Description
Another Alaska/Canada trip song - No. 5.

One of the things that we found intriguing in Alaska was how quite a few of the accommodation centres would completely close down for the winter. Away from major towns, the "tourist" season seemed to run from May through September and even very large hotels, with 100's of rooms, just close up shop for up to 7 months of the year.

We stayed at a town near Denali National Park in some cabins that were best described as "rustic" (their web page photos were obviously from a different epoch) and had an interesting conversation with the mid-20s guy who came around to fix the plethora of things that were not working. When we asked him what he was going to do for the winter, he said he would probably just hibernate in his cabin and drink beer in his underwear... He did mention that female company would be a bonus but that he did have a great dog that kept him company.

We did actually see his dog do some pretty neat tricks in the local nearby bar that evening...

Anyway, this tongue-in-cheek song resulted.

Disclaimer: No animals were hurt in the recording of this song.

Just a bit of fun, really.

Regards,

Peter :-)

Lyrics
Cabin Fever CAPO 2 Peter Bowen (November 2012)

[Am] [C/G] [D/F#] [F], [F7] [E7] [Am] [E7]

[Am] Way up here, when it's [C/G] 40 below
It’s a [D/F#] three dog night and there's [F] too much snow
I [Am] hunker right down and [C/G] grab me another cold [E(7)] beer (rundown riff)

At least the [Am] heating is fine in this [C/G] run down chateau
Perhaps I [D/F#] should've gone down to [F] Mexico
Instead I'm [F7] sitting here drinking, [E7] wearing my under[Am]wear [E7]

The road is closed, my truck’s snowed in
I can't go outside but the bears can’t get in
Wolves are a'prowling around and howling for prey

But I got me a gun and a big ol’ dog
Months of good grub and a storeroom of grog
I can [F7] strum this here old gui[E7]tar till the thaw comes in [Am] May [E7]

There's [G] just one or two little [F7] things that I over[Am] looked
[G] Some spare guitar strings and a [G#7] lady to cuddle and [E7] cook...

Lead over two verses

There's [G] just one or two little [F7] things that I over[Am] looked
[G] Some spare guitar strings and a [G#7] lady to cuddle and [E7] cook...

So I spend my time teaching tricks to the dog
When the fire runs low he can put on a log
Soon he'll be able to fetch and pour me a beer (rundown riff)

Well, he's man’s best friend and a hell of a bro’
But the cabin fever must be starting to show
Now he’s [F7] sitting there drinking, [E7] wearing my under[Am]wear [E7]
Yes, he’s [F7] sitting there drinking, [E7] wearing my under[Am]wear [E7]
And I’m [F7] sitting here thinking, [E7] what in the world happened [Am] here?

There's a song in every human interaction. We just need to have our eyes open. And it sure helps when a gifted songwriter such as yourself is delivering the goods! Great work Peter!

I just knew...
Thanks, Andrew. I just knew that there was a song in it when this guy talked about sitting out winter drinking beer in his underpants. What goes on in the north, stays in the north... I appreciate your comments. Take care, Peter.

Your selfmade acoustic sounds great, do you use a pick up for the recording or microfones? Oh sorry, I should better say something about your work... :) It was a pleasure to listen to this bluesy acoustic tune, it sounds brilliant! I don't miss a bigger arrangement and that speaks for the song and how you arranged it. Oh and thanks for the story behind the song.

My 000 :-)
Hi Diego. Glad you liked the song. It does have a blues base for sure. I made my 000 using some wonderful Australian tone woods (solid Tasmanian blackwood back and sides, Queensland maple neck, Bunya pine soundboard and Gidgee fingerboard) at a local luthier school in Melbourne. It is a wonderful guitar. I used an AKG Perception 170 small diaphragm condenser microphone to record it. Thanks for dropping by. Take care, Peter.

Huge smile!
Peter, you are a damned fine singer/songwriter/guitarist. I thought you were before, but this confirms it, in spades, for me. Oh yeah, you obviously have a terrific sense of humour too (do you use the extra "u" in Oz?)

Here's a thought:
You seem to be getting some great tunes out of your holiday adventure. If you write a couple more you could cut a CD and write off all your vacation expenses as research/inspiration (quite legitimately, I think).

Whatever, another excellent post. Cheers.

One for you, nineteen for me...
Glad the song brought a smile to your face, Richard. No extra "u" down here in Victoria, but up in north Queensland and over in NZ...

Thanks for the CD idea. Not sure the tax man might be all that sympathetic. I have actually put out a CD for family and friends over the last few years and this year will be no different. Take care, Peter.

Solid Peter
...I swear guys like you, it's a crime we get music of this caliber free of charge, but I hope you get the satisfaction of knowing you have a VERY appreciative audience Peter. What I liked about this song is your deft handling of adding emphasis to the lyrics with the melody itself; this is a perfect marriage of word and song and that's a beautiful thing. Boy, I felt so sorry for this guy in the song!! You captured dispair so vividly. Always, your musical talents as musician, vocalist and producer shine here. High Marks to you Peter--I just wish you would put up something that sucks up so I wouldn't gush so much!!!

You seem so inspired Peter ... another fab song ... you need to make a cd.
Great story and you know that sitting and drinking in your underwear is a favourite north american pastime ... it is here in Canada!
Superb guitar tones which I say every time now ... and it's expected from you now Peter, and the organ is just the right amount like a spice to add flavour. Good vocals and harmonies. Another great song!

One more, perhaps...
Thanks, Stan. I reckon I might have one more Canada/Alaska "trip" song in me. Luckily we are off to London and Paris after Christmas for a month, so I might have some stories to relate from the other side of the globe. Glad you liked this fun little number. Sitting in your underwear drinking beer, eh. I wonder how that little cultural treasure started :-) Take care, Peter.

Guitar....!!!
Your guitar work on this one is really stellar, Peter, always just a pleasant sound bed that accompanies your clearly-presented vocal...You harmonize very well with yourself, too, keeping the second voice just enough "back" so that it doesn't obscure the tune. Your acoustic solo around 2:00 provides a beautiful instrumental bridge, too, just what's needed at that moment in your song. You possess a very natural understanding of what needs to be where in the structure of your pieces, this one being no exception. (I still think you could nudge the strings up. They are almost inaudible.)
Wonderful song.

Thanks, Paul
Hi Paul. Thanks again for your kind words. I'm glad that the song hung together well. I really just wanted the organ to float in the background provide a sense of depth whilst the lead break occurred. It seems to achieve that aim through my speakers and headphones but, as always, I appreciate your observations. Take care, Peter.

I feel like your voice is getting stronger with your recovery (I am jealous!). This is well written, both musically and lyrically! I have to say I have seen marked improvement in general in this mix. Not that others were not great, but I am hearing no nits on this one Pete. Am I perceiving increased strength? Especially vocally! Just very confident. Strong harmonies! Love it man!

In 1979
I almost took a alaskan bush pilot job. The owner offered me $50k a year, a cabin, a jeep, and offered to provide all the beer I could drink. I almost took the job but didn't. A buddy of mine did take the job and sent me a picture that made me cold just looking at it.

He said there were some gorgeous women where he was living but you couldn't tell for all the bundles of fur and jackets. You had to get to know them pretty well then you might figure out they looked like a model under all that.

He said the flying was hard, everything froze, during the winter that is just about what you do. Burn a fire 24/7 and sit by it in your underwear. At least until the next flight was called.

'I got the ice crystals in the bottom of my beer' blues. Overlooked the spare guitar strings? If so, then not much else. This is really a treat to hear Peter - a great song, well sung, but the clarity and mix is brilliant.

It's starting to get cold here but thankfully it doesn't get to -40 very often. We have some of your country mates coming to stay with us for the holidays. I hope they don't get too shocked coming from summer in oz to the Great White North.

Thanks for the dload Peter.
