Description
I never make up tunes with a vocal part in mind --- not that I have anything against singing or singers, of course. If I could sing, I would. A few months ago I posted Verbing Common Noun here at MJ. Although "Verbing" had no obvious place for a vocal part, sammydix asked if he could add vocals to the track, with the language theme left intact (!). I said, "Are you kidding?! That would be great!" But I said to myself, "Yeah, right. No bloody way that anyone can sing about verbs and nouns to this mess." Well, surprise. A few days later, he sent me a completed, lyrically rich vocal track, which was far beyond anything that I might have expected. Thou shalt not underestimate SammyD.

Sam's work on this reprise raised the bar on the original arrangement, and it was a challenge to bring everything together. Thanks, Sam. Not only was it great fun, but it was a real learning experience.

Lyrics
It's just a lack of it
Communication
Finalized, and I've only myself to blame
All the languages
Foreign to my ears
Don't understand
It's like verbing for nouns

I refuse to hear what you'd have me believe

Architecting strange words
Aligned as I transition sane

Don't try to guilt me into thinking a strange phrase
If I refuse, you have only yourself to blame

I refuse to hear what you'd have me believe

Don't want to be one who won't suffer
And that's why I close it off

Verbs from common nouns or words, verbs?
Words from common nouns or verbs, words?

Don't want to be here
Tasked with your verbing
Words flowing deeper
Confusion

Here I am with you right here

When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
I'd rather crush it
When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
Or I will crush it
When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
Or I will crush it

… in the eyes

It's an effort to climb from the pits
Of a language that twists you around like a beetle
It's so tempting to guilt me into it
There's nothing left to discern
So I close it off

Verbing common nouns
Turning me around
Forget rationale
Like cigarettes, ice cream

Ice cream (mmmm)

I survive … ohhh … ahhh

Let me be
Leave me be
Leave me
Hanging on

Too many articles are tumbling slowly
Too many people rhyming
Words flowing on and on and on
Like racing waterfalls
But no one stops to see them
In ways unique to themselves
But still, I feel ….

Leave me behind

All I can do is run until I'm impacted
If you agree you can follow me
(Leave me behind)
I look for something further than verbing for words
Like maybe a fantasy lover

Architecting strange words
Aligned as I transition insane

I refuse to hear what you'd have me believe

Words, common words
Verbs, common verbs
Words, verbs … CRUSH IT

When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
I'd rather crush it
When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
Or I will crush it
When you say that mutha, look me in the eyes
Or I will crush it

… in the eyes

i just re-read those lyrics and laughed my ass off in places. must have been drugged or something at the time! the song had so many passages, that i had to keep coming up with something for each one, so i ended up with a damned novel. i verbed so many common nouns my head's spinning. loved every minute of it.

Hi Mike
A journey. Yeah, I think it is too. A journey through strange and varied lands. It could been about twice as long, but I barely have the guts to post something this long. Anyway, nice of you to say so. Much appreciation.

Hi Harald
We did some architecting I would say. It's a bit fancy, but may wobble somewhat over its hasty foundation. Yours is a fine compliment. It comes from a musician who is a master architect. Thank you, sir.

Sam is that and more. I'm still blown away by his work. Like I told him, with some cut and paste, there are probably about five different tunes that could be made with his single vocal track. It was complicated. Yes, indeed. But good fun, nevertheless.

progressive matching. Wild, weird and wonderful, you guys got more vibes going than I can cope with. My mind could not conceive such imagination, creative juices oozing out of every corner. Les, you sure made the perfect backing track here mate, stunning.... The bite of the guitars are sounding so cool, we require more of this material please!

Steve
Thanks m8. Sam knocked the thing up a couple of notches. I made quite a few changes, while trying not to totally obliterate the original. A challenge. I still don't like the guitar sound. I tried to change it but nothing seemed to satisfy. Changes were too jolting, and the overall mix got muddied up. So, I just left the sound the way it was. I would have preferred a more ... let's say ... ballsy sound, but it just wasn't happening. Anyway, thanks for the very nice words. Gratifying.

Les, you produce prog par excellence and once again Sam shows that he is the master of all styles of music by producing an amazing lyrical and vocal feast. This just blows me away with its power and mood changes, you guys. Amazing! Epic! Thanks, Peter.

Master of styles
An apt characterization. He is that. I was afraid (at one point) that there were too many changes, too many moods. I would spend some time working on it, then when I listened the next day, it sounded too jarring. But I didn't want to make up new segues, since it was already pushing 9 minutes. I eventually got used to it, but I can imagine that there is a sense of abruptness scattered throughout. Anyway, thanks for the nice words. Very nice.

Parichayaka said 1751 days ago (September 6th, 2012)
Totally sounds like
a more positive, sunny version of 'Faith No More's Midlife Crisis! And that's not even a small feat, musically. I like sunny much more than dark, and is there even a sense of humor in there too (ice cream!)? Drum programming and guitar is amazingly precise and inventive. Vocals fit perfectly - love the multiple vocal tracks!

Not my genre, but a great and elaborate track that has enough punch and finesse to actually pull off 'great and elaborate' I can always appreciate. Did scare me a bit towards the end though...thankfully I was done with my comment before you 'crush it' :)

Hi, Pari
I wasn't familiar with Midlife Crisis. But I went and listened to it on Youtube, Yes, I see what you mean. Good call. Personally, I like the darker side of things a little more, although this one is lighter than usual. I am familiar with your (excellent) work, and I know this isn't your kinda thing. So, that makes me doubly appreciative that you would take the time to listen and write cogent comments. Very much appreciated.

"Architecting strange words Aligned as I transition sane". Cool the way this plays with language - it's like a Lewis Carroll or Samuel R. Delaney thing. Works great over LK's stellar track.

Loved this so much!
Sammy's vocals reminded me of Kings X or Fishbone, even some Mike Patton.
The guitars sounded great, reminded me of Metallica or Faith No More (Angel Dust album).
I don't mean to compare this to other bands or albums, just trying to give it the highest of compliments. :D
cheers to you both!

This takes on a whole different vibe with the vocals ... Sammy you blow me away with your talent for words and vocals. This is such a progressive tune, well played composed and the vocals take it to a whole new level. Les, love that bass! Guitar playing not too bad either LOL.

Thanks for the comment, FE. The lyrics are definitely insane hahaha. Dream Theater --- I've heard that comparison before, but I don't really get it. I would NEVER try to work in DT territory. They are on a completely different level that I can only Dream about. But I do like Sam's singing better than LaBrie's.

This is bloody great. I knew it would be. It sounds like it was written to be like this all along. So many great bits. Prog for the eleventies, only without the embarrassing lyrics. I would say I'm speechless, but I'm obviously not. I look forward to the 25 - minute version! Seriously, Les and Sam.
