Description
I will remember the last time I spoke with Jerry Quinn for as long as I have a memory. I hadn’t seen him in a few weeks. I knew he was growing weaker. He had told me as much during a recent phone conversation. I sat in the chair next to his bed in the hospice and asked, “What have you been up to?”

He responded, “I’ve been planning my next life.”

At first I thought he might be giving me some well-deserved sarcasm. I mean it was a rather ridiculous question to ask a person in that circumstance. Turns out he was serious. “What’s the plan?” I asked.

He proceeded to tell me in great detail how he’d like to live on a farm, grow his own food, and live off of the grid. At first I was confused. Was the cancer playing tricks with his mind? Were medications intended to keep him comfortable blurring the lines between reality, fantasy, memories, and dreams? But he would also say things like, “I can feel the cancer growing,” and “I feel the end is close.” So I knew he was aware of where he was and what was happening to him.

At one point I asked him if he could see the other side. He said, “No, I can’t see it yet.”
He laughed when I replied, “Damn! I was hoping to get some inside info.”

Then he abruptly changed the subject and asked, “Did I show you my boat?” He opened up his laptop and went to a webpage full of pictures displaying several beautiful wooden sailboats. He pointed to one and said, “I call her the Bay Rose.” He went on to tell me about going to boat shows with his brother when they were younger. I asked if there was water on the farm. He told me it would be near the coast.

Next he told me about going fishing, catching sea bass, cleaning them, and how he would cook them. He even told me what he would do with the leftovers. Jerry loved food and loved to cook. Even when he was in the hospital unable to eat solid food, he would still watch the food channel. It always surprised me he didn’t find that rather torturous.

During that final conversation about farms, boats, and fishing he kept coming back to how he would have a lot to do to get things ready for the day when his wife would join him on that beautiful little farm. Then the picture would be perfect.

In the end I realized Jerry remained a hopeful person to the last. Even after cancer had taken so much from him. The farm, boat, and days spent fishing were what he hoped he would find in his afterlife. I sure hope that’s just what my friend found.

(Edit) Jerry's wife Cathy passed away on July 31, 2013. Now she is with Jerry on the farm and sailing on the Bay Rose.

Lyrics
Until You Join Me There
Words & Music by alackbass

Time to plan my next life,
Say goodbye to the old,
Got to follow the bright light,
From this darkness and cold,
Gonna find me a farm,
Gonna grow my own food,
Living off of the grid,
In a world of solitude,

Did I show you my boat?
I call her the Bay Rose,
I'll spend my free time sailing,
Where? God only knows,
Feel the breeze in my hair,
Feel the sun upon my face,
I can't see it yet,
But I know it's a better place,

I have to get ready,
I have to be prepared,
I have to make things perfect,
For when you join me there,
It might be a long while,
Just how long I don't care,
I'll just keep a light on,
Until you join me there,

Not sure where I'm going,
But I know I'll have to go,
In some things,
We just don't have a say,
But in a quiet moment,
I picture how it'll be,
It's all I ask for,
When I start to pray,

Yesterday I went fishing,
They were biting real good,
Brought my catch up to the porch,
And got them ready to cook,
Just a bit of lemon,
And some garlic too,
There was enough left over,
For a tasty fish stew,

I have to get ready,
I have to be prepared,
I have to make things perfect,
For when you join me there,
It might be a long while,
Just how long I don't care,
I'll just keep a light on,
Until you join me there,
I'll just keep a light on,
Until you join me there,

Not easy to write and perfrom this, Andrew, but what a wonderful tribute you have created. A lot of very good writing is in effect getting down what you hear, what you see, what you feel. What you have done here is stunning. It is both personal and universal. Of course, the music is exceptional, too. The approach is perfect for the subject matter. Be proud of this one Andrew - no doubt Gerry would be!

Actually it was quite easy. Jerry really should get a writer's credit. During much of it I'm literally just quoting him or paraphrasing things he said to me during that last visit. Regarding the melody and changes I tried to keep it simple and in a style similar to how Jerry would write.

Thanks so much for listening and the kind comments.

It is quite apparent to all of us, Andrew, that you have lost a loved one. The depth of your feeling shows in the words and music -- and your delivery -- as well as in this song description and all of the other posts you have made about your friend Jerry. Even the title speaks volumes.

Gerry is there Andrew.... though true, it's a lovely story, but also what strikes me is how people find that extra strength of mind when the end is coming..... nice performance you've done with this, not sad, but uplifting song you (excuse the word) 'Lifted' from what Gerry told you in his final days and I'm sure he's pleased with the song and tapping his toes along with it...... very enjoyable performance (guitar sounds great), regards M

This piece is personal and full of hope Andrew.
And I've been reflecting on this subject quite a bit lately. Yves and I tried to help Laurie put together a medely of her father's favorite songs sung by her with some sax and us helping. Her father was a huge fan of her voice and music and her sax playing. We did get a finished medely, but alas it was not in time for this side. She just emailed me telling me she was here in MI planning his funeral, and that he battled until the end. These gestures and this sharing of beloved music and time spent together is bigger than we realize, for after we are gone, what is left is how you treated people and the love and relationships that were developed. Our lives are touched by others, and we touch others with our friendship, love and music. And since the music celebrates these truths, we come to realize just how poiniant the music and the relationships are. Song lyrics mirror life, and there really is the essence of life. it is a sad thing that we will miss the onew we love when they are gone, but it is a happy thing that the time was spent in good fellowship, and so lingers for a long time these memories and representation in melody. I used to consider music and lyrics cliche. The close I get to my own mortality, the more i realize they are at the heart of human kind. it is much bigger than we realize early on. So I feel like I will be leaving a musical legacy with my music, both for family and my beloved friends as well. I can say the same about yourself Andrew. You seem to grasp that these deep friendships and family love can be put into song for safe keeping. For me music is medicine. It sooths my soul. I've come to realize that is true of yourself as well. So for me, I care not if it gets marketed, or if I get a ton of comments. Sure it's nice if others acknowledge what we've done, but it's served it's purpose already. Just as Jerry's and Laurie's father's lives have served them. Our main purpose here is to procreate and then teach them how to survive. Part of that is to embrace and celebrate love and relationships. I've often though that music is so amazingly important and is a gift, because it can serve to remind us of what is and was important. it truely is a gift. A gift that you've learned to use just how it's meant to be used. To celebrate and remind us all of what is important. Jerry was important. Your friendship was important. Your music is important. I was touched by this piece of your history. it will be here long after you've left this side.

Powerful work Andrew
One of my big regrets was not being able to talk openly with my first wife when she was dying of cancer. I was younger then and learnt the hard way. I'm so pleased you had that conversation with Jerry. I'm sure it was as important to him as it was to you.

A wonderful song that embodies hope yet embraces acceptance of the end. Beautifully written and performed.

Cheers

Classic AM Radio Storytelling
This is a really terrific song even without the touching back story. I would would argue that I remember this blasting on my favorite red white and blue transistor radio just moments before I poked my eye out with the antenna. What I mean is this would've been just after a Jim Croce tune.

I love that you were able to "cowrite" this great story and put it all together in such a simple sounding performance. It adds to the charm of the song. Guitar, vocals and Jerry's story.

Thanks Andrew. I'm downloading this and I'll think of you two sitting there chatting every time I hear it.

I hate losing friends, they seem to keep sneaking up on me even after decades have passed.

Did you double track that guitar? Really warm sounding track my friend, thanks for the post.

Boy...
First of all, as I listened I was reminded of this comment of yours to me a couple years ago:

Time Passing Me By-
One day I have to work up the guts to post something this sparse, but only if it can be this good!

Well, my friend... not only as good but way, way better. A complete song with poetic lyrics, masterful guitar picking, and a vocal that drew me into the story.

Talk about triggering things. Barb and I lived on a sailboat for a number of years. We've tended to take the fork in the road in our life together. Of late as we now have hit sixty, we talk about "going off the grid." Our exact phrase. Get a place away from it all, etc.

Sorry about the loss of your friend. What an amazing spirit and attitude he had as he grew weaker. A dreamer? Why not.

blessings,
Jack

by the way...
I just noticed my reply to your comment on "Time Passing Me By." Here it is:

Do it....
I know it'll be a keeper.

-that wasn't hard to predict...

Thanks So Much Jack
Yeah, there was a long period when I wouldn't dare post something so sparse. I worried that all my weaknesses would be exposed for all to hear. But the support of MacJammers (like yourself) and friends like Jerry gave me the strength to give it a try. Thanks for the listen and kind comments. Although I can't really take full credit for the lyrics. Jerry wrote almost every line even if he didn't realize it at the time.

Quality songwriting
Just read all the comments on this one and there's very little to add. A good friends father died yesterday and I think I will send her this song. I guess he's keeping a light on for his wife and by writing this song your keeping a light on for him. Cheers Mark

You have a knack
You sort of have an everyman delivery that is very appealing. Liked this very much.

Thanks jobu
Although I really have to give Jerry most of the "everyman" credit. These were almost his words exactly. Thanks for listening!
