Description
I was invited to sing a duet with Philip Gardner (Philip18) on his song "How Did We Let This Happen?". This song is so beautiful and I was really excited to get on board, cause I absolutely LOVE Philips work and voice! :)

He then came up with the idea of doing a second more acoustic version of the song and this is the result - we really hope you guys enjoy this one :)

You can hear the original version here:

And, I'd like to add a BIG thank you to all of you who left such kind feedback on my voice and on the whole song in generel - I was really happy reading your comments :)

Lyrics
How did we let this happen?
Words and music by Philip Gardner

HIM
It seemed to be so perfect it seemed to be so right
All that we looked forward to at the start of our new life
HER
We thought all our promises would last the length of time
All I’d ever dreamed about at last it would be mine
HIM
I’ve been calling out to you, but now you never hear
HER
All the words I’ve wasted, all the night-time tears

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear a warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

HER
Can’t you see the change in me, the things that fill my mind
You stay who you have always been, I’m leaving you behind
HIM
Was it all the hours away, or the time when I was here?
That turned you into someone else, who didn’t seem to care

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear the warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

And just when things seemed steady, just when things seemed clear
All the things we thought we had, seemed to disappear

Chorus BOTH
How did we let this happen? Did we hear the warning bell?
All the promise of our lives, What was it broke the spell?

Verse chords
D | D | Bm | Bm | G | G | A | A

Chorus chords
G | D | G | D | G G(F#bass) | Em | A | D

How did we let this happen?
Hi Heidi. This arrangement and mix really allows your two voices to take their rightful place in centre stage. The harmonies work really well and Philip's guitars support the fine song wonderfully. Nice spacious mix. Definitely worth the second post. Thanks, Peter.

Peter
Thank you Peter :) I must admit I'm crazy in love with this song and think this version is so fragile and intense in a fantastic way! Philip had lots of ideas how to do this version, it worked out really well I think. Thank you for listening "once more" - love Heidi

Andrew
Thank you Andrew :) This is such a beautiful song and I think Philip is so so talented! He had several ideas to this acoustic version and it came out so good! :) Yes, sometimes less is more.. I love the original version too, but this is more fragile and it certainly brings out my emotions.. thanks again for your sweet words, love Heidi

Duet
Great vocals in both parts. I think it's an inspired idea to not use bass or drums and only get the rhythm from that carpet of guitars. (And the inaudible strings.)

Duet
It can sometimes have a greater impact to go for the "less is more" :)
Thanks for stopping by and for leaving comments, much appreciated. Love Heidi

How Did We Let This Happen?
A good song will work with a number of different arrangements, I think you proven that here. Strong structure, vocals and harmonies, well done.

Stronger that the original in some ways.
Each has it's own strength.
I'm reminded of Sounds of Silence being re-released with drums to be more radio friendly.
