Description
I wrote this after reading the introduction to Stan Gadziola's (Gadzooks) latest song (http://www.macjams.com/song/75195) where he talked about what happened when his firm was taken over.

I happened to have a friend's (Greg Wilson) 12 string so used that for the song - finger-style on the left, a pick on the right. I added a little electric guitar, bass, some synth and a one-take vocal. Not all that polished, but I hope it sounds OK...

Lyrics
The Cost

There are accountants in the building
They’re looking at the books
They never smile they never laugh
They seem a bunch of crooks

They draw the line right down the page
And start to make a list
What’s in the red, what’s in the black
Is there something someone’s missed?

Chorus
And it’s clear there is a cost
And it’s clear what we have lost
Will they ever see what they have done?

And after they have done their work
They tell the man in charge
Get rid of all the people here
And your profits will be large

Send the work to somewhere else
To get it on the cheap
The less you pay for what you sell
The more you get to keep

Chorus

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon
And I saw a mighty gulf
But it’s not as wide as the one there is
Between poverty and wealth

While one man gets to smile at night
Because of what he’s made
Another family’s in despair
At the price that they have paid

Bridge
When you’re staring at the needle
That the camel’s passing through
And you see what’s on the other side
But you don’t know what to do

Chorus x 2
It’s clear there is a cost
It’s clear what you have lost
Will you ever see what you have done?

You hit right on the nail with these lyrics. Greed and ego will destroy this world ... it's all about profit. I believe things happen for a reason and something better comes from it...
This makes me want to find a 12 string. It's refreshing to hear that sound.
I think the recording is polished enough ... the instruments are well played and your vocals sound real good. Well done Philip.
Cheers

Hi Stan
Thanks for the comments on the song, Stan - good to hear from you. That 12 string sure is a distinctive sound. Greg and I bought our Matons at the same - he the 12 string, me a 6 string. They are only improving with age! I hope all is well with you. Cheers. Philip

Right on bro!
Too many greedy ashpoles in the world and when the world ends (on Dec. 21) they can try to bribe St. Peter with all their no-longer-useful cash.
Good work as usual Philip, musically and lyrically. Sounds OK to me ;-)

Amen to that Philip. Hit it on the head indeed. And a one take vocal - very professional of you!

Well sung, played and mixed my friend. And thanks, as ever, for the download.

Thanks for the comment, Andrew - much appreciated, as always. Yes, there's something about a 12 string. I like them strummed, too, and maybe should have done this song that way. I might do another version :-)

Timely, pertinent lyrics and a fine vehicle for their telling, Philip. The 12-string sounds good. I used to have one a long time ago but the neck bowed and I sold it. Pity, really. The one take vocal adds a sense of immediacy to the song. Quality post. See you tomorrow. Regards, Peter.

12 strings
Pity about your old 12 string - Jim Cargill probably could have sorted that out for you! Re the one take, I think it does sort of sound live, but that's in part because it jumps at a few of the words. Ah, well. Yep, see you tomorrow.

Oh boy ...
do not get me started about accountants...they are a bunch of backstabbingdoubledyedbedwett.......did I say do NOT get me started....hah! Short but pithy ditty and I can so relate to it...there was a small item on the radio yesterday from a presenter who was banging on about the need to keep warm this winter and how people were having to decide between heating and eating and the fact that 30,000 people a year in UK die due to not keeping warm....she then went casually on with the "Children In Need" appeal so what she had previously said did not obviously outrage her as it did me !! Power companies making vast and unforgivable profits while bodybags mount up in the morgues......sorry.....your song was brilliant by the way lest we forget why I started this...

12-string sounds great. Lyric is right on. Too often big corps are sacrificing quality and service for what seems to be a low cost. I hope we all don't end up singing songs to each other for nothing while eating dog food.

Folk song....
There's that folksong business again.
This is really a wonderful song, Philip. You deliver the narrative with clarity (in your voice) and a lilting style that somehow has a distinctive folksong quality to it. This comes through beautifully in your vocal rendering as well as the unencumbered guitar work and general arrangement. I particularly like the fact (which I've mentioned in earlier works you've posted) that the lyrics you sing are always easy to understand on their own without need of the text as a prompt. Excellent work and much enjoyed.

Thanks for that detailed comment, Paul. I'm pleased you like the vocal - and can understand the words. I do try to have the vocal prominent in the mix (even if I sometimes get carried away and have too many guitars). Your support is much appreciated.

I think I'd need more time with the 12 string to get really comfortable with it - making sure you hit the two strings cleanly when playing fingerstyle is a bit of a challenge. The action on the Maton is good, so fretting the strings isn't too bad. I do like its distinctive sound, though. Thanks for listening and for leaving a comment - much appreciated!

Ah the cost
Twelve years working hard for a big charity, ( yeh thats a CHARITY!).beating targets, building up networks, building up relationships. building up trust and experience. Yes our pay did increase but only steadily and hell we earned it. But then 2011 the accountants came in. 35 out of 40 of us went in 4 months. All that experience lost. Then 4 months later they re advertise a job that's 90% our old job on £15k a year less and they get some inexperienced 20 somethings to fill the posts. Meanwhile the 50 somethings find them selves on the scrap heap......kind of relate to your song Phil as you might have noticed!!! very much enjoyed. Cheers Mark

They see it.....
But they don't care, cause their bellies are full.....
Now they have the people trained to keep their mouth shut and their
eyes closed, but keep their butt holes oiled up, so they can stick it
deeper.....They've got people thinking that wrong is right and the people won't even put up a fight....Damn shame....

But you sure nailed this one...My Man.....Well done.....

Glad you liked the song! Re the vocal, I use a Blue Yeti mike into Garageband, using GB's "Live Performance" setting. I have a piece of software called "Nectar" from Izotope, and use the Jazz Warmth vocal preset, but I'm not sure that it makes a huge difference - I probably need to play with it a lot more. The main lift comes, I think, from using Ozone 5 and the "CD Master" setting, which gives the whole track presence. It's not cheap, but it lifts tracks in ways that I can't get by fiddling within Garageband. Thanks for listening and for the supportive comment - much appreciated!
