Lyrics
O say can you see
by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed
at the twilight's last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars
through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched,
were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there;

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?

1814 Francis Scott Key

Patriot
I always love American patriotic music. This is as good a rendition as I've heard anywhere.

Ya know...
I was enjoying this and thinking, "He gonna burst a blood vessel on the high notes", but you did great Smokey! This is a perfectly fine, respectable and GOOD version of our anthem (and as you know, it was originally an old British drinking song or something to that effect!) I thank you sang it very well (I do hate the pop singers that add their little unnecessary obbligatos and runs) and I want to hear you perform this at the next Super Bowl. Michael

hey thanks! the range on this song is ridiculous. i could barely hit the low notes and the high notes - i shifted the key around trying to find a happy balance, but man, oh man, this is a tough song to sing

Hey Chief great job...
This song is a killer to have to relate, now I won't nit-pick your phrasing, but suggest Rocco Scotty's version as a place to get ideas.
Congratulations!

maybe i need to drink a bunch of whisky and record myself really belting it out? i rather dislike gratuitous coloratura, so i went pretty plain here on the melody itself (although i considered fooling around with singing the word "banner"). i had some issues getting the tempo right at the end. it just seemed a little rushed no matter what i tried...

Rocco Scotti is way, way out of my league! i doubt i'll ever get there. but that's OK

thanks

This beats all those
glottal stopping octave hopping divas hands down. Sounds just the way it was intended to in my book. Great job Smokey.

pinkerton or sullivan next?
the land of the brave indeed... a technically difficult song to sing, and you succeeded with flying colors. such a feat would leave me red, white, blue, and gasping for breath. bravo! what new surprises from bill wait in the wings... puccini perhaps?

Very cool.
I was curious to see if there were any other version of the National Anthem here at MJ and found there were several, but I think this is the only one that's not an instrumental (I may be wrong. Don't know that I found them all).

You're a brave man for actually singing this one. It's tough. But you did a great job with it.

Still, you should have done all four verses. ;)
