Let's Choose Today - Glastonbury 2012

Description
This song is in the style of Fairport Convention, an English Folk/Rock band who played at Glastonbury at some stage (although maybe not the first year?) Acoustic guitars, plus flute and violin sounds that were generated using my new toy - a You Rock Guitar 1000 MIDI controller.

I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics
Let's Choose Today

Verse 1
We’ve just been talking ’bout how things have changed
As we look at each other and smile
But should we be cautious about any plans
Should we just wait for a while?

There’s dangers and perils we’ll meet on the way
So should we walk slowly, take care
Can we choose tomorrow to start living life
Do we need time to prepare?

Chorus
Let’s choose today, Let’s choose today
In all that’s uncertain and through all the fears
Don’t wait a moment, a day or a year
Let’s choose today

Verse 2
I see in the news that the streets are on fire
And so much of life is unknown
There’s poisons in food and the air isn’t clean
And madmen with guns on the roam

How long does it take for our love to emerge
So we both can see it is real
It may be a week or a year or a life
But right now we know how we feel, so

Chorus
Let’s choose today, Let’s choose today
In all that’s uncertain and through all the fears
Don’t wait a moment, a day or a year
Let’s choose today

Bridge
Yesterday’s over, tomorrow’s a gift
The leaves on the tress start to fall
The past is a memory, the future unknown
And life gives just once chance to all, so

Let’s choose today, Let’s choose today
In all that’s uncertain and through all the fears
Don’t wait a moment, a day or a year
Let’s choose today.

You Rock Philip!
Very nicely done Philip.

Lovely playing and wonderfully gentle set of lyrics.

I have a YRG but haven't really used it yet so it's good to hear one.

Cheers

I appreciate the comments, Dick. I think I might get a bit of use out of the YRG - I much better with a fretboard than I am with a keyboard and I'm enjoying playing with the Garageband software instruments.

Really fine contribution to Glasto
I love Fairport and you worked the realm in a really nice way. The midi flute is pretty amazing.

I appreciate the comments on the song! The flute is called Boldt Clavinova Panflute and comes from a collection made available by Ben Boldt - not sure that it's still around. He had a 24-pack with some good sounds in it.

Glad you enjoyed it, Heidi. I did try when fiddling with this song to transform the vocal harmony into a female voice, but it sounded pretty bad so I gave up - I should have asked you!

Love Fairport!
I really enjoyed this tune.
Simple and catchy melody on the flute.
Is everything played on your MIDI guitar?
Well done Philip!

Thanks
I appreciate the comments! Re the MIDI, I used it just for the flute and the violin - all the rest are real guitars (2 tracks of the Maton steel string doing the finger-picking, the Gibson nylon doing lead lines) and a real bass.

As always, thanks for the comments, Andrew. I sort of have you to thank (or blame?) for the You Rock Guitar - I started investigating it after I heard your work with a guitar midi controller on Billy Grogan's Goat! I'll try not to get too carried away with it and not get my aspirations confused with my talent. But it does help to add a bit of colour here and there!

Message
Lovely music. The flute adds a --- dare I say --- lilting(?) quality. The message is apropos the modern world. One minor nit -- the poison and guns and smog seem out of place. The line "In all that’s uncertain and through all the fears" conveys the point, but leaves it vague enough that we can nod our heads and say "yeah." But what do I know? I'm not a lyricist. Very nice work, as always, sir.

Thanks
Thanks for the comment, Les. You make an interesting point about the lyrics, and I suppose it gets back to whether you want to make a point and be specific, or let the listener's imagination do more of the work. There's a point of view that when describing something, it's better to be specific (say "a blue wren" rather than "a little bird") but it all depends on the author's intent, I suppose. Anyway, you've given me food for thought - thanks!

Cool the way the flute sound hooks up with the rest of the guitar tracks. Choose today is a good hook. Gentle vocal works well with the rest of the song.

Folk rock
Very pleasant tune, with that 3/4 time lilt and all.

The flute sounds a bit like a pan pipe, and the violin like a cello, but we'll let that slide. It's all cool, and definitely nifty that you can do that with a guitar controller.

Glad you enjoyed it, Vic. The two instrument sounds are from the Ben Boldt collection. One is called Boldt Clavinova Panflute, the other Boldt violin. I think with all these sort of sounds their description doesn't always tell you what to expect. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Philip. Nice positive message delivered with the folk vibe you were looking for. The YRG has certainly opened up some new color palletes to work with. I like the Boldt PanFlute sound a lot. It sounds like it might be a very usefull tool. We are almost at the end of our travels and the thing I am looking forward to most, apart from seeing our family and friends of course, is to get some quality time with my guitars again. I have missed them a lot. Talks soon, Peter.

Philip,
So sorry I'm so late on such a fine tune. I have not been around MJ ... work and life is getting hectic. But enough about me ... lovely guitar playing in this and the flute is a nice touch... and the violin. Works because it's subtle and not over done ... if I had a new toy like that it would be over done LOL. Great performance and I always like your vocals.
Cheers

idyllic
and perfect

yes, there were bad things happening back then, and of course, still right now. but the human spirit seems to find joy in each day, given the chance. this song really seems to capture that idea. i still want to believe in this dream. it can be real, it can happen, we just need to choose.

thanks

Beautifully performed folk song
I like the very gentle nature of this performance, both vocally and instrumentally. The vocal comes through quite clearly, the story telling thus becoming something worth listening to carefully. ... I had to turn my volume control up quite a bit to really hear this. I wonder if it's mixed a little too quietly. ... I like the peacefulness of this lovely song.
