Description
As some members here know, I got into college a few months back to study music. The recession then killed my course, as it was a local authority funded course and in the budget cuts the music course was one of the things they cut. So I contacted the man who was head tutor and was given a reading list for a teach-yourself-at-home music theory course he devised a while back. It's just a list of books, but he also gave me his phone number in case I get stuck, which is generous. This piece was written as one of the exercises I needed to do while working my way through the first book. As is usually the case with beginners theory material it starts with C Major, which is why this is in that key. The point of it was to match a chord sequence to a melody, I think that bit works ;-)

Rose is a friend who needs a little peace and positivity at the moment, so this is dedicated to her.

Apologies if you got the last version, I accidentally uploaded the wrong file; this one has much more expression in it, so please download again.

Beautiful !
Self-study requires a lot of discipline and determination I think, because there is no one there to control and actually you do what ever you want (including not doing anything at all).

But please do continue no matter what happens. It's worth it. I love the way you played and also the composition itself. Way to go.

Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the encouragement. No, there will be no stopping me now I've started. As for the "playing" it's all midi notes entered using the mouse in piano-roll mode, with the expression achieved by editing each note's velocity individually. I used the Orchestra Steinway Piano from Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra, and switched off GarageBand's reverb & echo, then used a matrix reverb plug-in to provide the acoustics.

It's a lot of trouble to edit every single note's velocity individually, but the results are so much better than the mechanical midi sound that it really is worth it if you can't play the instrument you're composing for.

My comment...
That was my comment.
Don't worry about...
I wanted to comment, that I really like your work, and that beside my respect for your discipline, it is a really good and friendly thing to send a musical message, let's say a "YOU ARE NOT ALONE" to someone who needs and deserves this.
Thank a lot for sharing!
Take care,
Bernd

Thanks.
I love the mellow sound of this particular instrument in the lower registers and the way it slowly goes crystalline as you go further up the keyboard. One day I'll learn to play it instead of having to use the piano-roll editor all the time...

If you can play the
piano roll/mouse combination this well, you should be encouraged and secure about your musical talent. Playing an actual keyboard where you have immediate feedback to your strokes must be infinitely more natural and easier to master. For a young person, you have focus and dedication lacking in most. You are teaching yourself with the help of a book and that is laudable. I have always been able to teach myself most things. Music has escaped me. You have my admiration. The reverie is warm and evocative. Bravo. Thank you.

Young I'm not!
I'm fifty two years old, not ancient but not a young person either. However I don't have an old or even middle-aged outlook on life. Like you, I've been able to teach myself a lot through books, in fact I've taught myself three professions entirely from reading and experimenting with computers. I did computer tech support in the early 1980s, programming in the late 1980s and I now create 3D computer graphics models for animators to use.

Music is complicated; much of it is art, much of it is a science with a lot of hidden maths in it. It's hard to write a book that conveys all that clearly, so I guess I've been lucky to have a reading list assembled for me by an expert; one or two books per term, four terms a year for four years. I may not work through it in the time the tutor intended when he put the list together, but be assured I will get through the list.

Thanks for your generous comments, this is the kind of thing that helps me to keep going.

Uncluttered, effective piece that uses the major key to good advantage. It creates a positive, affirming atmosphere. I hope Rose takes heart from it. Regards, Peter.

Simplicity is helpful at the moment.
Keeping it simple helps me focus on whatever my objectives are when composing a pice, so it's intentional. I will certainly be writing more complicated pieces too, but not just yet. Thanks for your comment.

This flows very well. A great start to composing and very well thought out. Chord progressions and melody works all the way through.

drawn to your moniker, then...
felt through your music an empathy for Rose. Don't give up! Either one of you. Never, Never give up on your real and true dreams. Nice Piano playin'..... : ) ~ Give Smokey VW a listen ~ he is WAY COOL, and a Whiz with computers, garageband, Logic Pro (what have you) He's a very wonderful and nice man to ask questions of whether it be music theory or computer program "stuff". Stuff ~ LOL ~ you can tell I'm just a muse/groupie, cantcha. ;~ P

Yeah my online name was originally a nickname given to me by a girlfriend; I've been given some I didn't like when at school, but that one I liked. Thanks for listening, I already got the idea that Smokey knows a lot, so I may take your advice and pester him if I get stuck; I'll be sure to mention that it was your idea LOL.

Pensive Piece
Not a thorn to be found in this little tune. It evokes an image of a gentle, nurturing rain falling on a modest garden... the quiet nurture of Nature. ;)

Gentle and expressive - a delightful piece of music.
Fire_Angel said 1624 days ago (November 14th, 2012)
Thanks.
One of the most successful of my uploads here, so I guess the study is going well. Funny I left till the age of 51 to start learning to write music, even though I always wanted to and somehow always thought I'd end up being good at it. I do sometimes wish I'd started as a kid though I am not wasting too much energy on wishes; I have to start my journey from where I am.

Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

For Rose
The arts are always the first thing to cut ... can you imagine a world with out art?
This is quite beautiful in it's simplicity. I enjoyed the low chords against the higher melody notes ... feel a sense of melancholy yet with touch of hope...
Enjoyed!

Arts courses are always cut first.
Actually I understand where the local authorities are going; they can't cut social services or some other things they are legally obliged to provide, and music courses don't often lead to paid work, so...

Anyway, thanks for the listen; it seems that keeping it simple works as well as ever.

Key of C...
Worked well for Mozart...and it works well for you, too. Oddly, the way you have constructed this little prelude reminds me of some of Shostokovich's piano works. This is really quite lovely and most intriguing throughout it 3 minute journey. You don't get bogged down by superfluous augmentation or experimental harmonies: you just write a piece that is clearly stated and that does not pretend to be anything that it is not. In short, a very satisfying miniature that is, frankly, so much more than just a writing exercise. Have you written this down? I would like to see it if you possibly have a score. Very nice, indeed.

It's in a GarageBand file.
I can easily output it by printing the score from GarageBand and then selecting the Mac's print to PDF option. Thanks for your comments, I will email you the PDF sheet music and look forward to hearing it played if you decide to do that.

Match
Did you write both melody and chords? The melody is somewhat non-traditional for a harmonization exercise. It actually reminds of Satie in how static it is. That makes it very peaceful, so in writing something for your friend you accomplished your mission.

If you're looking for interesting hamornization exercises, then this melody may not be the best one.

I wrote it all.
My aims with this were these: 1. To demonstrate to myself that I had understood what I read in my theory book. 2. To conjure and maintain the particular mood that I felt from the first few chords when I started sketching the piece on my keyboard. 3. To write the best piece of music I could while fitting the requirements of the exercise. 4. To produce something that Rose would love and that might lift her a little.

I hit all four targets this time, so I'll try to keep that up.

So your 52?
Well I'm 51 and this really struck a chord if you will excuse the pun. When my wife and I split up a couple of years ago one of the few material things I missed most from the old family home was her grandmothers old upright piano. I am no piano player but I so enjoyed just tinkering away on it and coming up with simple melodies. I think this is just the sort of thing I would have played. Your on the same song sheet!! Very nice!
Awesome classical sounding piece!

I enjoyed this a lot. I tend to start at C Major a lot myself, but as of late I have been forcing myself to go new directions. Don't be afraid to experiment. That's what music is all about.

Keep it up!

I love it.

Very nice piece.
The fact that it is dedicated to your friend Rose, I think comes out here. Its an emotional piece with positivity in it.
Who cares if you used piano roll midi! I did something similar, an instumental called 'Watching the Storm' (which is on macjams) and I'm very proud of it, even though I couldn't play it for real.
Sorry about the self plug there!

I am proud of this piece, make no mistake :)
My music is a series of attempts to entertain and communicate some emotion. If I do that, I'm happy, whether it's played on my keyboard (maybe I'll be able to do that one day) or entered into the piano roll editor using the mouse. I was only pointing it out to avoid misleading people; my pedantic and precise personal version of integrity I guess. Thanks for the encouraging comment.
