Description
Another Alaska/Canada trip inspired song (number 4).

I don't consider myself to be afraid of heights but often when I am very first confronted with the view of a significant drop, especially if I am close to the edge, I get this momentary feeling that something is trying to pull me over.

Luckily, I guess, the left side of my brain quickly tells me how silly this is, and from them on I am OK, even getting quite close without supports/fences, etc. It is an interesting phenomenon.

I also almost always wonder what it would be like to be a bird and fly off the edge off into the distance...

The photo was taken at the top of the gondola at Jasper. It goes up just over 3,000 feet from the base and is quite impressive. The views are spectacular.

This song has been "complete" for a while but every time I listen to it I fiddle with the EQ, or the reverb, or the panning, or the mix levels... It has been driving me nuts, so I just decided to post and be dammed.

Make of it what you will.

All comments welcome.

Thanks,

Peter :-)

Lyrics
The Edge (Capo 1) Peter Bowen: October 2012

Intro riff [C]

[Cadd9] Out in the distance, the mountains are calling
[Am7] They echo with my name
[Cadd9] Here on the edge, my defenses are falling
[Am7] It's always the same
The [F] siren is singing her [G] song
I've a [Em] feeling that something's quite [F] wrong
Will I [F] fly like an eagle or [G] plummet back where I [C] came from?

The clouds are like cotton, they'll cushion my landing
My own carpet ride
Over the valleys, on silver I'm standing
The stars as my guide
Warm currents will carry me high
I'm sailing, embraced by the sky
I hope I don't wake and find it's all just in my mind's eye

And I [G] feel like a [F] bird on the wing
It's [G] surreal, up here with [F] the mountain king
Can I [G] steal frozen [F] moments while drifting [Am] away?
[F] Before I [G] descend and contend with the [C] day.

[Dm] [F] [Am] [G] [Dm] [F] [G] [Am]
[Dm] [F] [Am] [G] [Dm] [F] [G] [G]

[Cadd9] Out in the distance, the mountains still call me
[Am7] They echo with my name
[Cadd9] I’m here on the edge, my resistance is falling
[Am7] It's always the same
The [F] sirens are singing their [G] song
I'm [Em] sensing that something's gone [F] wrong
To [F] fly with the eagles is [G] somewhere that I don't [C] belong

Still I [G] feel like a [F] bird on the wing
It's [G] surreal, up here with [F] the mountain king
Can I [G] steal frozen [F] moments while drifting [Am] away?
And I [G] feel like a [F] bird on the wing
It's [G] surreal, up here with [F] the mountain king
Can I [G] steal frozen [F] moments while drifting [Am] away?

[F] Before I [G] descend and contend with the [C] day.

Outro Riff [C]

A but funny...
Thanks, Andrew. This song was a bit funny. I wrote it and was enjoying singing it as it developed, but then when I recorded it I thought it was pretty bland. I tried to conjure up some proper harmonies for it but they just wouldn't come. In the end, singing sections of it doubled gave it enough life to get it over the line. Take care, Peter.

Had to dig its way out...
Grounded :-) It was almost buried:-) (see above) It dug its way out in the end but it still seems fairly uninspired when compared to the multi-layered goodness of your new post, and Sig's, for example. Thanks for dropping by the back porch and giving it a whirl. Take care, Peter.

Folk song ...
I think I mentioned John Denver on the previous piece in this series. It is an apt comparison, Peter, meant as a big compliment. There is excitement in your lyrics and in your vocal/guitar presentation. (Lovely lead at 2:00, by the way. A perfect opportunity and time to reflect and let the listener just drink it all in.) These songs should accompany your DVD with photos from your across-the-world vacation. This is just such a good song. (Bring up the violins. They will help the tune soar.) Just beautiful.

The well...
Thanks again, Paul, for taking the time to have a listen to my work and comment so thoughtfully and supportively. I'm glad you like this. I have had some doubts (see above). The trip has provided some fine moments of inspiration. I may have to be careful not to draw too deeply from the well, though. I will tweak the synth in the chorus and have a listen. Take care, Peter.

Just
love your playing and singing Peter.... such a natural and oh i do wish i could play guitar like that; fabulous talent........ now those heights have always pulled me too; even railway platforms and anything with an edge, but not the kind of 'edge' you've got over others by singing and playing so pro and competently.... great song and performance and much enjoyed, regards M

Pretty lucky
Thanks, Mo. That style of acoustic guitar accompaniment does just come pretty naturally to me, so I guess I am very lucky to have it as a skill. I appreciate your comments and am glad you enjoyed the song. You aren't too shy in the talent department, either! Take care, Peter.

Second melody line
Thanks, Freddy. It added the second melody vocal when I wasn't really happy about the way the song sounded and I couldn't for the life of me get some harmonies to work well with it. That technique (trick?) always seems to lift a vocal line and add some depth and interest. Glad you liked the song. Talk soon, Peter.

Quit foolin' with the EQ ... it sounds great! Looks like my homeland has inspired you ... ha ... You're on a roll. Your acoustic sounds superb and the vocals are real good. You have really grown as a songwriter and all the hard work has paid off and it shows in your mixes. This is an excellent song ... a touch of Simon and Garfunkel. Fantastic Peter!

Thanks, Philip. Glad you thought it came across OK. Hi Peter.....
This is a beautiful song. The guitar is perfect, enhancing the words and when the other instrument/s come in, it makes this a wonderful experience to sit and listen to.

I too was hooked by Canada but only travelled for a few hours, away from Calgary, so didn't get much beyond Bamff and Sulphur Mountain.

Take care.

Banff
Thanks, Paul. You kind words are much appreciated. Alaska and Canada have some very inspiring scenery. Hopefully I hope I haven't been doing them both a disservice with my song cycle. We had a great trip. Banff was a madhouse when we were there. Sunday tourist mania. But you could still appreciate how pretty it was and want to come back there in winter. Take care, Peter.

Embraced by the sky
I'm not even sure where to start with this one Peter since there is so much I like about your song. First I think you have captured really well the feeling of being in the Rockies and I found I was fully transported to places I have visited there, always with a sense of awe and almost reverence. Your vocals including just the right amount of double tracking or harmony speaks like you're sitting across the camp fire - intimate and true. The solo fits well in the feel of the overall song and is skillfully played, as is the accompaniment. Production quality is very high sir, do your tweaks definitely were getting into the diminishing returns category!

Glad you posted and thank you for allowing dloads.

Cheers from Canada,
Doug

..without bells and whistles
Your comments are very welcome, Doug. If I was able to evoke a modicum of the sense of majesty of the Canadian rockies, I am grateful. I'm glad the sparse arrangement came across OK. Most of my songs this year have been written with singing round the campfire in mind. I am looking for the songs to be able to stand on their own two feet without lots of bells and whistles to get them across the line. Thanks. Kind regards, Peter.

Edge
Love the simplicity of this. Each element is really nicely crafted: guitar and vocal both excellent. Love the spacious and relaxed arrangement.I can feel the air and sun in this. And what a fine vocal performance! I like the double track effect. Sounds like the doubled vocal is auto tuned? Whatever you're doing it works. Lends it a little pop sheen. Definitely a keeper, Peter.

Highly valued
Hi John. Thanks for the kind words. I value your opinion very highly. The doubled vocals came about because I was struggling to find harmonies that worked :-) You are correct, too, I did auto tune up the second vocal part to differentiate it a bit from the main vocal. Glad you liked the song. Take care, Peter.
