Description
I wrenched Summer Emo from PaulaMunk's itty bitty paws. I was asked about how the lyrics would sound if not sung by a chipmunk. The melody had to be changed because Paula would not budge on that point. So, Demeter7 scrounged some loops, acoustic picking and exotic drums and moved them around. She thought she'd get this one but Char hasn't had any songs on her page for awhile so she snuck it past the other two.
I changed the last verse. That was an oddly difficult set of words to sing. I traded that off for trying to match tempo with different loops and I'm not sure that didn't throw me off. I've more respect than ever for those of you that have this stuff down. So, here is version 2 of Summer Emo with a new title but an old singer. It is still Emo but a bit more folky and lot less chipmunky. Thanks for coming by to hear my less than adequate attempt to make music.
Paula's version is here
Now, an Open Collab:
I would love to re-sing to some better guitar. So, if you're interested, please let me know.

Lyrics
I drowned in the summer of my life
And I never was resuscitated
It went down the summer of my life
I lived a lie with a man who hated
>
The seasons come and go
And though I sure have tried
Can't rise up from below
Something inside me died
>
I've seen the dark of a another's soul
And that weighed me down so I can't come back
All the years spent in a deep, dark hole
I forgot how to live; I lost the knack
>
The seasons come and go
And though I sure have tried
Can't rise up from below
Something inside me died
>
There's nothing left for me here, behind
And there's nothing more to look forward to
I cherish the bit of joy I find
But it's never enough to see me through
>
The seasons come and go
And though I sure have tried
Can't rise up from below
Something inside me died
>
If there were hope then, I'd leave this hell
Where there's no love, nor joy nor even light
So, I pray for help to make me well
I'm more than ready to give up the fight
>
The seasons come and go
And though I sure have tried
Can't rise up from below
Something inside me died

Can't rise up
Interesting juxtaposition of your upfront vocal and the sad words. There is great character in the performance - the slight discordance that comes in at times gives f emotional intensity to it. The final note seems chopped - was that intentional? Strong performance, Char - much enjoyed!

You have great ears!
I added a tiny bit of a loop to finish it. Oh, yes, I slaughtered it. I'm a complete hack. The loops are chose had different bpms. I must learn how to adjust that on my next attempt. It was all I could do to make the different parts retain some nice sound and not go flat or off. I wasn't successful. The lazy thing works great for me..post an a capella and someone else has to make the music. I might re-do the song as an a capella without these loops and then delete this mess. I really tried. This is kind of hard when you don't know what you're doing. Thank you, Philip.

I don't think
this will stay up long. I'm embarrassed. Loops don't quite fit well together. There are remnants of the original melody but I think I can craft it better as an a capella without the stress of switching for each section. At least, people get the gist of how it might sound. I do like the lyrics much more with the slight substitution. Thank you.

I prefer
this to the chipmunk version. The lyrics are really powerful and your vocal style suits them. Maybe you could open it up as a collab and get one of the acoustic guitarists here to accompany you. A thought! It's too good to throw away.

You and the "sisters" have been very busy of late, Char :-) The lyrics are pretty dark and introspective and the mixed loops gives the whole song an unsettling effect, which is quite appropriate given the subject matter. Different, yes, but that is good, too. Thanks, Peter.

PaulaMunk said 1727 days ago (October 27th, 2012)
Because I had
to sing differently to match the loops, you betcha it was unsettling. At first, I went all flat, trying to jump. I thought that added to it, as well. It could be better. I could really emote to some better music. Thanks.

DWL said 1728 days ago (October 27th, 2012)
As Peter says
the slightly mismatched loops give this a rather disturbing feel which I think actually works rather well!

The vocals convey a sense of anxiety which again suits the piece perfectly.

All in all, pretty impressive!

Cheers

P'shaw
You're too modest. This sounds like something Stephen Stills might have written and performed back in the 60s --- you know, when he was good. This song, and the guitar bits you chose, suggests a subtlety that gets glossed over a little. That's not a mistake, just that there's much more in there that could be brought out with a little cutting and pasting. Some of the transitions are choice, and the piece would benefit from sitting on them a bit. Needs some space. Just my humble O. Having said that, I think you nailed the guitar loop selections, and they are mixed well. One of your best, undoubtedly.

Char said 1727 days ago (October 27th, 2012)
I was
thinking that I should give myself a tiny space between loops. I don't know if I should split an end of the loop, put it on another track and hit with reverb to carry the notes over to next loop. I gave myself no time for breaths and I think it would be natural to that. Richard told me I can change the bpm of loops, so I'll try that sometime. What I need is a good tailor and a good wallpaperer. Mixing...? So, I need a cook, too? Maybe, I'm getting better or maybe I'm getting more brave. This was a very encouraging critique...you are too good to me. I'll try some stuff on another song. At least Stephen Stills was good, once. Thank you, Les.

I am ....
.. kinda enjoying the disjointed instrumentation on this and think you managed to totally capture this with the alternating vocal tracks .... truly !!!! and think you did a great job on this .... you have come far far babee from the early days .... my only nit is the abrupt ending .... overall it gave me the vibe of those poetry readings in which certain inflections are put on certain words to portray the message .... I think this is great ! It has a new ... edgy quality to it!

It is
messed up but the best I could manage. Yes, I know what you mean about the inflections. You do that well, yourself. I did enjoy singing with the acoustic loops. I couldn't find a loop that ended a song so I stuck a note at the end. There should be ending loops to make it easier for non musicians. I'm hoping this song gets a collaborator. Thanks so much.

Like a Stills number. The folk treatment works well for me - I can almost see the small club with coffee cups on all the wooden tables as patrons nod in time with the chanteuse in the corner. Thank Demeter for her loops too!

i love
the sentiment behind the lyrics- and again, the raw honesty of your vocal is really gripping. The vocal melody works well enough on its own- I don't believe you need to compromise the architecture of the melody or the lyric with loops or with an arrangement that diffuses that energy. Perhaps just a solo cello and violin (as two characters, if you will) - playing in pentatonic blues hues -- with ethereal pads for just a touch of another dimension.
(that otherworldy death, the memory that lingers...) . Of course all this would just be crowning the primary vocal melody.

Do you have an a cappella version of this song ?

Char said 1675 days ago (December 18th, 2012)
You really
understand my problem trying to fit the melody to the loops. I am just awful at that. I could strip away the loops but the messed up vocal would be even more awkward. Best would be for me to sing to something else or nothing, which I am more than willing to do. Would you care to play with this, whenever you have time? And, do you prefer a vocal with no music or a vocal matched to your music? I can do either. No hurry, at all. Thank you very much for your interest.
