Description
Have been having a hard time getting any music done lately. I start things and never finish them, finish them and decide they're awful,...

Bryn had sent me a bunch of audio files that he had recorded while out on the town. This particular one he had titled RPM which sounded like a band setting up their equipment; mostly rattling and some feedback. I cut a chunk out and made it fit into a 4 bar loop and then started to play over the top of it. Reminds me of a sound you might hear in an Eno song; I really like that it was a strange non-musical sound as well. It fades in about halfway through the song and sounds like a machine.

the rest of the tune was done with The Rain Piano (from Sampletekk), which is my fave sampled piano, ES2, and some various noises that I had sampled before and dragged into a drum sampler. I like being able to drag various samples into a drum sampler and then mess with the individual sounds and blend them with real drum samples. Not sure how memorable this song is, but I'm thrilled to have actually finished something. I may revisit this and add a Fripp style guitar freakout. Then there is Bryns industrial version that he did...

What I Like
listening on phones is a must. really like that octave harmony and the overall droniness. your knack for melody sure hasn't gone anywhere.

thanks man. i'm a sucker for drones and for doubling vocals with an octave lower part.

bottom octave
the more this builds the more I gravitate toward that piano, it almost splits the vocals in half between high and low your voice is hyptnotic
thanks for a very cool download!

Love the use of the PD sample
great way to build a song - start with a texture add melody and take it from there. Good set of lyrics too. Congrats on the accomplishment - I have been in the same slump for months.

the good thing about getting older? musical slumps don't hit your ego like they would have when you were a younger man.

This is just plain excellent! As you know Michael, I love your shoegazer stuff. That Rain Piano is so cool. You and Bryn always make beautiful music together. Thanks for this!

yeah well
the main problem is that I would have had to actually pull a guitar out, tune it, and I got tired just thinking about that whole process. thought of a band you'd like BTW: Beach Fossils. chimey, psuedo shoegaze. very cute and catchy, kind of sad sounding.

You Do What You Like
very melancholy, but that's all right - i really liked the down octave on the vocal and the echo/reverb effect...

thanks

musical slumps happen - there like a vacation - or else like a wake up call - who knows why the Muses comes and go?

for some reason I am almost always drawn to melancholy sounding music, sort of my thing. as for musical slumps, it could be worse. saw a friend tonight who makes his living writing music and he's freaking out because he is having a dry spell. when it happens to me, I just read more. thanks for stopping by.

i'll do what i like
i really like the chord progression of this tune (i made the same comment on particledots' "your energy is off"). i think the two songs compliment each other really well. your vocal is most excellent. it has a lennon-esque quality that i seem to gravitate to. thank you for the download.

Glad you are back, Michael. I liked the subtle, reflective character of the song and the nice harmonies. Shoegazer, yes, but not in an aimless, haphazard way. Definitely enjoyed the listen. Thanks, Peter.

This is
cool in a .....ah Shoegazer.......I was going to type downbeat sort of way ...then I checked the genre...."always read the paper all the way through before you answer the questions" sort of moment there........yes I like this .....it's not down trodden but it more melancholic.....nice production too......

Do what you like .. as long as you like what you do
I love the world-weariness that imbues your singing. It hints at a number of thorny life-challenging things, not the least being a will to carry on despite all of the obstacles strewn in one's path. The murky situation gets underscored by the complexity of the vocal presentation (I've got to try out that octave-dropping doubling thing - that is so cool!).

Musical lulls happen. It's only natural to question one's self during a down time, when it seems like everything you do has already been done and you are just repeating yourself. As relentlessly creative as your musical mind is, sooner or later something will set things in motion again. No rush. It will happen.

Doing what you like
i thought sammy's comment said 'overall dorkiness' and i was saying 'yes, that's it!' and then saw that I had misread. anyway you're the happiest saddest musician around. you always sound tired but it's a happy tired, like when you've worked all day and you're sitting out in the yard watching the kids run around, it's a world weariness that's earned, so it's good.

...
This is great! I feel like a college kid who comes home for the holidays when I come back to MJ's after being gone for a while. It makes me feel good that the same great musicians are still making great music.

I was playing harmony along to the vox/piano melody on my weissenborn. It sounded cool. So if you have the motivation to go back to this I think you should pull out a guitar and try that with a little fuzz to finish it off. I imagine adding slide harmonies in a 'round' style where each new verse melody has an added guitar melody/harmony until it is a big cacophony of sound at the end.

Love that deep bottom... real nice melody. Enjoy the way the piano mimics the vocals. Cool FX on the vox ... I'm lovin' this ... a lot!

Terrific melody and the ragged edge on the vocals imparts a world weary angst. Pulsing bass adds to the hypnotic quality.

Like that piano
The way the kick hits with the jam definitely sets the track. the piano's touch right along with the lyrics work out very well too.

I comment on songs I like
Warped, distorted, pleasantly unsettling and another excellent example of your guys' talent. I like the light warmth the piano adds contrasting the vocals (the octaves totally work) and what I like most is not only the unusual and cool combination of sounds and samples, it's the overall positive vibe I get from this. Carefree, not careless.

How about food reference: sugar glazed sticky donut topped with Japanese sour cherry?

Enjoyed =)
I love creativity in all forms, it's so cool to hear one creates their sounds or mix them into something new. I like the vibe going on here. To me it's like a march of some sort, maybe to bring freedom back ;) anyways enjoyed!

A keeper
I get a bit of a Peter Gabriel vibe from this. Don't know why since it doesn't sound a lot like him ;-) Maybe something to do with "greatness". Really like the way you build the music and your singing on this is as good as ever. So this is definitely a keeper, much obliged, thank you.

Take care,
Henke

Well okay...
I can imagine giving this a Frippertronic treatment, but I also hear your vocal as coming across in the mode of some of the moodier and more let's-play-with-the-studio moments from Jeff Tweedy... So maybe it needs a guitar battle between Robert Fripp and Nels Cline...

It's a neat song, Michael, with a neat set of lyrics. Pretty simple and throbbity bass track, and your voice then sounds that much more melodic...
