Playground Fight

Description
Hey y'all, it's tempie. Hope you had as bitchin' a summer as I did. Now that my daughter and partner in crime is locked back up in school I have time to finish the songs I started while playing in the sun. This is the first of a five song cycle about, what else, growing up. Imagine, a tempie song about growing up. Crazy!

So this one is about my first playground fight. 3rd grade. Tony somebody. It started out pushing and someone said 'he's gonna hit you!' and he did. Lol should have listened. It turned out to be a kind of draw, but I did well enough to earn some serious respect from the other kids, which in the poor, rural, and mixed race school I attended was a real benefit. But more than that, the experience was a kind of milestone in my self realization. My dad was a high school baseball star and my mom was a national swimming champion. I was asthmatic and flinched whenever somebody threw something to me. To add insult to injury, my grandmother worked at a consignment shop in the ritzy district of another town so my mom dressed me in cast off rich boy clothes. My nickname in elementary school was 'Izod'. I shit you not.

So I realized two very important things from this fight. First, that my body was my friend. It actually knew how to fight. This to me was like discovering a super power. It amazed me. Second, I could use my brain AND my body to be good at a sport. Until this point I consoled myself with the idea that I was smart, so I wasn't good at sports. It made sense. Stupid people got sports, the uncoordinated got brains. Only here I was using both my brain and my body. Together. While I was fighting I remember being amazed that I was calculating arc and speed and probability, all these really cerebral things, and then putting my body to use behind the calculations, like the proof of an equation. And I didn't even have an asthma attack - too much adrenaline, and it happened too fast lol.

So that began a long career in fisticuffs. I found out what it was like to stand over somebody that I'd really hurt and feel that crazy mix of elation at having won and guilt at having won. And I found out what it's like to lie beneath somebody who's just really hurt you and feel that crazy mix of guilt at having let yourself down and shame at having lost and sweet relief that it's over. And then of course what it's like to have your face literally broken, and your nose broken, and what it's like to watch somebody hit you after you've ceased feeling it until their knuckles, one by one, fade to black. And last, and worst, what it's like to get out of the car to teach some neighbor punk a lesson at the local gas station while your wife screams at you for christ's sake you have a daughter and everyone turns and stares at you and the kid gives you a leer and you realize two terrible truths: 1 - you're a kid. you're a 3rd grader on the playground. with a wife and kid. and how will a 3rd grader take care of these people, and be responsible for these people? And 2 - that you have so much more to lose than that punk kid that you will never be able to surmount the discrepancy in fairness to win, that you will always lose. Your fighting days are over.

So there you have it. I still fight, only now it's for fitness and discipline. OK that's a lie. It's also because I enjoy punching, and kicking, and that video game feeling of guessing what your opponent will do before he does it and formulating a response from a bank of options. That slowing things down in the midst of the hurricane. If you want to know what Zen is, you'll find it there.

Musically this tune is a little blue mountain, a little tempie.

Lyrics
better watch it
he's gonna hit you
yep, there he goes
see, I told you
it's a playground fight

he said he heard you
call him a bad word
you don't ever talk
but it don't matter
it's a playground fight

here come the kids they're running to watch
you better win you know how everybody talks

he grabs your shirt and
you feel his mitten
on your cold face
you taste the wool and
it's a playground fight

he's just a dumb kid
you don't want to hit him
but if he starts it
daddy says to finish it
it's a playground fight

Interesting back story, Craig. The days of youth are not quite over, eh. This is a very, very, very, very, very, very fine song. Please don't hit me :-) Regards, Peter.

I like your lower register singing in this. Very tasty laid back groove and guitar fills. Nice moment when the when the organ comes in. Like the space in the arrangement and the long ride out. Cool track, sir.

long ride out
Thanks man, I saw you had a song up yesterday and made mental note to check it out. Of course because I have the attention span of a squirrel I forgot. So now I'm heading right over there. Glad you liked the song. Whenever I do anything laid back I wonder if you'll like it.

Time to stop fighting anyway. You need to take care of those hands to make more great music like this! Downloaded!

hands?
Hands and shins will probably fall off in my seventies. But by that time they'll be advertising robotic eskoskeletons on late night TV. Anyway it's been a long long time since I hit anything/one without gloves. Glad you liked it man. I was talking to Bob the other day about the state of MJ and said 'I don't even see alackbass around, and he commented on everyone's stuff!' So good to see you still around :)

you should see the other guy
great subject matter, I think they expel kids now for what was an everyday occurence back in the day. I well remember the crowds of kids gathering around chanting "fight - fight - fight...." Rather barbaric now that I think about it... I do remember getting in a few of those playground fights too. I should ask my son if it's still going on.
Anyway I like the lyrics, guitar parts, nice tone on the solo, really good singing and melody... just overall well done as usual... always a pleasure to hear a tempie tune. fun to read the liner notes too.

Such a nice sound
Craig, this is the first MJ song I've listened to in ages. I love the low key backing trax behind your very present vocals at the start (althoough I keep waiting for something to come in on the right to balance your voice). No matter - I envy your skill in maintaining a low-key vibe to this. I'm sure I would have lost the vibe by going full tilt at the earliest opportunity. Great words - bring back memories.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

lo key
as i did the guitar i was thinking blue mountain, that front porch kind of sound. if you had an amp on the front porch. i used to want to go full tilt on everything but now i find it easier to do the slow songs. that will probably change again. thanks for taking the time to drop by and listen, I appreciate it. When we head into winter y'all are dusting off the surfboards, right?

Every time someone calls me sir at work I have to resist the urge to laugh like beavis and butthead. I don't think i'll ever be a 'sir'. Glad you liked it Karen and thanks for dropping by! Good to see you still around also. I'm going to hang around for a while and see what's happening.

Oh yes.
What a laid back, engaging performance. I think the folks that dance country would get up and shuffle a bit to this tune. Thanks.

Good thing you smoked all of the weed before recording this. So chill. I believe Weakerthans was the comment. Real life story telling. Your guitar chops are from outer space. I love them.

blue mountain
Now I love this kind of tune where you let the wonderful timbre of your voice carry the song. The sparse verse arangement really puts your tone to the fore. Lovely gentle understated guitar work. A true slice of Americana. I'm loving this new phase of yours.
