Thousand Mile Stare

Description
I wrote and recorded this in about 48 hours. I had actually sat at the computer to tidy up some other songs but when I picked up my Melody Maker LP, this kinda happened. It's a bit of a confessional, maybe sometimes I'm a bit too close to home, but it fits my mood and I'm pleased with the results. I've been working on using two guitars, one either side of the stereo picture, for some time, and i've also settled on two distinct amp setups for his which I tend to use all the time. This is another song with that same setup. No matter how hard i try I can't find room for anything other than guitars in my music these days...
I've worked hard on the vocals here. I've found that in order to do effective doubled vox I need at least 10 - 12 tries at each track. It gets quite tiring and my voice is suffering as a result. There's a version of this at Soundcloud and on my Reverbnation page (under The Cardinal Sins) but this is slightly tweaked as a result of comments from Tempie (Craig Thomas).

Lyrics
Trouble teems on Venice Beach
Now your heart is out of reach
Every action that i take is only half way helping

You're crashing on a broken shore
Telling me that you want more
But all the time you're standing half way out to sea

The truth is only half the lie
I cant allow this thing to die
I know I'm always throwing you a curve ball

But when you close and lock the door
I'll be here lying on the floor
I'l never walk away whatever happens

Cos your thousand mile stare
Your thousand mile stare
Won't hold me back

I cast my soul into the sea
Hoping that you'll come to me
Under stars that shine like burning accusation

Every time I push you back
I manufacture the attack
But every heartbeat that I make beings to you

When I'm picking up the pieces
Of all the things that I have broken
I can't look you in the eye
Then I sneak a look right at you

and see you in that light…

Thousand Mile Stare
Judging from the sound you're getting you don't need anything other than guitars. Download!

I like that you are creating signature band sound
through limiting your choices. It's paying off. The songs are strong and the performances are really focused. Excellent tune.

wow
too close to home equals "great song" in this case!
I love the guitar sound, tightly integrated instruments (which loosen up a bit on the bridge for a nice contrast), and the cool vocal melody.
Your vocals are sounding better on every track and are impressive indeed on this one. Your efforts putting the vox trax together paid off well.
Another good one Paddy!!

sweet
38 special. Loverboy. Straight up 80's rock and roll. Love it. Your vocals kill on this. This is a summer driving song. It's kind of sad but it's sad in a 'falling forward' kind of way. It's determined regardless. My favorite Paddy tune. (also dig the bridge - it reminds me a lot of soul asylum and it's a cool change)

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
