The Spirit Lives On - by Catherine_B

Description
This piece is composed by my wife. Catherine actually doesn't play an instrument now, but she is an interested listener and quite often she has interesting melody ideas too, but most of the time, they unfortunately vanish by the time we can work them out. This song consists of several different themes she came up with. She then recorded these melodies so that we could bind them together into a single piece.

So I started working, using these themes, but putting them all together has been quite a challenge for me. As those ideas came at different times, they followed different measures. So while I was consolidating them, I ended up with a piece starting in 6/8, then following 2/4, 4/4, and 5/4 measures and passing constantly from one to another.

I wanted to follow as much as possible the original ideas so I tried to transcribe all these ideas without any change or transformation.

Then I continued working on the arrangement. As the violins play the main themes, cello, viola, horns, flute, percussions and piano build up the accompaniment.

I also tried to apply some new knowledge I got recently about mixing and mastering. On that chapter, I'd very much appreciate feedback. Please put the bar high and don't hesitate to give me feedback openly about where the improvements can be made on that aspect.

Many thanks for your visit, and I hope you enjoy this piece composed by Catherine.

sounds good to me as a whole except i wouldn't mind hearing the plucked strings on the left just a hair louder (starting ~:43). when it switches to bowed, the vol is perfect, but the 'plucks' could use a touch more "something." I'm talking 'hairs' here.

Very sweet melodies
and fine variations on them. The main theme certainly calls for lyrics. I do agree that the pizzicato could be more prominent.

How fortunate you are to be able to collaborate on music with your wife Catherine Yves. My wife is an artist and we have much in common but when it comes to music while she is a sympathetic and helpful listener we don't collaborate.
My best to both of you and thanks for this wonderful piece.

Really nice
Really enjoyed this piece. I thought the main themes and the variations thereof were all beautifully written, arranged and performed. Extremely pleasant.

From a mix perspective, I would say that the lead instruments are a touch too relentless throughout the piece. As such, it is sometimes hard to listen past the lead instrument and enjoy the richness of the full piece.

I'm also not getting a tremendous sense of depth. Everything is confined to a relatively small space it feels like. Various techniques such as compression and perhaps a couple types of reverbs on individual instruments and sections can help deepen the overall sound.

Overall, it's quite beautiful. Great job both to you, and to your wife.

Thank you so much
for your insightful feedback. I think you're right about the lead line overwhelming a bit. Also, regarding the depth, I had this point in mind, more than when I worked on my previous songs but it's indeed still a new subject to me. More practice needed :-)

Thank you very much again, I really appreciate your feedback.

Lovely piece! Although you probably deserve more credit for the arrangement and orchestration than you're giving yourself. I think your mix and master are excellent. I've never tried to mix an orchestra. I can only imagine how difficult it is.

Hey Andrew
Thank you for your constant support. One particular advantage I personally find with the VST's that, they sound somehow "cleaner" than live audio recording, in that sense, some things were to my advantage.

Many thanks for taking your time to listen and comment.

Wow ... love love love it !!
First of all the melody really moves me !! I love this song and think both you and Catherine did an amazing job!! Mixing wise (maybe a little intern speaking here ha ha) you've used the pan correctly and the overall sound is great!! Yes, perhaps you could've leveled the lead instruments a bit to bring out the fills a bit more and also perhaps used a little more reverb to create more depth as someone else is mentioning.. BUT this is really up to the individual mixing engineer ;) You did a great job! Keep it up - love Heidi

Thanks
for the heads up on this one. I enjoyed this piece. Pleasant sounds and integration of the different instruments. Everything seems to work well with the melodies, builds and themes.

Mixing and mastering: As I'm not well versed into what it takes to mix orchestrated music I don't have much to say, but to my ears it seems like you were going for a very real "live" recording feel as far as how all the instruments were placed and panned, so in that case it sounds good. I would echo what others have said here about the mix needing more depth, especially the plucking sounds and also toning down the main strings, perhaps a horn section could take up a version of the main melody to break things up a bit. In any case, it's always nice to hear you write music in keeping with your screen name :)

Sorry I'm late for this beautiful arrangement. The piano, the orchestration really touched me this morning ... hats of to Catherine and her bits of humming which goes to show you don't need to play an instrument to create but you do to bring it to life. Well done!!

The Spirit Loves On
Hi Yves and Catherine. Congratulations on a fine piece of music. It has emotion and a sense of timelessness that translates very well to the listener. The tempo transitions are seamless and the whole piece has a feel of coherence. You have done a fine job of drawing the melody lines together, Yves. Mix wise, I agree that a greater sense of depth would open the arrangement up more, but I have no idea how you would do it :-) Thanks, Peter.

I like
The pizzacato right where it is thank you. Any higher and it might have gotten a bit new-agey instead of adding nicely to the piece. I agree that the bow transition is really nice as well. Beautiful melody overall, and the sense of melancholy moving to some sort of soaring triumph is rather moving.

My 2 cents:
1. The themes you are playing with are very nice, indeed.
2. Can you expand them with some further melodic development? they become awfully repetitious after the 4th or 5th pass.
3. if you varied the instrumental choir for the leads, that could alleviate the repetitious nature of the piece, too.
4. Sometimes it's just a quick transposition up or down that can infuse life into a piece with a specific theme like this one. You might consider trying that technique.
5. The recording needs much broader panning and a definite dollop of reverb or ambience. Instruments are too "close" here and need some distance and breathing room.

it is wonderful that you've captured such lovely tunes and have started to blend them into a viable and pleasant musical composition.

Wow!
Fantastic! I would like the section starting at 150 to be as loud and dramatic as you dare. Once that section ends at about 206, I would drop the volume as low as realistic- maybe even a hesitation before proceeding to have it build again. Would add to the drama. Majestic!

A fine collaboration.
It's not fair to credit this to one or other of you by the description, it's a collaboration! And a fine one too. I'd lower the reverb slightly to bring the instruments forward a little, and maybe lower the note velocities too, raising track volumes to compensate if need be. The plucked strings need to be softened in this way at least, or maybe you need better samples. They seem as if they are being plucked extremely hard, something that isn't done for real very often.

None of this detracts much from the fine melodies and the detailed and solid arrangement.

Hi F.A.
Thank you so much for your time to check this piece and for your insightful comments. Indeed, I find some of the expressions quite harsh on the sample library I use (staccato is another one which sounds quite loud to me). Indeed, a lot of playing on the velocities is needed, I'm trying to get better used to that.

Many thanks again for your supportive comment.

Try the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra.
Google will help you find it; it's a free sound-font collection and provides almost a whole symphony orchestra at fairly high quality. I used it on my pieces "Prelude to Battle" and "This Pleasant Land" and others. On the "Prelude to Battle" page are links to more information in case you aren't sure whether to get it or need a Mac plug-in to help your software read "SFZ" sound-fonts.

wow
I think this is very pretty. I hesitate to comment on the mix as I can only listen in the headphones. But readingsome of the comments about the theme, another way to change ot up a little would be to have a completely different instrument play the theme, say an oboe or contra bassoon. But it really is fantastic the way it is.
