Lyrics
she's standing by the bed
with a towel on her head
saying baby whats the matter
he runs into the room
he's babbling like a lunatic, madder than a hatter
well someone at the bank made a big mistake
to the tune of four million bills
I know business isn't great,
our relationship's fading
but things just got much better.
a decimal got flipped, or the teller made a slip
- got careless with a zero.
she says we better play it smart,
or this thing's a non-starter
let's sleep on it til tomorrow
with her hand on her hips and a curl of her lips
she had a kinda dangerous look;
he says I haven't seen that smile now for quite a long while
but I really think it suits ya
i see you're going the wrong way
i see you're going the wrong way
plain as day you're going the wrong way
I'm coming too.
NExt morning first thing,
they check out the ATM,
they weren't dreaming… it's a windfall
she runs off to a shop that sells recycled clothes
then its lunchtime at mcdonalds.
blows right thru the limit on an all-day spree
you can laugh if you have to laugh
but rich equals free
and freedom merely means
you can do just what you wanna
back home he's at the screen with a serious mien
saying hon I've been researching
we can wash most of this cash into poker chips
at a big Macau casino
a few more clicks net some airline tix
they're heading off to China today
holding hands in first class hearts beating so fast
man they don't what they're doing
just like anyone else would do
just like anyone else
end of the song, it wasn't very long before the racket was discovered
I heard they split up and he's somewhere in Hong Kong
and the funds were not recovered.
She's back at home, now she's living alone &
spending lots of time with her lawyer
you can still catch a glimpse of that dangerous smile
if you look a little closer

The more I listen to your work I'm recognizing a style ... kind of pop but not ... ... Ray Davies, Kinks a little .. .always interesting chord progressions. That bridge is real nice ... like the changes in there. Great lyrics and story and just a well crafted tune.
Cheers

Dripping cool from beginning to end! Great story told through song. Infectious melody! Great changes! I'm hearing hints of early Joe Jackson again (so cool you can do that). I love how you built the arrangement from your clear and rock solid acoustic playing. Must have for the expanding Relic collection! Downloaded!

I haven't really listened to JJ in years, but I should go back to it.
I did spend some time trying to learn some of his tunes in my younger days, so I'm sure the influence is there...
Really appreciate that you listened and commented!

the lyrics weren't too difficult as I just wrote down a few details from the news stories and then tried to make 'em rhyme... Very glad you liked and thanks for commenting!

Nicely done- Great vibe
Actually kinda reminds me of MJer's Tempie and Lennon 714. Really enjoyed this tune. The change was way too cool.

I wish more were like this around here. Long live Relic.

glad you liked, I was getting tired of stream-of-consciousness navel-gazing.
The story-type song was somewhat inspired by listening to Bruce Springsteen's "nebraska" in my car...
many thanks for listening and leaving a comment!

the annals of true crime
man the coolest thing about this is the chorus, I wasn't expecting that change at all. The verse is swinging relic garage pop and it's all good but the first two measures of the chorus are such a sweet change. Love it. also dig that little break with the almost latin percussion (I'd have put horns in there lol). I like it when you go off the rails. Acoustic sounds great, too.

glad you liked it, unexpected chorus is probably due to my excessively linear approach to constructing a song: when a new section is needed, the first riff that I can come up with that is halfway decent sounding GOES RIGHT IN THERE!! Doesn't matter if it fits LOL.

Man, I was thinking about throwing glockenspiels, handclaps and everything else on the chorus, but I thought I should exercise some restraint so it wouldn't sound like I worked too hard! but see 4 comments up. Many thanks for checking it out!

Strong story telling and imagery in the lyric. Acoustic guitar sounds great. I like the vocals, the melody goes interesting places. I agree with the Joe Jackson reference. All the tracks are standing out in the mix.

nice
good choice doing this with the acoustic guitar (sounds beautiful BTW). care to elaborate on the recording technique? like your vocal delivery and the harmonies, almost like an Alex Chilton track. very cool.

Many thanks Michael2. Recording technique pretty simple, acoustic guitar (Guild) recorded through Shure KSM27 -->Apogee Duet, doubled + panned slightly right and left. I used Shure dynamic mic for vocals on this one. Bass through Guitar Rig - although I'm never happy with the bass sound straight into the audio interface, probably going to start trying to mic the amp instead. Drums were tapped into Addictive drums with the keyboard. I also used Slate Digital virtual console and the Slate Digital Mastering program (can't remember what it's called) plus Ozone 5 for reverb and a bit of Eq, although I don't know what I'm doing with EQ.
Happy to be compared to Chilton, although he wouldn't have done the geeky story song concept.
Glad you liked and thanks for commenting!

the vocal melody
is reminiscent of Boston's "Peace Of Mind," but with a more acoustic, bluesy feel. Cool.

Great stuff
Like a missing track from Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Just puts me in a Tweedy vibe right from the off. I love the slightly "room" production you get on both the acoustic and your voice. Backups are really strong as I would expect and all round a top tune. Craig's right, that chorus jumps in and just owns its own space. Top Relic tune.
