Description
So remember when you were 13-15 and trailed along on family trips, those 4 day quickies to some amusement park in some neighboring state. Squashed into the backseat with your cousins or brothers/sisters, luggage stacked to the ceiling, your dad driving past every place you wanted to stop ("oh, sorry, wrong side of the road. Oh, sorry, didn't see the exit until it was too late"). And you're 14 and in misery, caught between affection for your family and a feeling that they're the last people in the world you want to be with. So when your dad hands you a ten, tells you to meet everyone at the gate by 9, and looses you on the amusement park, you head straight to the sky ride to check out the girls. You spot that one that looks right, maybe she's got her sister tagging along, and she looks as bored and desperate as you, and she's all hair sprayed and done up and it won't be for nothing because you memorize where she is and when the ride stops you walk straight to her and ask her where she's from and hey you know somebody who goes to her school and she says she likes the song on the PA and you say yeah me too and you're looking at her and my god it's like she's everything you've ever wanted no needed, you need her the way that those guys in the comic books who find the fountain of youth need to keep drinking that water and they'll do anything to get it, fight Tarzan or whatever, and that's what you're doing, you're drinking her in, the nail polish and lip gloss and makeup and hair spray and tight jeans and the way her earrings sit in the little holes in her ears and you feel yourself getting stronger, bigger than the station wagon that brought you there, bigger than your doubts about yourself and your future, you're starring in your own movie and you take her to the Himalaya, and they're playing Hungry Like the Wolf and you get into the car and she presses up against you and the smell of her just blasts through your skin right into your chest so that you can hardly breathe and she leans in to yell something to you because the music is so loud and you can't hear what she says but it doesn't matter to either of you because the ride starts and then you're both rushing around and around through the wind and music and screams and time stops. A perfect snapshot. Remember that? Man if it wasn't for those girls I never would have made it out of my teens. 8:59, kissing under the midway. 'I got to go'. 'Me to'. And another kiss. She says, 'I'll call you'. 'OK'. She won't call. She'll lose your number on the way back to the hotel. You won't care. Because the kiss was enough anyway. You've got the elixir, you can make it to the next amusement park lol. Anyway that was a long winded attempt to explain what is really unexplainable. Maybe y'all know what I'm getting at.

Musically, I wanted this to be the cars and duran duran and amusement parks and tempie. So there's all of that in there. The sax is bowie, from the let's dance days. i stole a bunch of other stuff to.

So, getting tired of me yet? Ha. This is song 3 in the 6 song cycle about growing up. It follows Apocalypse, Now! So we're moving from 10-12 to the early teen years...it's like an after school special. Will i get to kiss Valerie Bertinelli? God I hope so...

Lyrics
up on the sky ride
checking out the girls down waiting in line
looking for a wendy
or a lisa
wanting to put her hand in mind
spent the last three hours
in the back of my aunt lynn's AMC
i wanna get lost
in some cherry lip gloss
midway lights and tight blue jeans

we don't have much time
running to the himalaya ride
chase you through the crowd
to the lights and the rock and roll sound

up on the sky ride
checking out the girls
down waiting in line
looking for a becky
or a donna
pretty and bored in the carousel lights
me and my cousins
sharing a room at the budget motel
i wanna be somebody
next to somebody
i want a story to kiss and tell
or a

The 'verbed vox are just spot on here. That little palm muted rhythm with the the funk electro bass is very cool leading into that Cardinal sins-esque solo. The drums are really well placed ni the mix and I love the laid back feel of the whole thing. There's a maturity to how you tel lthe story that's indicative of an artist comfortable in his skin but not resting on his laurels. You always up your game this time of year. Those outro vox are so 80's it hurts! Top tune man.

Yes!
Soon as I read "to some amusement park in some neighboring state" I felt like it was going to be the background to a kissing under the midway memory. Perfect articulation bro,,like I said I think u should write a book that would go along with this set of songs. You're like the Sufjan Stevens of childhood memories.

Love these lyrics.
"looking for a becky or a donna
pretty and bored in the carousel light"

You really capture the tumult and the exilhiration of the midway.

Writing, vocs, performance, mix all working for me. Another winning slice of life from you.

Cars
It's funny. I was listening to "Shake it Up" this morning and it made me think of the guitar in "My Best Friend's Girl". That's clickity-clackity that was more percussion than guitar. Such a big, understated part of those tracks. And you do it so well here.

There's so much delicious ear candy happening. Then that synth bubbles up to the top and puts this mofo in the deep freeze. Everything up to that point is dope. Like Bob Barker's showing me a very cool prize package with hiking boots, a new backpack, a tent and a brand-new 1988 Suzuki Samurai to get you there! The audience loses their shit. The dude is freaking out like only a Price is Right contestant can. Yeah. That's how I feel when that synth drops.

Too much good stuff in this track for me to point out. The snare work, vox. And Tempie storytelling. And you pulled the stops out on that song description. Keep them out for all other tunes. This was a damn holiday. Downloaded to filth!

Shake it Up
Man I love the Cars. Every sound in a Cars tune is so distinct. And of course I was ripping off that rhythm guitar. Man I really appreciate the close listen. I spend a lot of time on each song trying to get it right (meaning trying to get it to the point where i can listen to it without cringing) and it's a cool payoff for people to pay such close attention to the choices made.

wendy & lisa
Yet another Tempie expedition to the throbbing core of the mind lying beneath the newspaper and bubble wrap of adult experience.
I can smell the popcorn & cotton candy, and see the horrific tattooed carnies as I listen. Of course getting to go on a ride beside a pretty girl was the most (only) important thing!

anyway, really like the layers of guitars (very cool guitar solo) and synths, background vox are very nice esp. at the end. the music and the subject matter seem to meld together perfectly.
Look forward to the rest of the song cycle!

the throbbing core
man, nothing better than bubble wrap. whenever something arrives packed in bubble wrap I jump around on it like a 5 year old. that's good stuff. glad you like the solo. everyone thinks my solos these days are like those snakes that pop out of a fried onions can but i'm just so bored by the generic 'solo' that everyone has heard a billion times. seems to me that an electric guitar is electric in order to be more fun.

are joy and angst ever far apart when you're 14? i used to think angst WAS joy, bumming around my room listening to joy division and mourning the state of the world/my soul/love life. how cool was that? that was cool, man. that was the coolest anyone will ever be. listening to joy division and moping about my mortgage rate is just not the same lol.

I enjoy the descriptions as much as the song, Craig. I'm impressed you can remember your early teens with such clarity, and insight. I have trouble remembering what I did last week. Another polished, radio ready song. Long may you cycle. Regards, Peter.

Nothin' like those tight blue jeans and midway lights when we're awash in a sea of hormones. Dude in the pic will be moving his hands up in a few seconds. Well crafted song evokes America in the 80's. I can hear the Cars influence.

This is excellent, pop-ee ... quirky ... the vocals are great. I hear the Cars, Duran, Bowie ... we are all influenced by something ... all music has pieces of the past ... crazy guitar bit ... musically well done and well mixed. Your lyrics are nostalgic ... AMC? ha, I remember driving one of those. And I knew a Donna and a Wendy. Great tune and the picture is perfect!
