks!

The Lawrence Elk Orchestra
LOL! I swear to god, I was just looking for an image that reminded me of a picture in someone's basement (as I understand these type of scenes are popular all over the world, even in the freaking desert). However, if I tapped into the zeitgeist of hipster lame-i-tude, I guess I'll just have to "own" that (as they say). :)

Glad you liked the music, the Replacements are another of those bands that made a deep impression on me. The keyboard solo was done with generous use of the "pencil tool" - keeping it fake right to the very end ... except for Scott's authentic drumming!

Nothing fake about this! Vocals/harmonies move in subtle ways against the backer. Tasty guitar fills. Good to see Scott back again, glad you introduced him with his proper title :). Great balance and separation in the mix.

luv that organ and catchy chorus most in this one. the bridge section was unexpected but i liked how it temporarily changed the pace before going back again. drums sound fantastic (playing and mix).

hah
Grand Funk is a guilty pleasure for me, I'm assuming the GF influence is in the lines about breaking furniture. Actually putting me in mind of something more indie like Guided by Voices. Very cool track and I love the organ solo. and the subject matter is something dear to most of our hearts I think.

The Grand Funk influence was the overall concept from the song "We're an American Band". Great song, no guilt at all for me! I will allow indie rock like GBV is more where I'm coming from though. Very happy you stopped by and thanks for the kind comments!

Sounds like
Alex Chilton got caught in Neil Young's studio in '69 and decided to write a tune. Love that Monkees vibe and the self referential feel. Cool vox as always. I'd love for Scott to drum for one of my tunes - he adds so much "band" to a tune.
Very very cool tune.
