Nightmare HALLOWEEN 2012

Description
This is more or less a remake of something I did back in my college days, in 1989. The story behind it:

It was the end of the spring semester, which had been both my best and worst semester in college. I started the semester with pneumonia and ended the semester with a 4.0 GPA on a class load of about 25 hours, while holding down two jobs and taking part in symphonic band and jazz band. And I had almost worked myself into a nervous breakdown.

The original piece was the result of a day playing around with a synthesizer and a Fostex 4-track recorder. It was just voice, piano and strings. No lyrics, just various vocal noises mixed together with lost of reverb and delay and was a very much me working through the stress of the proceeding months.

I decided a couple of months ago it would work well as a Halloween piece, and started reworking it. The beginning is basically the same concept as the beginning of the original, but different. The second section didn't have lyrics originally and was just piano. The arpeggio isn't overly original, but it's effective. And I like it.

And I hope you all like it as well.

Lyrics
Nightmare

©1989(Music), 2012(Lyrics)

The nightmare’s gone
It’s time to sleep
To dream
Eternal dreams

No more fears
To haunt your night
No more ghosts
In your eyes

Don’t you fear
The night ahead
Though it’s
Long and dark

Lay down
Let the earth cover you
And dream the night

Sleep my angel
Sleep my love
Sleep through the years
Until I come for you again

The nightmare’s gone
It’s time to wake
Your sun has set
The dark is here

The spark of life
So fleeting now
Won’t haunt your dreams
again

Love it
This is my favorite time of year and it brings out the scariest music. Liked this a lot. The piano piece in the middle is simple, yet creepy as hell.

Nice job

Ye-agh!
Exceedingly scary. The phantom of the opera wants to share files with you. I like it, too. Thanks.

well done
what a frightening soundscape intro

the heart of the song is beautiful. i like how the meaning of the lyrics takes a left turn at "let the earth cover you". was there a backwards echo in there, or am i imagining things?

well done! thanks

And I like it too
This starts well with no doubt about the mood that gets as thick as a pea soup fog. By the time you come to the part where the piano makes its entry I love the contrast with the previous anxiety producing atmosphere, and then you lead with those powerful lyrics! Kind of like a missing track from Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Alan Parsons but without a drum track.

Nicely done! (and dloaded with thanks)
Doug

Nice
I also have a 4 track fostex as well as a 16 track fostex. Both have been idle for quite sometime now since I made the transition to DAWs. THere is something great about getting that old tape recording feeling. Especially for a track like this.

I loved the composition and overall sound that you've created here. I think this is my fav out of the halloween bunch so far. Loved the piano. Simple construction, but very powerful.

Great vocals and lyrics too.
